Chapter 8 - THE TARNISHED ROSARY

The revelation echoed in the opulent dining room, shattering the very foundation of the Moretti family.

You are my son.

Peter stood frozen, his eyes wide and unblinking, staring at the tiny, faded photograph of a baby inside the tarnished silver rosary. The man who had spent his life believing he was the son of a ruthless, murderous uncle was now faced with a reality he couldn't comprehend.

“No,” Peter gasped, shaking his head violently. “No, my mother… my mother died when I was born. My father told me—”

Lydia’s hands moved, her signs laced with a fierce, agonizing love.

I interpreted, my voice trembling with the emotional weight of her words.

“She says, ‘Your father lied to you, Peter. My brother lied to you. They told the family your mother died in childbirth to cover up the fact that I was pregnant. They couldn't allow a woman to hold power in the syndicate, and they couldn't allow my child to inherit the legacy. So they took you from my arms and gave you to him.’”

Peter stumbled backward, knocking over his heavy dining chair. It crashed to the marble floor, the sound sharp as a gunshot.

“You’re my mother?” Peter choked out, tears finally spilling over his eyelashes.

Lydia nodded, tears streaming down her own wrinkled cheeks. She reached her hands out toward him, an open, desperate plea for the child she had mourned for half a century.

“All this time,” Peter whispered, looking between Lydia and Adrian. “All this time, I thought I was the son of the man who murdered your parents, Adrian. I’ve carried the guilt of his sins my entire life. I let Vanessa manipulate me because I thought I didn't deserve any better.”

Adrian stood in stunned silence. The cousin he had always kept at arm’s length, the man he had secretly resented for the sins of his father, wasn’t his uncle’s son at all. He was his aunt’s.

Adrian slowly walked around the table. He stopped in front of Peter.

For a terrifying second, I thought the mafia boss might strike him.

Instead, Adrian reached out and pulled Peter into a fierce, crushing embrace.

“You’re not his blood, Peter,” Adrian said roughly, his own eyes shining with unshed tears. “You’re hers. You’re clean. You’re my brother.”

Peter broke down, sobbing into Adrian’s shoulder, the crushing weight of a lifetime of misplaced guilt finally lifting off his chest.

Sophia walked over to Lydia, kneeling beside her wheelchair, and wrapped her arms around the elderly woman’s waist, resting her head in Lydia’s lap.

“You stayed for us,” Sophia wept softly. “You let them take your baby, and you stayed to protect Adrian and me.”

Lydia stroked Sophia’s hair, looking down at the niece she had raised as her own daughter. She signed with one hand.

“She says, ‘Family is not just blood. It is the choice to stay in the dark with the people you love.’”

The remaining guests in the room watched in absolute, stunned silence. They had come to witness a sterile business transaction. Instead, they had witnessed the violent death of a mafia empire and the agonizing, beautiful rebirth of a family.

But the night wasn’t over.

Suddenly, the side door leading to the kitchens burst open.

One of Adrian’s massive security guards stumbled backward into the dining room, clutching his stomach. Blood poured through his fingers, staining his white shirt crimson.

“Boss!” the guard choked out, falling to his knees.

Behind him, emerging from the shadows of the hallway, was Daniel.

The attorney’s face was covered in blood, his eyes wild and completely unhinged. In his hand, he held a long, serrated chef’s knife he had grabbed from the kitchen.

“Nobody locks me in a cellar!” Daniel screamed, advancing into the room. “If I’m going to prison, I’m taking the Morettis with me!”

He didn’t lunge for Adrian. He didn't lunge for Peter.

He lunged directly at Lydia.

“Aunt Lydia!” Adrian roared, reaching for the gun holstered at his waist.

But Daniel was too close, and Adrian was too far away.

Time seemed to slow down. I saw the flash of the silver blade raised high in the air. I saw Sophia scream, paralyzed beside the wheelchair.

I didn’t think. I reacted.

I threw myself across the space between us, shoving Lydia’s wheelchair backward with all my strength.

The blade slashed downward, tearing through the fabric of my dress and slicing a shallow, burning line across my left shoulder.

I cried out, stumbling backward into the mahogany table, knocking the brass key and the silver rosary to the floor.

Daniel raised the knife again, his eyes locked on me.

Before he could swing, a deafening crack echoed through the room.

Daniel froze. The knife slipped from his fingers, clattering loudly against the marble tiles. He looked down at his chest, a look of profound confusion crossing his face, before he collapsed face-first onto the floor, completely motionless.

I slumped against the table, clutching my bleeding shoulder, gasping for air.

I looked up.

Adrian stood ten feet away, his gun raised, smoke curling lazily from the barrel. His face was a mask of cold, absolute finality.

He slowly lowered the weapon. He didn't look at Daniel's body. He walked straight toward me.

“Helen,” Adrian said, his voice urgent. He holstered his gun and pressed his hands over my wound to stop the bleeding. “Are you alright? Somebody call a paramedic!”

“I’m okay,” I breathed, wincing at the pain. “It’s not deep.”

Lydia wheeled her chair forward, her face pale with terror. She reached out, her trembling hands gently touching my face.

She signed, her fingers moving frantically.

“She says, ‘You saved my life.’” I translated my own rescue, my voice shaky.

“You saved all of us,” Peter said, rushing to my side with a clean linen napkin to press against my shoulder.

Adrian looked at me, his dark eyes filled with a respect that few people in his world ever earned.

“You are not just an interpreter, Helen,” Adrian said softly, holding the napkin against my skin. “You are family now. Whatever you need, for the rest of your life, it is yours.”

I looked at the people surrounding me. A mafia boss, a traumatized sister, a newly discovered son, and an elderly matriarch who had just dismantled a criminal empire to save them all.

The sirens began to wail in the distance, growing louder as the police and paramedics approached the estate.

The long, bloody night was finally coming to an end.
