Chapter 2 - THE EMPTY COFFINS

The air in the narrow corridor grew so heavy Isabella felt as though she were drowning.

The voice that echoed from the elevator didn't belong to a rival boss or a hired hitman. It belonged to the man whose closed-casket funeral had paralyzed the entire East Coast underworld twelve years ago.

Anthony Moretti stepped out of the shadows.

He looked older, the gray hair at his temples now completely silver, but the ruthless elegance that had made him the most feared man in New York remained untouched. He wore a perfectly tailored charcoal suit, and in his right hand, he held a heavy silver walking cane.

Isabella didn't lower her gun. Her hands, usually steady as stone, trembled violently.

"Anthony?" she whispered, the name tearing at a wound she had spent a decade trying to close.

"You look well, Isabella," Anthony said, his voice entirely devoid of the warmth they had once shared. He stopped a few feet away, glancing at Frank, then finally letting his eyes settle on Michael.

"You've grown, Son," Anthony added, leaning slightly on his cane.

Michael didn't move. He stood protectively in front of Noah, his jaw locked, staring at his father with a hatred so pure it sent a chill down Isabella's spine.

"You don't get to call me that," Michael said, his voice dangerously low. "Not after what you did."

Isabella looked frantically between the two men. "What is he talking about, Anthony? I buried you! I kissed your forehead before they closed the casket. The doctors said the stroke—"

"The doctors were very well paid," Anthony interrupted smoothly. "Just as the police were well paid when they found Michael's burning car five years earlier."

Isabella felt the floor tilt beneath her feet. "You knew? You knew Michael was alive this whole time?"

"Knew?" Frank Delaney chuckled from the doorway. "Madam, Anthony didn't just know. He ordered the kidnapping."

The words struck Isabella like physical blows. She stumbled backward, bumping against the doorframe of Room 17. The man she had loved, the father of her children, had orchestrated the abduction of their only son.

"Why?" Isabella gasped, pointing the gun directly at her husband's chest. "Why would you take my son from me?"

Anthony sighed, adjusting his grip on the silver cane. "Because you were ruining him, Isabella. You wanted him to be a businessman. You wanted him out of the syndicate. You were filling his head with fantasies of a legitimate life."

"I wanted him to live!" Isabella screamed, the polished mafia queen finally breaking. "I wanted him to survive!"

"And he did survive," Anthony replied coldly. "Because I had Frank pull him out of that hospital after the car crash. I hid him away where you couldn't soften him. I was going to forge him into a true Moretti, to take over the family when I was ready to step down."

Isabella’s mind raced. "But... you died. Twelve years ago. If you were going to hand the family to him, why did you fake your own death?"

Anthony's expression hardened. He looked past Isabella, straight at Michael.

"Ask him," Anthony said.

Isabella turned to her son.

Michael swallowed hard. He looked at Isabella, his eyes filled with a terrifying sorrow.

"Because twelve years ago, when he came to the compound where Frank was keeping me," Michael whispered, "I found out he wasn't just grooming me to take over the family. He was grooming me to kill you, Mother."

The silence in the hallway was absolute. Even the distant gunfire downstairs seemed to pause.

"He told me you had ordered the hit on my car," Michael continued, his voice trembling with anger. "He told me you wanted Elena to inherit the family because she was ruthless. He spent five years trying to convince me to put a bullet in your head."

Isabella looked at Anthony. The man she had spent her life mourning had planned her assassination.

"When I refused," Michael said, stepping closer to Isabella, "when I told him I would rather die than hurt you... he realized I couldn't be controlled. So, he faked his death to disappear, leaving Frank to manage the family from the shadows while they figured out what to do with me."

"And what changed tonight?" Isabella demanded, aiming the gun at Frank. "Why bring the boy here? Why now?"

Frank smiled, gesturing to the envelope he had left on the table.

"Because of the boy, Madam," Frank said. "Noah's mother, Maria, was Michael's nurse. She didn't just find out Michael was alive. She found out where we were keeping him. And she stole something from Anthony before Elena had her killed."

Isabella looked down at thirteen-year-old Noah. The boy was trembling, clutching the silver serving tray against his chest like a shield.

"Noah," Isabella said softly, keeping her eyes on Frank. "What did your mother steal?"

Noah reached into his pocket. He pulled out a small, heavy gold pocket watch. It was engraved with the Moretti family crest.

Anthony's calm facade finally broke. His eyes widened, and he took a sudden step forward, raising his cane. "Give that to me, boy."

"No!" Michael roared, stepping between Anthony and Noah.

"That watch," Noah stammered, holding it out to Isabella, "my mother said it doesn't tell time. It's a key."

Isabella took the heavy gold watch. She pressed the top button. The face popped open, revealing not a clock, but a specialized digital thumb drive, the kind used for accessing secure offshore banking networks.

"It's the family's master ledger," Anthony growled, his voice losing all its elegance. "Every account, every bribe, every politician in my pocket. Maria stole it from my safe. Without it, I am locked out of my own fortune. That's why Elena is helping me. That's why we had to clear the restaurant tonight."

Isabella stared at the drive. Her husband and her daughter had orchestrated a massacre just to get their money back.

Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the stairs behind Frank.

"Frank!" Richard's voice yelled from the darkness. "The police have breached the front doors! We have to move!"

Frank drew his weapon, aiming it directly at Isabella. "The watch, Isabella. Now."

Before Isabella could react, Michael lunged. He didn't go for Frank. He tackled his father, driving Anthony into the wall. The silver cane clattered to the floor.

"Run, Mother!" Michael yelled, wrestling Anthony to the ground.

Frank aimed his gun at Michael's back, but Isabella fired first. Her bullet struck Frank in the shoulder, spinning the security chief around. He returned fire blindly, the bullet shattering the wooden frame of Room 17.

Isabella grabbed Noah by the collar. "The service elevator! Go!"

As they ran down the corridor, Isabella looked back. Michael had his hands locked around Anthony's throat, but Richard was emerging from the stairwell, raising his pistol toward her son.

Isabella fired two shots, forcing Richard back into the stairwell, but the magazine clicked empty. She was out of bullets.

"Michael!" she screamed.

Michael looked at her, then at the heavy steel fire door separating the corridor from the elevator bay.

He didn't run toward her. He ran toward the heavy door, slamming it shut and throwing the deadbolt, locking himself in the corridor with his father, Richard, and Frank.

"Michael, open this door!" Isabella screamed, pounding on the steel.

Through the small reinforced glass window, Michael looked at her. Blood was running down the side of his face from where Anthony had struck him.

"Take the boy and go, Mother," Michael said, his voice muffled through the heavy glass. "Protect the ledger. Don't let them take the family."

"I am not leaving you!" she sobbed, hitting the glass.

But Michael stepped back into the shadows of the corridor as Richard and Frank advanced on him.

The private service elevator dinged open behind Isabella.

Noah grabbed her hand, tears streaming down his face. "Mrs. Moretti, we have to go! They're coming up the stairs!"

Isabella looked at her son one last time, her heart tearing open. She allowed Noah to pull her into the elevator. As the doors closed, she looked down at the gold pocket watch in her hand.

Anthony had faked his death to steal her son. Now, she held the key to his entire empire.

The elevator descended rapidly. Isabella wiped the tears from her face, her sorrow instantly hardening into absolute, terrifying rage.

She wasn't just a mourning mother anymore. She was the head of the Moretti family.

And as the elevator doors opened into the flooded, chaotic underground parking garage, Isabella saw Elena standing by a black SUV, holding a suppressed pistol, waiting for her.

"Hello, Mother," Elena said coldly.

Isabella didn't flinch. She stepped out of the elevator, hiding Noah behind her.

"You betrayed your brother," Isabella said, her voice echoing off the concrete walls. "You betrayed me."

Elena smiled, raising the gun. "It's nothing personal, Mother. It's just business."

But before Elena could pull the trigger, the dark tinted window of the SUV rolled down, and a man inside aimed a shotgun directly at Elena's head.

"Drop the gun, Elena," the man said.

May you like

Isabella froze. The man in the SUV wasn't one of her guards.

It was a man wearing the rival Romano family crest on his jacket.
