Chapter 2 - THE SILVER LOCKET

Isabella Romano did not walk. She practically collapsed into Abigail, wrapping her arms around the waitress’s shoulders, burying her face in the cheap polyester of the hotel uniform.

Abigail froze. Her hands, still trembling from the adrenaline of the slap, hovered awkwardly in the air.

"You stayed with me," Isabella sobbed, her voice carrying through the deadly silence of the ballroom. "It was so cold. I was so scared. You held my hand until the anesthesia took me."

Abigail looked over Isabella’s dark hair, straight into the terrifying, steel-gray eyes of Matteo Romano.

The billionaire mafia boss wasn't looking at the shattered crystal on the floor. He wasn't looking at the hundreds of wealthy guests staring in stunned disbelief. He was looking at Abigail with a fierce, unwavering protectiveness that made the air in her lungs catch.

"Get her off me!" Vanessa Sinclair finally screeched, breaking the spell. Her pale silver silk dress rustled as she took a furious step forward. "This is absurd. She's a clumsy, incompetent waitress who nearly ruined a ten-thousand-dollar gown! I want her fired. I want her arrested for negligence!"

Richard Sinclair, Vanessa’s father, finally moved. But he didn't move to comfort his daughter.

He grabbed Vanessa’s arm so hard she gasped.

"Shut your mouth, Vanessa," Richard hissed. His face had drained of all color. He looked like a man who had just realized he was standing on a landmine.

Matteo gently pulled his sister back, handing her a silk handkerchief. Then he stepped directly in front of Vanessa.

"The only person leaving this room in handcuffs is the one who just assaulted a pregnant woman," Matteo said. His voice was a low, vibrating rumble that didn't need volume to convey absolute violence. "If you ever raise your hand to her—or anyone else—again, I will dismantle your family's legacy piece by piece and sell the rubble for scrap."

Vanessa’s jaw dropped. She looked at her father for backup, but Richard was staring at Matteo with naked terror.

"Matteo, please," Richard choked out, raising his hands in surrender. "It was a misunderstanding. The girl—"

"Her name is Abigail," Matteo corrected, his voice slicing through the air like a razor.

Matteo turned his back on the Sinclairs, entirely dismissing their existence. He looked down at Abigail. He noticed the way she shifted her weight, favoring her swollen ankles. He saw the red handprint still burning across her cheek.

"Come with me," Matteo said softly. "You shouldn't be on your feet. My doctors will examine you and the baby."

It was an offer that promised safety, wealth, and absolute protection. Any woman in that ballroom would have taken his hand without hesitation.

But Abigail didn't take his hand.

Instead, she took a slow, deliberate step backward. Her hands wrapped protectively around her seven-month belly.

"No," Abigail whispered, her voice shaking but resolute.

Matteo frowned, genuine confusion crossing his sharp features. "You have nothing to fear from me, Abigail. You saved my sister's life. My family is indebted to you forever."

"I don't want your debt," Abigail said, her breathing growing shallow. "And I don't want your help. I just want to go home."

She turned to leave, but as she pivoted, the top button of her cheap uniform blouse snagged on the edge of her newly replaced nametag.

The fabric pulled open just enough to reveal the heavy silver chain resting against her collarbone.

Dangling from the chain was a thick, antique silver locket. It was deeply scratched, bearing the distinct, undeniable crest of a soaring falcon gripping a shattered sword.

Matteo’s entire body went rigid.

That crest didn't belong to a jewelry store. It was the private insignia of the Romano syndicate’s inner circle.

And Matteo knew exactly who that specific locket belonged to. It had belonged to his chief financial officer, who had vanished without a trace seven months ago.

"Where did you get that?" Matteo demanded, his voice dropping to a dangerous, interrogating whisper.

May you like

Abigail clutched the locket defensively against her chest, her eyes wide with sudden panic.

"My fiancé gave it to me," she choked out, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "Right before your family killed him."
