Chapter 8 - THE BLACK DIAMOND

Elena carefully unfolded the tiny square of paper.

Matteo’s handwriting, sharp and familiar, covered the small surface. It was dated a year ago.

“They will tell you to change. They will try to make you cold. Do not let them. You are the only light in this dark house. I am yours, completely.”

Tears finally spilled over Elena’s eyelashes, tracking through the soot on her cheeks.

“You didn't lose the locket,” Elena whispered, looking up at him. “You hid this inside it, knowing I would find it eventually.”

Matteo reached out and gently traced her cheekbone. “I wanted you to have proof that even when I was failing to protect you in public, my heart belonged to you in private.”

“You didn't fail me today,” Elena said, her voice fiercely tender.

“I almost did,” Matteo admitted, his voice rough. He looked at the chaos of the estate around them. The police sirens were beginning to wail in the distance. The cleanup would take months. The political fallout would take years.

He looked back at the woman who had burned her own life down to save his.

“Come with me,” Matteo said softly.

He took her hand and led her away from the grand staircase, away from the guards and the trustees, and down a quiet hallway to his private study.

He closed the heavy mahogany doors, shutting out the noise of the syndicate.

The room was still and peaceful. Snow had finally begun to fall outside the massive windows, coating the Lake Forest estate in a blanket of clean, undisturbed white.

Matteo walked over to his desk. He opened the top drawer and pulled out a small velvet box.

He walked back to Elena.

“When my mother put the family ring on Francesca last night,” Matteo began, his voice steady but laced with deep emotion, “I told myself it was just politics. I told myself it didn't matter because I knew the truth.”

He stopped in front of her, his large hands holding the box.

“But I was wrong. It did matter. Because when I let her wear it, I let you believe, even for a second, that you were replaceable.”

He opened the box.

Inside rested the Bellini family ring. The heavy antique gold. The massive black diamond.

Marco had recovered it from Francesca before the paramedics arrived.

Matteo looked at the ring, and then he looked at Elena.

“This ring has been poisoned by my mother’s pride for twenty years,” Matteo said quietly. “It stands for a legacy built on blood and lies.”

He took the ring out of the box.

And then, with deliberate, unhesitating force, Matteo threw the eighty-year-old heirloom directly into the roaring fireplace.

Elena gasped, her eyes widening as the priceless antique vanished into the flames.

“Matteo! What did you do?”

“I burned it,” Matteo said, stepping closer to her, his gray eyes burning with a heat that rivaled the fire. “I don't want a legacy built on blood. I want a future built on you.”

He reached into his jacket pocket.

He pulled out another ring.

It was the diamond he had given her beside Lake Michigan in the snow. The one she had left beside his wineglass.

Matteo didn't ask her to compromise this time. He didn't ask her to understand his family’s complicated rules.

He dropped to one knee.

“Elena,” Matteo said, his voice raw with unconditional love. “You are the bravest woman I have ever known. You repaired my father’s watch. You restored the truth of my family. And you saved my life today.”

He held the diamond up to her.

“I don't want you to be the lady of the Bellini family. I want you to be my wife. On your terms. No more secrets. No more shadows. Marry me, and I swear I will spend the rest of my life making sure you never have to walk through a dark tunnel alone again.”

Elena looked down at the powerful, terrifying man who was offering her his absolute surrender.

She didn't hesitate.

She held out her left hand.

“Put it back where it belongs,” she whispered, crying and laughing at the same time.

Matteo slid the diamond onto her finger. It fit perfectly. He stood up, wrapping his arms around her waist, and kissed her with a desperate, crushing intensity that promised forever.
