Chapter 8 - The Lakeside Safe and the Final Offer

Frank stood amidst the shattered safety glass, the tire iron hanging loosely in his right hand. His expensive wool coat was speckled with glass dust. He looked past me, past Daniel, and locked eyes on the leather briefcase sitting open on a dining table, right next to Sarah’s glowing laptop.

Then he saw Monica.

For a fraction of a second, the mask of the sophisticated, put-upon husband slipped, revealing the cornered, desperate animal underneath. But Frank had spent a lifetime manipulating reality, and he immediately tried to spin a new web.

"Monica, darling, get away from them," Frank said, his voice dripping with forced concern as he took a step forward. "Anne has completely lost her mind. She and Daniel stole my briefcase and broke into the building. I had to smash the glass to rescue you."

Monica didn't move. She just stared at him, her eyes flicking from his face to the tire iron in his hand.

"Rescue me?" Monica asked, her voice trembling but gaining strength. "Like you rescued me by sending me to deposit Anne's forged check this afternoon?"

Frank froze.

"I know about Costa Rica, Frank," Monica said, stepping out from behind the table. "I know about the shell companies, and I know you set me up to take the fall for defrauding your own son."

Frank’s eyes darted to the laptop, seeing the decrypted files open on the screen. The color drained from his face. The tire iron clattered to the hardwood floor.

"Robert," Frank snapped, turning to his brother. "Robert, grab that laptop. If you let me walk out of here with it, I’ll transfer fifty thousand into your account tonight. I swear to God."

Robert crossed his arms, looking at his brother with pure disgust. "You don't have fifty thousand left, Frank. You wired it all offshore. And even if you did, I wouldn't take a dime from a man who steals his wife's family heirlooms."

Frank turned to Daniel, his posture shifting from arrogant command to pathetic bargaining.

"Danny, listen to me," Frank pleaded, holding his hands out. "I can fix this. I’ll sign the building over to you right now. Free and clear. You can keep the restaurant. I’ll even leave your mother the house. Just let me take the USB drive and walk away. We can handle this like a family."

"You lost the right to use that word when you served my mother divorce papers between the bread basket and the flowers," Daniel said, stepping in front of me, his jaw set. "You didn't build this family. You just fed off it."

"Give me the drive, Anne," Frank demanded, finally turning to me, his voice dropping to a vicious sneer. "If you turn that over to the police, the feds will seize everything. The house, the restaurant, the accounts. You’ll be left with nothing. Let me walk, and I’ll leave you financially secure."

I looked at the man I had loved, the man I had nursed through illnesses and supported through job losses. I felt no anger anymore. Only a profound, liberating emptiness.

"You don't have anything left to offer me, Frank," I said calmly. I reached over, closed the laptop screen, and pulled the USB drive out. I dropped it into the front pocket of my cardigan.

"You can't prove I forged that check!" Frank shouted, taking a menacing step toward me.

"She doesn't have to," Monica interrupted. She pulled her cell phone from her pocket and placed it on the table. The screen showed an active call. The timer read twelve minutes and forty seconds.

The contact name on the screen read: Detective Miller - Financial Crimes Division.

"I called the police before you broke the glass, Frank," Monica said coldly. "They’ve been listening to every word you said. Including the part where you admitted to sending me to the bank."

Blue and red lights suddenly flashed through the front windows, painting the dining room in erratic, strobe-like bursts. Sirens wailed, cutting through the quiet neighborhood street, growing louder until three police cruisers slammed into park outside the shattered door.

Frank backed away from the table, his chest heaving, looking wildly around the room for an exit.

But Daniel had already locked the back kitchen door.

May you like

"You’re going to lose everything, Anne!" Frank screamed at me as two uniformed officers stepped through the broken door frame with their hands on their holsters. "The feds will take it all!"

"Let them," I said, turning my back on him. "I know how to rebuild. You don't."
