Chapter 8 - The Confession in the Rain

Dawn broke over Chicago in shades of bruised purple and pale gold.
I woke up around 7:00 AM, the sunlight streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse guest suite. I showered, dressing in a clean silk blouse and tailored trousers Ethan’s executive assistant had apparently had delivered overnight.
When I stepped out into the main office area, the smell of fresh black coffee filled the air.
Ethan was sitting at his mahogany desk, reviewing a stack of legal documents with reading glasses perched on the bridge of his nose. He looked tired—he clearly hadn't slept—but when he looked up and saw me, his face softened instantly.
"Good morning," he said, standing up and walking over with a steaming ceramic mug. "Black, two sugars, just how you like it when you're working a double shift."
A genuine smile touched my lips as I took the mug. "Thank you. Did you sleep at all?"
"I had too much to review," Ethan admitted, rubbing the back of his neck. "Federal prosecutors called an hour ago. Dr. Vaughn has been officially charged with domestic abuse, financial fraud, and extortion. His bail hearing is scheduled for this afternoon, and with the evidence we provided, the judge isn't going to let him walk."
I let out a long, shaky breath, the last remaining knot of tension in my shoulders finally uncoiling. "It's really over?"
"It's really over," Ethan confirmed, stepping closer to me.
We stood near the glass wall, looking out over the waking city. The autumn rain had started to fall, drumming a soft, rhythmic beat against the thick windowpanes.
"What happens to me now?" I asked softly, staring into my coffee. "My apartment lease is in Adrian's name. My job here... well, after everything that happened last night, I don't know if it's appropriate for me to remain your executive assistant."
Ethan went completely still.
He reached out, gently taking the coffee mug from my hands and setting it down on a nearby table. Then, he captured both of my hands in his, turning to face me fully.
"Ava," he said, his voice dropping into that deep, resonant tone that made my breath hitch. "For eleven months, I watched you run my company, manage my life, and care for everyone around you while carrying an impossible burden alone."
"Ethan..."
"Let me finish," he interrupted gently. "I didn't hire you just because you were the best applicant in the pool. When you walked into my office a year ago for your interview, I knew within thirty seconds that you were the missing piece I didn't know I was looking for. I spent eleven months torturing myself, watching you wear another man's ring, telling myself I had to stay strictly professional because I respected your boundaries."
Tears pricked behind my eyes. "You loved me?"
"I fell in love with you the day you left a ham sandwich and a sticky note on my desk telling me to stop working past midnight," Ethan confessed, a vulnerable, boyish smile breaking across his handsome face. "And last night, when I saw what he did to you... something inside me broke. I realized I can't imagine my life, my company, or my future without you in it."
"Ethan, I'm... I'm broken right now," I whispered, my voice cracking. "I have so much baggage, so much history with the Vance family, with the trial coming up..."
"We will face it together," Ethan interrupted fiercely. "As partners. Not boss and assistant. Unless, of course... you don't feel the same way."
I didn't answer with words.
Instead, I stepped forward, wrapped my arms around his neck, and pressed my lips softly against his.

For a second, Ethan froze in absolute surprise—and then his strong arms came around my waist, lifting me slightly as he kissed me back with all the passion, restraint, and devotion he had kept locked away for eleven agonizing months.
Outside, the rain fell harder against the glass, washing away the old world, the bruises, and the lies.
