Chapter 6 - THE RED LEDGER

For a long, suspended moment, nobody moved. Maya lowered the camping lantern slightly, casting sharp, dramatic shadows across her beautiful, exhausted face. Her dark eyes locked onto Charles, filled with a cold, hardened resolve that hadn't been there ten years ago. “Maya,” Laura choked out, fresh tears spilling down her cheeks. Maya looked at her mother. The hardness in her eyes fractured for just a second, replaced by a profound, agonizing sorrow. “I’m sorry, Mom,” Maya whispered. “I’m so sorry I left you.” Charles recovered his shock quickly. He let out a derisive, cruel laugh. “Well, isn't this a touching family reunion,” Charles sneered, straightening his coat. He gestured to the men in the room. “Grab the laptop from the mistress. And grab my ungrateful daughter. We’re leaving.” The two men moved forward, but Maya didn't flinch. She reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a heavy, black object. A flare gun. She pointed it directly at Charles’s chest. “Tell your gorillas to back off, Charles, or I’ll set you on fire right here in your father’s bedroom.” The hired men stopped in their tracks, looking nervously at Charles. A flare gun at point-blank range was a terrifying prospect. “You’re bluffing,” Charles scoffed, though he took a cautious step backward. “You don't have the stomach to pull that trigger, Maya. You’re weak. You always have been. That’s why you gave up your child ten years ago.” “I gave her up to protect Julian’s family from you!” Maya screamed, her hand trembling on the grip of the flare gun. “Because I was twenty years old and terrified! But I’m not twenty anymore. And I’m not afraid of you.” “Where were you tonight, Maya?” Charles mocked, a cruel smile twisting his lips. “Were you down in town trying to hire a car? Too bad I paid off the only mechanic in a thirty-mile radius. You can't run. You can't hide her. The trust requires a blood relative with legal custody to release the funds. Lily is coming with me.” “No, she isn't,” Laura said. She violently jerked her knee backward, catching the hired man holding her square in the groin. The man groaned, his grip instantly loosening. Laura wrenched her arms free, diving across the carpet. She grabbed the heavy cast-iron meat mallet she had dropped and scrambled to her feet, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Rebecca and her daughter. The three women formed a wall between Charles and the bed. “You forged my signature, Charles,” Laura said, her voice lethal and calm. She reached into her coat pocket with her free hand and pulled out the red leather ledger. Charles’s eyes locked onto the book. His confidence shattered entirely. “Arthur’s ledger,” he breathed. “Everything is in here,” Laura said, holding the book up. “The bribes. The offshore accounts. The embezzlement. Rebecca has the forged custody documents on your laptop. Maya has you at gunpoint. It is over, Charles. You have lost.” Charles stared at the red book, his chest heaving. The reality of his situation was finally crashing down upon him. He was cornered. But narcissists don't surrender when they are cornered. They detonate. “You think you’ve won?” Charles laughed, a high, desperate sound. He pointed a trembling finger at Laura. “If you hand that ledger over to the police, I go to prison. Yes. But what do you think happens to Sarah? Sarah committed massive wire fraud to cover her gambling debts before I bailed her out! The proof is in that ledger! If I go down, your sister goes to federal prison for ten years!” Laura’s blood ran cold. Charles saw her hesitation and pounced on it. “And what happens to Lily when her legal guardian is in a federal penitentiary?” Charles smiled, showing all his teeth. “She goes into the foster system, Laura. You can't adopt her. Maya legally surrendered her rights ten years ago. You will never see that child again. I will make sure she is lost in the system forever.” Maya let out a choked sob, the flare gun wavering in her grip. Charles took a slow step forward. “Give me the ledger, Laura. I sign the trust over to my creditors. Sarah stays out of jail. Lily goes back to live a happy little life with her aunt. Everyone walks away.” Laura looked at the red book in her hand. She thought about her sister. Sarah, who had betrayed her trust, who had lied to her for a decade. But Sarah had also raised Lily. Sarah loved that little girl. Could Laura send her own sister to prison just to punish Charles? “Don't do it, Mom.” A small voice echoed from beneath the bed. Lily slowly crawled out from under the oak frame, the heavy wool blanket trailing behind her like a royal cape. She stood up, walking directly over to Laura. She wrapped her small arms around Laura’s leg, pressing her face against her grandmother’s coat. “Aunt Sarah told me to tell you something,” Lily whispered, looking up at Laura with massive, brave brown eyes. “Before she left tonight, she said if you found me, I was supposed to tell you that she was sorry.” Charles rolled his eyes. “How touching. Give me the book, Laura.” “She said she was sorry,” Lily continued, her voice growing stronger, “and that she already called the FBI.” Charles froze. “What?” Laura looked down at her granddaughter, a profound, overwhelming pride blossoming in her chest. Suddenly, the sound of a fourth vehicle tearing up the gravel driveway echoed through the broken window. But this car didn't have normal headlights. Flashing red and blue strobes painted the bedroom walls in a chaotic, dizzying array of color. Sirens wailed, loud and piercing in the quiet mountain air. Charles spun around, running to the window. Three state trooper cruisers and a black SUV had just blocked the driveway, trapping Charles’s hired men inside. “Sarah turned herself in,” Maya said, a fierce, triumphant smile breaking across her face. “She called me two hours ago from the police station in Boston. She handed over her own financial records, Charles. She confessed to everything. Your blackmail leverage is gone.” Charles backed away from the window, his eyes darting frantically around the room. The hired men exchanged panicked looks and bolted for the hallway, abandoning their boss to save themselves. “No!” Charles screamed, grabbing his hair. “No, I just need a week! I can fix this!” He looked at the women standing in front of him. His wife. His mistress. His daughter. They had systematically dismantled his entire empire in a single night. His eyes fell on Lily. The fifty-million-dollar key. Before anyone could react, Charles lunged forward.
