Chapter 6 - The Vault Trap

The heavy metallic echo of the vault door sealing shut vibrated through the floorboards.

Luca immediately rushed to the door, pulling desperately at the thick steel handle. It didn't budge. "We're locked in. Someone overrode the external panel."

Matteo didn't move. He was still staring at the birth certificate on the table.

"A son," Matteo whispered, his voice cracking. "She had my son."

Tears blurred my vision. My mother had carried the weight of an empire’s secrets to protect us. "She didn't tell you because she knew Domenico would kill him. Just like he killed your father."

Answer One, Open Two. Marco was the true heir to the De Luca family. If Domenico had known the child survived, Marco would have been dead twenty-six years ago. But wait... why had someone poisoned Matteo's plate tonight? If Domenico wanted Matteo dead, why frame my mother’s recipe?

"Matteo," I said, my heart racing as the pieces clicked together. "Domenico didn't poison your plate tonight."

Matteo finally looked up, his dark eyes snapping back to reality. "What?"

"Think about it," I urged, stepping closer to the viewing table. "If Domenico wanted you dead, he would have just shot you. He wouldn't use a complicated poison in a public restaurant. He didn't know I was going to cook that dish. Only Marco knew."

Matteo’s expression shifted. "Marco handed you the ticket."

"Marco knew the recipe," I said, my voice rising with panic. "Marco put the watch in the flour. Marco knew I was his sister. He set the whole thing up."

Luca turned from the locked door. "Why would your brother try to kill his own father?"

"Because he didn't know Matteo was his father," a voice crackled over the vault's intercom system.

It was Domenico.

"I have to admit," Domenico's voice echoed off the steel walls, dripping with smug satisfaction. "It took me years to find Isabella's bastard son. But when I finally tracked the boy down a year ago, I didn't kill him. I told him the truth. Well... a version of it."

Matteo slammed his fist against the steel wall. "What did you tell him, Domenico?!"

"I told him that you killed Isabella," Domenico replied smoothly. "I told him that you drove his mother into hiding, that you ruined his family. The boy is full of rage, Matteo. I just gave him the tools to exact his revenge."

My stomach violently rebelled. Marco had been working beside me in the kitchen for a year, secretly plotting to murder the man he believed destroyed our mother. Domenico had manipulated an innocent boy into patricide.

"Where is he?" Matteo demanded, his voice a terrifying roar.

"Oh, the paramedics took him to Mercy Hospital," Domenico said. "He took a small dose of the poison himself to make it look like he was attacked. Clever boy. He’ll survive. But unfortunately, the police are currently searching his apartment. They're going to find Isabella's recipe book, the rest of the poison, and a very detailed manifesto explaining why he wanted to kill Matteo De Luca."

Domenico laughed. "He takes the fall. You die in this vault when the oxygen runs out. And I finally take what is mine."

The intercom clicked off. Dead silence filled the vault.

"Luca," Matteo said, his voice entirely devoid of panic. It was the voice of a man who commanded an empire for a reason. "How much explosive do you have in your jacket?"

Luca reached into his tailored suit and pulled out a block of C4 the size of a deck of cards. "Enough to blow the hinges, Boss. But in a space this tight, the shockwave might liquefy our organs."

"Do it," Matteo ordered.

He grabbed my arm and pulled me to the furthest corner of the vault, shoving me behind a heavy metal safety cart. He covered my body with his own, his broad shoulders shielding me from the blast zone.

"Open your mouth and cover your ears," Matteo instructed.

I squeezed my eyes shut.

Luca set the charge, sprinted to our corner, and hit the detonator.
