Chapter 3 - THE DOCTOR’S DILEMMA

The fluorescent lights of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital buzzed faintly, casting a harsh, unforgiving glare over Dr. Elena Morgan’s desk. It was 7:00 AM, and Elena had barely slept a wink.

Her coffee was stone cold, a gray film settled over the top. But her eyes weren't on her mug; they were locked on the confidential patient file resting beside her laptop.

Sophia Morgan. Gestational age: 20 weeks. Status: Undecided / Discussing options.

Elena rubbed her temples, feeling a dull, relentless migraine pounding behind her eyes. She was a brilliant surgeon, respected across Illinois, but right now, she felt trapped between two impossible worlds: the sacred, unyielding code of medical ethics, and the terrifying, all-consuming orbit of her older brother.

The door to her office clicked open, and her senior resident peeked in. "Dr. Morgan? You have morning rounds in ten minutes. And... Dr. Luke Morgan is on line two for you. He says it’s urgent."

Elena’s heart skipped a beat. A cold sweat prickled at the back of her neck.

"Did he say what it was about?" she asked, keeping her voice carefully modulated.

"No, doctor. Just that he needs to speak with you immediately."

Elena swallowed hard. "Tell him I’m scrubbing in for surgery. I'll call him back on my secure personal line later."

"Yes, Dr. Morgan."

The resident slipped out, closing the door softly. Elena exhaled a shaky breath. She knew Luke. If he was calling her office this early, something had detonated in his pristine, controlled world. And she had a sickening, sinking suspicion that it had nothing to do with corporate mergers or shipping warehouses.

It had to do with Sophia.

Just twenty-four hours earlier, Sophia had sat across from her in this exact room, eyes hollow, carrying a secret that could tear the Morgan family apart at the seams. A pregnancy. A planned termination. And a marriage that was clearly hanging by a frayed thread.

“Right now, you’re my physician,” Sophia had said, her voice quiet but unyielding. “I need you to treat me like any other patient. And I need my medical information kept private.”

Elena had agreed. She had sworn an oath to protect her patients above all else—above family, above power, above blood. But as a Morgan, keeping a secret from Luke felt like walking across a tightrope strung over an active volcano.

Her phone buzzed on the desk. It wasn't the office line; it was her direct cell.

The caller ID flashed Luke.

Elena stared at the screen as it lit up the sterile room. She let it ring once, twice, three times, listening to the rhythmic electronic chime echo in the quiet office.

Finally, she swiped to answer.

"Luke. I'm about to scrub into a procedure—"

"Cut the crap, Elena," Luke’s voice cut through the speaker like a razor blade. There was no greeting, no familial warmth. Only ice and granite. "Sophia walked out of the house last night. She left divorce papers on my bed."

Silence hung in the office. Even though Elena had suspected something monumental had happened, hearing it confirmed out loud made her stomach plummet.

"Divorce papers?" Elena repeated, feigning shock. "Luke, are you sure? I saw Sophia just yesterday, she seemed..."

"She seemed what?" Luke demanded, his voice rising dangerously. "Secretive? Distant? Did she say anything to you? Did she mention where she was going?"

"No," Elena lied smoothly, hating the taste of the falsehood in her mouth. "She didn't say anything to me, Luke. We barely spoke."

"She’s my wife," Luke growled, the possessive fury vibrating through the phone line. "People like the Morgans don't just get divorced because they woke up in a bad mood. Someone put this in her head. Or she’s hiding something."

Elena gripped the edge of her desk, her knuckles turning white. She thought of the medical chart sitting right beside her laptop. She thought of her unborn niece or nephew growing quietly inside Sophia’s womb, completely unknown to the terrifying man on the other end of the line.

If Luke found out Sophia was pregnant while trying to leave him, he wouldn't just contest the divorce. He would cage her. He would use his wealth, his lawyers, and his heavy-handed influence to trap her inside the Morgan estate forever, turning her pregnancy into a gilded prison sentence.

Protect the patient, a voice in Elena’s head whispered. Above all else, protect the patient.

"Luke, listen to me," Elena said, pitching her voice to sound calm, clinical, and firm. "People drift apart. You’ve spent the last three years treating Sophia like a piece of furniture you inherited with the house. You spend your evenings entertaining Vanessa Russell while Sophia sits at home alone. Maybe she just realized she deserves better than being an accessory to the great Luke Morgan."

A lethal, chilling silence followed.

When Luke spoke next, his voice was so quiet it barely registered over the line.

"Watch your tongue, Elena. You’re talking about your brother."

"I’m talking about reality," Elena shot back, her protective instincts for Sophia overriding her fear of him. "If she filed for divorce, accept it like a man and let her go. Don't go tearing the city apart looking for her like some paranoid tyrant."

"A tyrant?" Luke let out a dark, humorless chuckle. "She’s my wife. What's mine stays mine. And if you think I'm going to let some lawyer hand me a set of papers and walk away without a word, you don't know your own brother."

The line went dead.

May you like

The dial tone hummed softly in Elena's ear before cutting off entirely.

She lowered the phone slowly, her hand shaking. She looked down at the medical chart, realizing with a sick dread that the war between Sophia and Luke had only just begun. And she was standing right in the crossfire.
