Chapter 8 - SUNRISE AT THE ROMANO ESTATE

Six months later.
Spring had finally arrived in Chicago, painting the sprawling lawns of the Romano estate in brilliant shades of emerald green, violet, and gold.
The heavy iron gates that had once shielded a fortress of secrecy and crime now stood wide open, welcoming local families, children, and community members onto the property. The former east wing holding cells had been completely gutted and transformed into a bright, modern community library, while the main mansion now served as the headquarters for the Elena Romano Foundation, dedicated to protecting whistleblowers and victims of corporate fraud.
Inside the sun-drenched family kitchen, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee, cinnamon, and toasted brioche filled the air.
I stood by the marble island, plating a stack of fluffy pancakes while humming a quiet tune. My life as a housemaid was a distant memory, though I still loved cooking in this kitchen more than anything else in the world.
"Careful with the syrup bottle, Claire, or you'll trigger a sugar emergency."
A strong pair of arms wrapped gently around my waist from behind, followed by a warm, familiar kiss pressed against the crook of my neck.
I smiled, setting the spatula down and leaning back against Gabriel’s chest. He wore a casual linen shirt with his sleeves rolled up, his dark hair neatly brushed, looking more like an ordinary, content man than a former syndicate kingpin.
"I'm a professional, Mr. Romano," I teased, turning around in his embrace and wrapping my arms loosely around his neck. "I know the precise amount of maple syrup required to maintain maximum happiness."
Gabriel chuckled, a rich, deep sound that warmed my entire chest. He rested his hands comfortably on my hips.
"Is that so? And what does the professional say about our plans for this afternoon?"
"Let me guess," I raised an eyebrow. "Margaret insisted on teaching me how to make her famous Italian lemon biscotti for the foundation's charity bake sale this weekend?"
"Guilty as charged," Gabriel grinned. "She's currently holding court in the garden with three city councilmen and two federal judges, convincing them all to double their charitable donations. Honestly, I think she runs this estate better than my father ever did."
"She earned the right," I said softly, looking up into his dark eyes.
Gabriel’s smile softened. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, familiar silver object—the vintage silver dinner bell Vincent used to ring every Sunday.
He placed it gently on the marble counter between us.
The name THOMAS REED was still engraved proudly on the bottom, right alongside VINCENT ROMANO. But etched just beneath them, in crisp, modern lettering added only a month ago, was a third name:
CLAIRE DONOVAN.
"My father used that bell to call people together for the wrong reasons," Gabriel murmured, his voice turning quiet and intensely sincere. "To keep secrets, to maintain control, to hide in the shadows."
He reached out, taking my left hand in his.
With a slow, deliberate movement, he slid a stunning, vintage diamond ring onto my ring finger—a ring that had once belonged to his mother, Elena, resized and polished to perfection.
"I want to use this bell to call our family together for the right reasons," Gabriel whispered, looking deep into my eyes with an intensity that made my heart race just as it had on our very first night. "Not as a housemaid, not as an employee, but as my partner, my equal, and my wife. Will you stay here with me, Claire? Forever?"
Tears of absolute, overwhelming happiness welled in my eyes.
I looked down at the sparkling diamond, then back up at the man who had torn down an empire of lies just to build a life built on truth and love.
May you like
I tightened my fingers around his hand, smiled through my tears, and gave the only answer that mattered.
"Yes."
