THE WEDDING FLIGHT / Chapter 1 / 8

Chapter 2 - THE PASSENGER ON THE MANIFEST

“Isabella Moretti.”

Marco read the name aloud, his voice flat, completely devoid of the usual professional detachment. The silence in the dining room was suddenly thicker than the humid summer air pressing against the windows.

Thirty-four guests sat paralyzed. Vanessa Bellini froze, her face drained of color, perfectly matched by Adrian Moretti, who was backing away from the table as if the floor had turned to hot coals.

I squeezed Oliver’s small hand. The little boy was staring at his father, his eyes wide and uncertain.

Luca didn't move. He stood with one arm wrapped protectively around his son, his eyes locked on Marco.

“Read that again,” Luca commanded, his voice dropping an octave, turning into something dangerous and lethal.

“Passenger two,” Marco said, holding out the tablet for Luca to see. “Isabella Moretti. Booked on the same charter flight scheduled for the morning of your wedding.”

Luca stared at the screen. His chest rose and fell in a slow, jagged breath. Two years ago, he had buried his wife after a devastating car crash. I had watched him stand in the freezing rain at her gravesite, a broken man holding his motherless son.

Now, her name was on a flight manifest alongside his own, on a plane that had been flagged for catastrophic maintenance failure.

“A ghost isn't boarding a plane,” Luca said softly, his dark eyes shifting from the tablet to his younger brother. “So who is using her name, Adrian? And why?”

Adrian swallowed hard, pulling at the collar of his expensive dress shirt. “I… I don't know, Luca. It’s a mistake. A clerical error. You know how these charter companies are.”

“Do I?” Luca asked, taking a slow step toward him. He gently moved Oliver behind my legs. “Emma, take him out of the room.”

“No!” Vanessa suddenly shrieked, breaking the silence. She lunged forward, grabbing Luca’s arm. “Don't send the boy away! This is all a misunderstanding! Adrian is right, it’s just a mistake on the paperwork!”

Luca looked down at Vanessa’s hand gripping his sleeve. The look of utter disgust on his face made her instantly release him.

“You threw away my wife’s photograph,” Luca said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “You threatened to send my son to boarding school. And you told him I wouldn't be coming back after the wedding.”

Vanessa opened her mouth, tears welling in her eyes, trying to play the victim. “Luca, please—”

“Take Oliver upstairs, Emma,” Luca repeated, not taking his eyes off his brother.

I nodded, placing a hand on Oliver’s shoulder. “Come on, sweetheart. Let’s go get that extra dinner roll.”

Oliver didn't want to leave his father, but he obeyed, walking quietly beside me toward the massive double doors of the dining room.

Just as my hand touched the brass handle, Adrian suddenly snapped.

“Don't let her leave!” Adrian yelled, pointing a shaking finger directly at me. “She’s the one who set this up! The maid!”

I froze, spinning around.

The entire room gasped.

“Me?” I asked, my voice trembling.

“Yes, you!” Adrian practically spat, desperate to deflect the crosshairs off himself. “You’ve always hated Vanessa! You’ve been trying to poison Oliver against her since the engagement! You planted those documents! You probably hacked the charter company!”

Luca didn't even look at me. He just stared at his brother with a profound, heartbreaking pity.

“Adrian,” Luca said softly. “Emma doesn't even have the Wi-Fi password for the study. Do you really expect me to believe she orchestrated corporate espionage and chartered a condemned aircraft?”

“She’s obsessed with you!” Vanessa chimed in, grasping at the lifeline Adrian threw her. “She wants to take Isabella’s place! Everyone sees it!”

My cheeks burned with humiliation. I had never crossed a line with Luca. I had only ever cared for his son.

Luca closed his eyes for a brief second, exhaustion washing over his features. When he opened them, the last shred of brotherly affection was completely gone.

“Marco,” Luca said. “Lock the doors.”

The heavy click of the deadbolt echoed through the silent room.

Luca walked back to the head of the table. He picked up the blue folder, the flight manifest, and Isabella’s torn note.

“Two years ago,” Luca began, his voice echoing in the vast room, “the police said Isabella lost control of her car on the coastal highway. They said the brakes failed. It was ruled a tragic accident.”

He looked directly at Adrian.

“But if I die on that charter plane next month, it won't look like an accident. It will look like a mechanical failure. Just like her car.”

Adrian shook his head violently. “Luca, you’re insane. You’re imagining things.”

“Am I?” Luca pulled a small, silver object from his jacket pocket and tossed it onto the mahogany table.

It landed with a heavy clink.

It was a silver tie clip. Engraved with the initials A.M.

“The police found this in the wreckage of Isabella’s car,” Luca revealed, his eyes burning into his brother’s soul. “I’ve kept it for two years. I convinced myself you must have dropped it when you were helping her load the trunk that morning.”

Vanessa let out a strangled gasp, stepping away from Adrian.

“But now,” Luca continued, his voice devoid of all warmth, “I’m looking at a flight manifest that puts me on a doomed plane, and gives you complete control over my son’s trust. A trust that Isabella specifically begged me to protect from you.”

Adrian’s facade finally shattered. The arrogance bled out of him, leaving a terrified, cornered animal.

“It wasn't my idea!” Adrian screamed, pointing at Vanessa. “She made me do it! Her father made me do it! The Bellinis are broke, Luca! They needed the Moretti accounts to pay off the cartel!”

Vanessa shrieked, lunging at Adrian, but Marco intercepted her, grabbing her by the arm and holding her back.

“You lying coward!” Vanessa spat, tears ruining her perfectly applied makeup.

“Isabella found out about the embezzlement,” Adrian sobbed, completely breaking down. “She found the offshore transfers. She was going to tell you, Luca. Silvio Bellini tampered with her brakes to shut her up!”

The room erupted into chaos. Guests were screaming, pushing back from the table.

I covered Oliver’s ears, pulling him tightly against my chest.

Luca stood perfectly still amid the screaming. The man had just heard a confession to his wife’s murder from his own flesh and blood.

He didn't yell. He didn't pull a weapon.

He turned to Marco.

“Call the police,” Luca ordered quietly. “Tell them I have a confession to the murder of Isabella Moretti.”

But before Marco could dial, the massive glass windows overlooking the estate’s driveway suddenly shattered inwards.

A hail of bullets tore through the dining room.
