Chapter 8 - THE JUDGE AND THE HEIR

The safehouse descended into absolute, organized chaos.

Matteo didn't shoot Vincenzo. He kicked the traitor brutally in the face, knocking him unconscious, then tossed the pistol aside. He scooped Abigail into his arms, carrying her out of the panic room as if she weighed nothing.

"Isabella! Call Dr. Rossi. Tell him to meet us at the private clinic immediately!" Matteo yelled over his shoulder, sprinting down the darkened hallway. "Have the men throw Vincenzo in the holding cell. Nobody kills him until I get back."

Abigail buried her face in Matteo’s neck, crying out as another vicious contraction ripped through her abdomen. "It's too early," she sobbed. "He's only seven months, Matteo. He's too small!"

"He is David's son," Matteo said fiercely, carrying her out into the freezing night air toward the armored Maybach. "He is a fighter. And you are the strongest woman I have ever met. He will survive."

They tore through the city streets at eighty miles an hour, ignoring red lights, escorted by two black SUVs filled with Matteo's most loyal men.

In the backseat, Abigail gripped Matteo's hand so tightly her fingernails dug into his skin. He didn't flinch. He just kept whispering to her, grounding her, promising her that everything would be alright.

They arrived at the Romano private medical clinic—a discreet, state-of-the-art facility entirely off the grid. Dr. Rossi and a team of neonatal specialists were already waiting at the emergency doors.

They rushed Abigail onto a gurney and wheeled her down the sterile white hallway. Matteo walked right beside her, refusing to let go of her hand until the nurses physically blocked him at the delivery room doors.

"I'm staying right here," Matteo promised her as the doors swung shut.

For two agonizing hours, Matteo paced the waiting room. Isabella sat on the couch, praying silently with a rosary wrapped around her fingers. The mafia boss, a man who controlled politicians and shipping empires, was utterly powerless, pacing like an expectant father.

Finally, the doors opened.

Dr. Rossi stepped out, pulling down his surgical mask. He looked exhausted, but he was smiling.

"She did brilliantly," Dr. Rossi said. "It's a boy. He's small, and he'll need to be in the NICU for a few weeks to develop his lungs, but he is breathing on his own. He's strong."

Matteo closed his eyes, a profound, shuddering sigh escaping his lips.

"Can I see her?" Matteo asked.

"She's resting, but yes. She's asking for you."

Matteo walked into the recovery room. Abigail was lying in the hospital bed, looking pale and completely drained, but her eyes were bright.

Matteo walked to her bedside and gently brushed a damp strand of hair from her forehead.

"You have a son," Matteo whispered, a rare, genuine smile breaking across his hardened face.

"David," Abigail whispered back, tears of joy sliding down her cheeks. "His name is David."

Before Matteo could reply, his phone vibrated in his pocket. It was his lead attorney.

Matteo stepped into the hallway to take the call. "Tell me you have Sinclair."

"We have a problem, Matteo," the lawyer said, his voice tense. "The FBI raided Sinclair's penthouse an hour ago based on the flash drive data we leaked."

"And?"

"He wasn't there. But they found something in his safe. Matteo... Sinclair had a judge sign a blind, emergency custody order three days ago. He officially petitioned the state to declare Abigail Foster an unfit mother due to financial destitution and alleged mental instability. He forged medical records."

Matteo’s blood ran cold. "What are you talking about?"

"Sinclair legally adopted Abigail's baby, Matteo. The judge signed off on it before the baby was even born. Sinclair knew the baby was David's. He was planning to take the child to ensure Abigail never testified against Vanessa for the hit-and-run."

"Where is Sinclair?" Matteo demanded, his voice dropping to a demonic whisper.

"He's at the hospital," the lawyer said frantically. "Not our clinic. The city hospital where Abigail was registered to deliver. He showed up with state child services and an armed security detail ten minutes ago. He thinks she's there. He's trying to take the child."

Matteo hung up the phone.

Sinclair hadn't just tried to murder Abigail. He had tried to legally steal her child to use as a hostage. He had weaponized the legal system against a poor waitress to protect his arrogant, drunken daughter.

Matteo walked back into the recovery room. He looked at Abigail, who was finally resting peacefully, completely unaware of the monster hunting her son.

Matteo leaned down and kissed Abigail softly on the forehead.

"I'll be right back," Matteo whispered.

He walked out of the clinic, his eyes burning with an unholy fire.

He didn't call the police. He didn't call his lawyers.

He called his tactical strike team.
