Chapter 5 - THE FAMILY BETRAYAL

“Karen?”

The name felt like a physical blow to my chest. I staggered backward, catching myself against the edge of the kitchen island.

“My sister?” I repeated, my voice cracking. “My sister Karen lives three states away in Ohio. She hasn’t visited in two years. What does she have to do with any of this?”

Michael didn’t answer right away. He stared down at the cream-colored card, his hands trembling. He turned it around so the harsh overhead lights illuminated the embossed text.

You are cordially invited to celebrate the marriage of David Alan Miller and Karen Marie Hayes.Saturday, November 7th at 4:00 PM.The Oceanview Estate, Newport, Rhode Island.

Saturday. Three days from now.

My sister. The sister I had talked to on the phone just last Tuesday about her gardening club and her dog’s arthritis. The sister who had sent a handmade birthday card to Emily two weeks ago with a fifty-dollar bill tucked inside.

“No,” I whispered, shaking my head violently. “No, this is a sick joke. It has to be a joke. David, tell me this is a sick joke!”

David stared at the floor, his lips pressed into a thin, white line. He didn't deny it.

Emily let out a choked sob, sinking down onto the kitchen floor with her back against the pantry cabinets, burying her face in her hands. Laura stood frozen by the door, looking just as shell-shocked as the rest of us.

“David,” Michael said, his voice dangerously low as he stepped toward him. “Care to explain how you’re marrying your sister-in-law while still legally married to my best friend’s wife?”

“It’s not what you think,” David muttered, finally finding his voice, though it sounded hollow and pathetic. “Karen and I… we didn’t start out as an affair. It happened by accident. When my dad got sick two years ago in Ohio, Karen was the one taking care of him. I went out there to help with the estate. We grew close.”

“Close?” I screamed, lunging forward. If Michael hadn't caught my arm and pulled me back, I would have clawed his eyes out. “She is my sister! You slept with my sister? You planned a wedding behind my back?”

“It wasn't just about the affair, Sarah!” David shouted back, his voice finally breaking under the pressure. He slammed his fists down on the counter. “Karen inherited land from our father in Ohio. Millions in natural gas rights! But the title is tied up in a family trust that requires a married spouse to execute the commercial release. If I marry her, the firm is saved! My debts are wiped out! Everything is fixed!”

Answer one: David’s betrayal with my sister wasn't driven purely by romance, but by a desperate, calculated scheme to steal my family’s inheritance to bail out his failing real estate empire.

“And what about Chloe?” Michael demanded, pointing to the jewelry store photograph. “Where does the twenty-four-year-old assistant fit into your grand financial strategy?”

David looked away, flushing crimson. “Chloe… Chloe was just for fun. She didn't know about Karen. I told her I was single.”

I let out a harsh, bitter laugh that felt more like crying. “You were juggling my sister, a twenty-four-year-old assistant, and making my best friend look like your mistress as a decoy. You are a sociopath, David.”

“Sarah, please,” David pleaded, taking a step toward me. “We can fix this. I’ll call off the wedding in Newport. I’ll sign the house over to you. We can—”

“You’re not signing the house over,” a cold, firm voice interrupted from the doorway.

We all turned.

Standing in the entryway, holding a leather briefcase and wearing a trench coat damp from the rain, was a tall, silver-haired man I recognized instantly.

Arthur Vance.

David’s senior business partner and the managing director of Miller & Vance Real Estate.

David’s face drained of what little color he had left. “Arthur… what are you doing here?”

Arthur didn't look at David. He walked past him into the kitchen, his sharp eyes scanning the bank statements, the jewelry photograph, and the wedding invitation scattered across the island. He stopped in front of me, his expression grim and apologetic.

“Good evening, Sarah. Michael. Emily,” Arthur said formally, nodding to each of us. He opened his briefcase and pulled out a thick, legal-bound folder stamped with the firm’s red seal.

“I’m sorry to intrude like this, especially given what you’ve just discovered,” Arthur said, laying the folder squarely in front of me. “But as of 5:00 PM today, the board of directors conducted an emergency forensic audit of David’s accounts.”

David choked out a breath. “Arthur, you said you’d give me until Monday—”

“That was before we found out you didn't just embezzle corporate funds, David,” Arthur cut him off, his voice like iron. “You forged my signature on a land acquisition loan in Ohio, using Karen Hayes as your co-signer.”

Open two: What was hidden in the legal folder Arthur brought, and how did it connect my sister Karen, the land in Ohio, and the federal audit?

Reversal: Arthur looked directly at me. “Sarah, your sister Karen isn't just an unwitting participant in David’s scheme. According to these wire transfers, Karen transferred fifty thousand dollars of her own money into David’s offshore account last month.”

My breath hitched. “Karen gave him money?”

May you like

“No,” Arthur corrected grimly. “She didn't give it to him. She stole it from your shared inheritance account back in Ohio, and David helped her launder it.”

Cliffhanger: Arthur flipped open the legal folder to the final page, revealing a certified death certificate. “And that’s not all, Sarah. According to this document filed in Ohio yesterday… your father didn’t die of natural causes two years ago.”
