Chapter 9 - THE HEIR OF TWO HOUSES

Two Months Later
The afternoon sun poured through the massive bay windows of the Moretti estate, bathing the grand drawing room in a warm, golden light.
I stood by the window, adjusting the collar of my navy-blue blazer.
I wasn't wearing a grey housekeeper's uniform. I would never wear one again.
Outside, on the sprawling green lawn, the sounds of laughter carried through the open glass doors.
Isabella and Anthony were walking arm-in-arm through the rose garden, pointing out the blooming flowers. They looked younger, the heavy burden of twenty-eight years of grief and hiding finally lifted from their shoulders.
They had been quietly married in a private ceremony three weeks ago.
Behind them, Teresa was being pushed in her wheelchair by Marco, smiling brightly as she watched her daughter and son-in-law.
“You look nervous.”
I turned around.
Luca was leaning against the mahogany doorframe, holding two crystal glasses of sparkling cider. He handed me one, a warm, genuine smile on his face.
“I am nervous,” I admitted, taking a sip. “The board meeting is in an hour. I’ve never run a charitable foundation before.”
“You’ll be fine,” Luca assured me, stepping into the sunlight beside me.
With Vincent Bellini sitting in a federal maximum-security prison awaiting trial for a laundry list of RICO charges, and the Bellini empire completely dismantled by the FBI using the ledgers we had stolen, the war was officially over.
But Luca hadn't stopped there.
He had honored his promise to legitimize the Moretti family. The shipping lines were now entirely legal, operating above board.
And the massive wealth that had been hoarded in both families' illegal accounts had been funneled into a massive new initiative: The Maria Reed Foundation, named after the brave nurse who had raised me, dedicated to funding pediatric care for underprivileged children in New Orleans.
Luca had named me the Executive Director.
“You have the instincts for it, Natalie,” Luca said, clinking his glass against mine. “You survived this family. Running a boardroom will be a walk in the park.”
I smiled, looking out at the garden again.
“What about Vanessa?” I asked quietly.
Luca took a slow sip.
“She’s in Paris,” he said. “She testified against Vincent, just like she promised. In exchange, the feds gave her immunity. Anthony set up a clean trust fund for her. She’s out of the life forever. I think she’s finally happy.”
I nodded, feeling a strange sense of peace. Vanessa had been cruel to me, but in the end, she had chosen her brother over her father’s poison. She had saved my life in that graveyard.
Suddenly, the drawing room doors opened wider.
Anthony walked in, leaving Isabella and Teresa chatting in the garden. He looked handsome and relaxed in a casual grey suit.
He walked over to me, wrapping a strong, warm arm around my shoulders.
“Are you ready for your first day as the boss, kiddo?” Anthony asked, kissing the top of my head.
“I think so,” I smiled, leaning into my father’s embrace.
It had taken time to adjust to calling him Dad, to calling Isabella Mom. The grief of losing Maria still ached in my chest, a quiet sorrow that I knew would never fully fade.
But Anthony and Isabella never tried to erase her memory. They had paid for a beautiful new headstone for Maria, engraved with the words: A Mother in Every Way That Mattered.
They knew she had been my mother first. And they were grateful.
Anthony reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, rectangular velvet box.
He held it out to me.
“Isabella and I wanted you to have this before you go to the meeting,” Anthony said softly.
I took the box, my hands trembling slightly.
I opened the lid.
Inside rested a stunning, delicate gold bracelet.
But it wasn't just a piece of jewelry.
Attached to the center of the gold chain was a tiny, perfectly crafted charm. It was half of the Moretti family crest—the shield—merged flawlessly with half of the Bellini crest—the falcon.
“You’re the bridge, Natalie,” Luca said from beside me, his voice filled with pride. “You’re the only person in the world who belongs to both families. You’re the reason the war is over.”
Tears pricked my eyes as Anthony gently took the bracelet from the box and fastened it around my wrist.
It rested perfectly next to the small gold locket I still wore around my neck every single day.
“Thank you,” I whispered, hugging my father tightly.
“Alright, let’s go,” Luca smiled, checking his watch. “The board of directors doesn’t like to be kept waiting. And neither do I.”
I took a deep breath, smoothing the front of my blazer.
I looked at my reflection in the dark glass of the bay window.
I saw a woman who had spent four years keeping her head down, serving champagne, and hiding in the shadows.
But that woman was gone.
I lifted my chin, looking directly at my own reflection.
May you like
I was Natalie Reed. I was the heir to two empires, the daughter of survivors, and I would never lower my head for anyone ever again.
I turned and walked out of the room, ready to take on the world.
