Chapter 5 - THE SWISS SECRET

I stared at the black leather binder on my desk, the phone pressed hard against my ear.
"A fertility clinic in Geneva?" I repeated, my mind racing to process this new, bizarre piece of the puzzle. "Are you absolutely certain, Mr. Henderson?"
"Yes, Mrs. Whitmore. The Alpine Reproductive Institute. The check bounced because of the freeze you placed this morning. But the signature on the check... it matched the proxy Vanessa provided."
"Thank you, Mr. Henderson. Keep the freeze active. Reject everything."
I ended the call and sank into my armchair. A fertility clinic.
Adam and Vanessa had been married for five years. I knew they had struggled to conceive. Adam had mentioned it once, a quiet, shameful confession over coffee a year ago. But Geneva? Fifty thousand dollars?
I opened my laptop and searched for the Alpine Reproductive Institute. The website was sleek, discreet, and incredibly expensive. They specialized in elite, anonymous donor surrogacy.
Why would Vanessa steal my husband’s watch, pawn it to fake a debt, threaten me with a fake dementia diagnosis, and then try to wire fifty grand to Switzerland?
Unless... Adam didn't know about the clinic.
Answer One, Open Two.
Adam told me he was being blackmailed by Graham over a loan shark debt. But what if the loan shark didn't exist? What if Graham invented the debt to force Adam into compliance, while Vanessa was simultaneously siphoning money for her own secret agenda?
I needed proof. I needed to separate my son from his wife’s toxic grip before he went down with her sinking ship.
I called Richard back. "Change of plans," I told my lawyer. "I need you to investigate the Alpine Reproductive Institute in Geneva. Find out who the account holder is for a recent invoice of fifty thousand dollars. And Richard? Find out exactly how bankrupt Graham Price really is."
"I'm on it, Margaret," Richard said. "But you need to be careful. If they file that conservatorship on Friday, your assets will be frozen by the court. We have four days."
"That's plenty of time," I replied.
The next two days were a blur of meticulous planning. I didn't leave the house. I let Vanessa think she had terrified me into submission. I ignored her taunting text messages demanding I surrender my medical proxy.
On Wednesday afternoon, Richard arrived at my townhouse. He looked grim as he pulled a thick stack of files from his briefcase.
"You were right, Margaret," Richard said, laying the papers on my dining table. "Graham Price is drowning. His Ponzi scheme collapsed three weeks ago. He's facing a federal indictment. He needed the Whitmore Estate to liquidate assets and flee the country."
"And the loan shark Adam mentioned?" I asked.
Richard shook his head. "Fiction. Graham loaned Adam the money from his own dwindling accounts, framed it as a dangerous mob debt, and terrified your son into signing over his inheritance."
I closed my eyes, a wave of profound sadness washing over me. Adam had been played. He was weak, foolish, and easily manipulated, but he wasn't malicious. He was just terrified.
"And the Swiss clinic?" I asked, bracing myself.
Richard slid a single, damning piece of paper toward me. "Vanessa isn't trying to have Adam's baby, Margaret. She's trying to have her baby. She paid the clinic for an anonymous sperm donor and a surrogate. She’s planning to secure an heir to the Whitmore fortune, ensuring she has a permanent claim to the estate, even if she divorces Adam."
The sheer sociopathy of it took my breath away. She was going to use my money to buy a child that wasn't even my son's, just to lock herself into our family's wealth.
"Where are they now?" I asked.
"They rescheduled the 'vow renewal' party," Richard said, checking his notes. "Graham managed to front the cash for a different venue. The Sapphire Room at the Grand Hotel. Tonight at eight. It's his last desperate attempt to keep up appearances in front of his investors before the feds close in."
I looked up at the portrait of my husband. Thomas had always told me to strike when the enemy thought they had already won.
"Richard," I said, a cold, calm fire igniting in my chest. "Do you have the contact at the DA's office ready?"
"They are standing by," Richard confirmed.
May you like
"Good." I walked over to the hallway closet and pulled out the elegant black evening gown I had worn to Thomas’s retirement gala. "Because I have a vow renewal to attend."
I pinned Thomas’s pearl brooch to my dress. It was time to show the Prices what real power looked like.
