Chapter 8 - THE TAKEOVER

Three Months Later

The boardroom of Apex Solutions—now legally rebranded as Sterling & Grant Innovations, honoring my maiden name and Nathan's true legacy—was bathed in the bright morning light of the Atlanta skyline.

I sat at the head of the massive glass table. I wasn't wearing the subdued, pastel dresses Grant always demanded. I wore a tailored, sharp charcoal suit.

Across from me sat the board of directors. A week ago, they had been Grant's loyal cronies. Today, they were sweating through their expensive shirts.

"As you can see from the forensic audit," I said, projecting the financial data onto the massive screen behind me, "former CEO Grant Sterling embezzled approximately fourteen million dollars over six years to cover his tracks regarding intellectual property theft and... other personal matters."

No one spoke. The news of Grant's indictment for first-degree murder, and Judith's indictment for federal fraud and forgery, had sent shockwaves through the tech world.

"The forged equity transfer has been voided by a federal judge," I continued, sliding a thick stack of legal documents down the table. "I have retained my fifty-one percent voting majority. Furthermore, the intellectual property patents have been rightfully restored to the estate of Nathan Grant."

I looked toward the door. Melissa walked in, looking thinner, older, but carrying a quiet dignity I hadn't seen in her before. She took a seat near the back.

"As the executor of Nathan's estate," Melissa spoke up, her voice steady, "I am signing over exclusive licensing rights of the algorithms to Claire Sterling, in exchange for a standard royalty trust for my son, Owen. We will not be participating in the daily operations of this company."

The board members furiously whispered among themselves.

"What does this mean for the leadership structure, Ms. Sterling?" one of the older board members asked nervously.

"It means I am the CEO," I stated, leaving no room for debate. "And the first order of business is severing all ties with the offshore shell companies Grant established. We are rebuilding this company on transparency, not blood."

I adjourned the meeting. As the executives filed out, trying to secure their jobs, Melissa approached me.

"How is Owen?" I asked softly.

"He's in intense therapy," Melissa said, offering a sad, fragile smile. "He knows the truth about Nathan. He knows Grant is his biological father, but he told the therapist last week that Nathan is his real dad. The man who raised him."

I nodded, feeling a deep ache for the boy who had been a pawn in Grant's narcissistic game. "If you ever need anything, Melissa. You call me."

"You saved us, Claire," she whispered, squeezing my hand before turning to leave. "You saved us all."

I stood alone in the boardroom for a moment, looking out over the city. I thought about the vows I had made to Grant a decade ago. For better or for worse. I had honored them. I had stayed through the abuse, the gaslighting, the coldness. But a vow to a monster is just a chain. And I had finally broken it.

I picked up my briefcase and walked out of the building. My driver was waiting downstairs, but I waved him off. It was a beautiful, crisp spring day, and I wanted to walk.
