Chapter 6 - THE BROKEN WATCH

"You are not touching my son," Nathan said, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous gravel he didn't know he possessed. He pushed Elena and Leo further behind him, shielding them with his body.

Victor Thorne sighed, adjusting the cuffs of his expensive suit. "Nathan, don't play the protective father now. It's off-brand. Just open the safe."

Nathan’s mind raced. The floor safe in the living room. He had installed it three years ago. The only things inside were the original deeds to the house, some old family jewelry, and...

He froze.

Olivia had told Thorne about the safe. Olivia knew the feds were coming. Olivia had orchestrated everything.

She wasn't trying to get Leo hurt. She was setting a trap.

"Elena," Nathan said quietly over his shoulder. "Take Leo to the kitchen. Do not come out."

Elena didn't argue. She grabbed the boy and ran.

Nathan turned back to Thorne. "Fine. I'll open it. But you take what's inside and you leave my family alone."

Thorne gestured toward the living room rug. "Lead the way."

Nathan walked over to the heavy Persian rug and rolled it back. He entered the combination into the digital keypad embedded in the floor. The heavy steel door popped open with a hiss.

Nathan reached inside.

He felt the velvet boxes of jewelry. He felt the thick manila envelopes containing the deeds.

But his fingers brushed against something else. Something cold and metallic.

He pulled it out.

It was an antique, gold pocket watch. The glass face was shattered, the hands frozen precisely at 11:42.

Nathan stared at it. He recognized it instantly.

It belonged to Victor Thorne.

Four months ago, Thorne had beaten a rival developer into a coma in a parking garage in Houston. The police had investigated, but Thorne had provided an ironclad alibi, claiming he was at a private poker game. The victim had testified that his attacker had dropped a gold pocket watch, but the police never found it.

Until now.

"What is this?" Nathan whispered, looking up at Thorne.

Thorne’s face lost all its smugness. He stared at the broken watch in Nathan's hand, his eyes widening in absolute horror.

"Where did you get that?" Thorne demanded, taking a step forward.

"I didn't put it here," Nathan said, scrambling backward.

The sound of shattering glass exploded from the front of the house.

"FBI! Nobody move!"

Dozens of armed federal agents poured through the front door and the shattered bay windows. Red laser sights painted both Nathan and Thorne.

"Drop the weapon!" an agent screamed at Thorne, who had instinctively reached for a concealed holster.

Thorne froze, raising his hands slowly.

An older agent in a windbreaker stepped through the crowd, walking directly up to Nathan. He looked down at the broken watch in Nathan's hand.

"Mr. Reed," the agent said. "My name is Agent Harris. We received an anonymous tip this morning that the missing evidence from the Houston assault case was locked in your floor safe. And that Victor Thorne was on his way here to retrieve it."

Nathan looked at the watch, then at Thorne, who was being aggressively handcuffed by three agents.

Thorne was glaring at Nathan with pure, murderous intent. "You set me up, Reed. You're a dead man."

"I didn't!" Nathan stammered.

Agent Harris took the watch from Nathan's shaking hand, dropping it into an evidence bag. "Mr. Thorne, you're under arrest for aggravated assault and extortion. Mr. Reed, you need to come with us."

"Wait!" Nathan begged. "My son. My sister is in the kitchen with my son. Please, don't scare him."

Harris nodded to another agent, who went to the kitchen to escort Elena and Leo out safely.

As they marched Nathan out of his own house in handcuffs, the neighborhood was lined with police cruisers and news vans. The humiliation was absolute.

But as they pushed him into the back of a dark SUV, Nathan finally understood Olivia's brilliant, ruthless design.

She hadn't just exposed his affairs and his fraud. She had systematically eliminated the physical threat against their son. By planting Thorne's missing watch in the safe and tipping off the FBI, she had weaponized the federal government to arrest a dangerous loan shark, ensuring Thorne would be locked away for decades.

She had protected Leo using the very man who came to threaten him.

And as the SUV doors slammed shut, Nathan realized one more terrifying fact.

Olivia had saved their son. But she had left Nathan entirely at the mercy of the feds.

He was completely alone.
