Chapter 6 - The Bankruptcy Card and the Forged Signature

"I didn't schedule a bankruptcy consultation," Daniel said, staring at the card as if it might burn his fingers. "My business LLC has zero debt. Mom paid for the equipment in cash, and I've been covering the operating costs from my savings."

Sarah rushed forward, grabbing the card. "Then why does your father have an appointment in your name for tomorrow morning?"

Robert, who had followed us inside and was quietly locking the back door, let out a heavy sigh. "Because Frank co-signed the original incorporation papers for the restaurant three years ago. Remember, Daniel? You needed a guarantor for the commercial insurance policy."

Daniel nodded slowly. "Yeah, but he never put any money in. He just signed as a silent secondary."

"Being a secondary on an LLC means he has legal access to the business credit profile," Robert explained, his voice grim. "Frank doesn't do favors. If he has an appointment with a bankruptcy lawyer in your name, he has attached debt to this restaurant."

"Get the laptop," I told Sarah. "Pull up the business accounts right now."

We cleared the tulips off the nearest dining table. Sarah opened her laptop, her fingers flying across the keyboard as she logged into the restaurant's commercial banking portal. Daniel leaned over her shoulder, his breathing erratic. Monica stood frozen near the door, clutching her expensive coat, finally realizing the man she loved was a monster.

The screen loaded. Sarah clicked on the primary operating account.

"The balance is zero," Sarah whispered.

"That's impossible," Daniel said, pushing closer to the screen. "We had forty thousand dollars in operating cash left to cover the first month of payroll and food orders. I checked it this morning."

"Look at the recent transactions," I ordered.

Sarah clicked the dropdown menu. A single line item appeared, time-stamped at 4:15 PM today, just hours before Frank handed me the divorce petition.

WITHDRAWAL: $40,000. AUTHORIZED SIGNATURE TRANSFER.

"He drained it," Daniel said, his voice breaking. "He took the last of the cash. He’s going to default the LLC, declare bankruptcy on my behalf tomorrow morning to legally dissolve the restaurant, and leave me with nothing while he keeps the building."

Sarah clicked on the scanned image of the authorization check processed by the bank.

The image expanded on the screen, showing the front of the digital check. The payee line was made out to Camper Holdings LLC—a shell company Frank had obviously named as a cruel joke about my inheritance.

But it was the signature line at the bottom that made my blood run cold.

It wasn't Frank's signature.

The signature authorizing the theft of Daniel's forty thousand dollars was perfectly looped, slanted slightly to the right, crossing the 't' with a sharp dash.

It was my signature.

"He forged my name," I said, my voice dropping to a whisper. "He drained your account, and he forged my signature on the withdrawal slip."

Frank had orchestrated the perfect crime. Tomorrow, when Daniel discovered the missing money, Frank would point to the signature. He would tell the police and the lawyers his tragic story: his gambling-addict wife had stolen their son's money in a desperate bid to cover her debts, forcing Frank to divorce her and buy the building to save the family from complete ruin.

I would go to prison, Daniel would lose his dream, and Frank would fly off to his luxury condo with his mistress.

Then Monica stepped forward, her face completely pale.

"He didn't forge it digitally," Monica said, her voice shaking violently. She reached into her designer tote bag again and pulled out a crumpled pink carbon-copy receipt. "Frank asked me to drop a sealed envelope in the bank drop-box downtown at exactly 4:15 PM today. He told me it was your severance check, Anne. He told me he wanted to make sure you were taken care of."

She dropped the pink bank receipt onto the table.

"I physically deposited the forged check," Monica cried. "He used me as the mule. If the police pull the bank security footage, they won't see Frank. They’ll see me."
