Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Miracle Surgeon

"Get off me!" Adrian screamed, thrashing wildly beneath Ethan’s weight.
Ethan didn't hesitate. He pinned Adrian’s right arm behind his back with brutal, efficient strength, pressing his knee firmly into the surgeon's spine. The billionaire’s tie was crooked, his breathing heavy, but his grip remained like iron.
"Mr. Carter! Stop, sir, we have it!" Marcus and three other security guards swarmed the table, pulling Adrian off the floor and wrenching his arms into heavy steel handcuffs.
The ballroom was absolute chaos. Donors were standing up, grabbing their coats, and rushing toward the exits. Flashbulbs strobed continuously as reporters shouted questions.
Adrian writhed in the cuffs, his silver-streaked hair matted with sweat, screaming obscenities as the guards dragged him toward the ballroom doors.
"You're ruined, Carter!" Adrian shrieked, spitting blood onto the pristine carpet. "I'll sue you into the ground! My lawyers will take everything you own!"
"Your lawyers are currently being audited by federal tax fraud investigators as we speak," Ethan replied calmly, standing up and dusting off his tuxedo pants. He didn't sound angry anymore; he sounded like an executioner reading a final sentence. "And your medical license was officially suspended by the state board three minutes ago. Take him out."
The heavy oak doors slammed shut behind Adrian as security hauled him away in disgrace.
Silence settled over the remnants of the ballroom—a heavy, suffocating silence broken only by the hum of the overhead projector still displaying my bruised kitchen on the screen.
Ethan turned around, wiping a drop of sweat from his forehead, and walked straight toward our table.
His eyes found mine instantly.
Without a word, he reached out his hand.
I looked down at my trembling fingers, then up into his dark, steady eyes. All the armor I had worn for eleven months—all the quiet endurance, the secret longings, the fear of disappointing him—evaporated into thin air.
I placed my hand in his.
His fingers closed around mine, warm, secure, and unbreakable.
"Are you alright?" he asked softly, ignoring the hundreds of staring eyes and whispering reporters around us.
"I... I think I am," I whispered back, a tear finally breaking free and rolling down my cheek.
"Come on," Ethan said, gently pulling me out of my chair and away from the ruined VIP table. "Let's get you out of here."
He led me past the whispers, past the cameras, and away from the wreckage of Adrian's empire, guiding me toward the private elevator that led up to his penthouse office.

Little did I know, as the elevator doors closed and locked out the rest of the world, Adrian's arrest was only the prologue.
In the quiet sanctuary of Ethan's top-floor office, a locked filing cabinet was about to pop open—revealing a secret about my own family that would completely rewrite everything I thought I knew about my past, and tie my heart to Ethan's in a way neither of us could have ever predicted.
