Chapter 7 - THE LEDGER

The sound of Vanessa pounding against the heavy oak doors of the study echoed through the grand foyer like a trapped rat desperate for escape. Luca stood up slowly, helping Isabella to her feet. The beautiful, emotional reunion on the driveway hardened into something cold and terrifying. The mafia boss returned, his eyes locking onto the mansion doors. “Take Daniel to the kitchen,” Luca ordered his men, his voice low and devoid of all warmth. “Get him something to eat. Keep him away from the foyer.” Daniel didn't protest. He hugged his mother one more time before a guard gently led him away. Luca turned to Isabella. He didn't ask if she was ready. He knew she was. Together, they walked up the stone steps and into the mansion. Teresa and I followed closely behind. We stood in the grand marble foyer. The two security guards stationed outside the study stood at attention. “Unlock it,” Luca commanded. The deadbolts clicked loudly. One of the guards pushed the heavy doors open. Vanessa stumbled forward, her red gown ruined, her hair a chaotic mess. She looked frantic, expecting to see a sympathetic guard she could bribe or manipulate. Instead, she saw Luca. And standing right next to him, bruised but very much alive, was Isabella. Vanessa stopped dead in her tracks. All the breath left her lungs. Her eyes widened in absolute, paralyzing terror. She took a slow, trembling step backward. “Luca,” Vanessa gasped, her voice barely a whisper. “Please. It was my brothers. They forced me. I didn't want to hurt anyone.” Luca didn't speak. He walked slowly into the study, forcing Vanessa to retreat until her back hit the mahogany desk. “Your brothers set a trap at the railyard tonight,” Luca said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “They tried to blow my men to pieces. When I caught them, they were very eager to explain exactly whose plan it was.” Vanessa shook her head frantically. “They’re lying! They hate me!” “They told me everything, Vanessa,” Luca continued, stopping mere inches from her. “They told me about the kidnapping. The fake affair. And the sixty million dollars you transferred out of my offshore accounts three hours ago.” Vanessa swallowed hard. “I can give it back! I can reverse the transfers right now! Just let me walk out that door, and you’ll have every cent back.” “I don't care about the money,” Luca said softly. He stepped aside, revealing Isabella standing in the doorway. Isabella walked into the study. She didn't look like a hostage anymore. She looked like a queen reclaiming her throne. “You thought you were so clever, Vanessa,” Isabella said, stopping next to Luca. “You thought because you smiled and played the innocent victim, nobody saw what you were doing. But I saw it. I saw you skimming from the union accounts months before you took me.” Vanessa sneered, a flash of her arrogant cruelty returning. “You saw nothing. And even if you did, you have no proof. It’s your word against mine. The money is gone, and the police will never trace it.” “I don't need to trace the money,” Isabella said with a cold, triumphant smile. “Because I found your ledger.” Vanessa’s sneer vanished. Pure panic flared in her eyes. “You’re bluffing.” “Am I?” Isabella turned to Teresa. “Teresa, do you remember the old grandfather clock in the dining room? The one that hasn't kept time in ten years?” Teresa smiled knowingly. “I remember perfectly, mia cara.” “Inside the false bottom of the pendulum casing,” Isabella instructed. Luca nodded to one of his guards in the hallway. The man jogged toward the dining room. Less than a minute later, the guard returned. He was holding a thick, black, leather-bound notebook. He handed it to Isabella. Vanessa let out a horrific, guttural scream and lunged across the desk, trying to snatch the book from Isabella’s hands. Luca caught Vanessa effortlessly by the throat, pinning her back against the desk. He didn't squeeze, but his grip was unyielding. Isabella opened the black ledger. “This doesn't just detail the money you stole from Luca,” Isabella said, her voice ringing clearly through the silent room. “It documents every bribe, every extortion, and every hit your father ordered over the last five years. It has names, dates, and account numbers for every corrupt politician the Bellini family owns.” Vanessa sobbed, thrashing against Luca’s grip. “No! You can’t! They’ll kill me!” “This ledger,” Isabella continued, closing the book with a heavy thud, “is the destruction of the entire Bellini syndicate. Hand this to the FBI, and your father, your brothers, and everyone connected to you will spend the rest of their lives in federal prison.” Vanessa stopped struggling. She went completely limp, sliding down the edge of the desk until she was sitting on the floor, weeping in absolute defeat. She was ruined. Her family was ruined. The empire she had tried to build on Isabella’s pain had collapsed on top of her. Luca looked down at the pathetic woman on the floor. “Take her to the basement,” Luca ordered his guards. “Put her in the cell next to Marcus. They can keep each other company until the feds arrive tomorrow morning to collect my anonymous gift.” Two guards hauled Vanessa to her feet and dragged her out of the study. She didn't fight them. She didn't speak. She just stared blankly ahead, completely broken. When the doors finally shut behind her, the heavy, suffocating tension that had plagued the mansion for eleven months finally evaporated. Luca turned to Isabella. He looked at the black ledger in her hands. “You knew,” Luca whispered, profound awe in his voice. “You knew they were stealing from me, and you found the proof.” “I was trying to protect you, Luca,” Isabella said softly, stepping closer to him. “But before I could show you the ledger, Vanessa’s brothers broke into the house. I had to hide it. I couldn't tell you the truth because they threatened to kill Daniel if I didn't write that letter saying I was leaving you.” Luca closed his eyes, the guilt washing over his features. “I should have known. I never should have believed you would leave us.” “They manipulated everything perfectly,” Isabella said, reaching up to gently touch his cheek. “You couldn't have known.” Luca opened his eyes. He leaned down and pressed his forehead against hers. “I’m sorry,” Luca whispered. “I am so, so sorry.” “We’re okay,” Isabella promised, fresh tears shining in her eyes. “We’re together. That’s all that matters.” I stood by the doorway, quietly wiping a tear from my own cheek. Teresa walked over to me and gently placed her frail hand over mine. “You did well tonight, Hannah,” Teresa said warmly. “Very well.” “I just wanted to help, Mrs. Moretti.” “You did more than help,” Luca said, turning to face me. He walked across the study and stopped in front of me. The mafia boss, the man who terrified everyone in the city, looked at me with absolute, profound gratitude. “You stood up to Vanessa when no one else would,” Luca said softly. “You listened to my mother when everyone else called her crazy. You drove into the woods alone to protect my wife. I owe you a debt I can never repay.” I blushed, looking down at my shoes. “You don't owe me anything, Mr. Moretti. I was just doing my job.” “Your job was serving dinner,” Luca corrected with a slight smile. “You saved my family.” He reached into his pocket and pulled out a sleek, black metal card. He held it out to me. “What is this?” I asked, hesitating to take it. “It’s an exclusive account card,” Luca explained. “It has no limit. It is tied directly to my personal offshore trust.” My eyes widened in shock. “Mr. Moretti, I can’t take this! It’s too much!” “You told me your mother is struggling with physical therapy bills,” Luca said firmly, stepping forward and placing the card directly into my hand. “With this card, those bills are paid. Her rent is paid. For the rest of her life. You will never have to worry about money again.” I stared at the heavy black card in my palm. The weight of it felt like absolute freedom. The constant, suffocating fear of debt that had haunted me for years was simply… gone. Tears spilled over my cheeks. I looked up at Luca, unable to find the words to thank him. “However,” Luca added, his tone shifting back to the authoritative businessman, though his eyes were kind. “I do have one condition.”
