Chapter 8 - THE MORNING SUN OVER RICHMOND

The morning sun broke over the James River, casting a brilliant golden wash across the brick facades and copper spires of downtown Richmond.

Inside the sleek, modern offices of Vance, Sterling & Associates on the twelfth floor, the atmosphere was brisk and purposeful.

Arthur Vance sat behind his polished mahogany desk, reviewing the final draft of the divorce petition and custody agreement, while Audrey sat across from him, dressed in a sharp navy blazer and tailored trousers, holding a steaming cup of dark roast coffee.

The door to the private conference room swung open, and junior associate Kevin stepped inside with a thick stack of overnight courier receipts.

“Mr. Vance,” Kevin said, placing the papers on the edge of the desk. “You’ll be interested to know that Derek Halston didn't even make it through the night at the estate.”

Audrey looked up from her coffee. “What do you mean?”

“At 4:00 AM, the bank’s commercial mortgage division officially exercised their acceleration clause on the Halston Manor property,” Kevin reported, a slight smirk playing at the corners of his mouth. “When Derek refused to vacate the master suite, the county sheriff’s deputies arrived with the writ of possession. They escorted him and his mother off the premises in their bathrobes.”

Arthur chuckled dryly, shaking his head. “A fitting exit for a man who spent twenty years believing his last name was a shield against reality.”

“Where is he now?” Audrey asked quietly.

“Last I heard, he was staying at a budget motel off Route 1,” Kevin replied. “And his partners at Halston & Myers have already called an emergency meeting to vote on stripping him of his senior partnership following the freezing of the firm’s operating accounts.”

Audrey nodded slowly. She didn't feel triumph, nor did she feel pity. She simply felt the clean, crisp neutrality of a chapter closing forever.

“Send the final settlement papers to his motel counsel,” Audrey instructed calmly. “If he signs away all claims to Maisie and agrees to the restraining order by noon today, we won't press criminal charges for the corporate wire transfers he attempted to make yesterday afternoon.”

“Consider it done, Mrs. Vance,” Kevin said, giving a crisp nod before exiting the office.

Arthur leaned back in his leather chair, studying his niece with deep admiration. “You know, Audrey, when you first told me you were marrying that ambitious young lawyer six years ago, I feared you were burying your own brilliance in someone else’s shadow.”

“I was,” Audrey admitted honestly, looking out the floor-to-ceiling window at the sprawling city below. “I let myself believe that supporting someone else meant erasing myself. But I learned my lesson. You can't build a life with a man who views you as furniture.”

“And now?” Arthur asked gently.

May you like

Audrey turned back from the window, a bright, fierce light shining in her eyes.

“Now, I’m building something real,” she said. “Starting with a clean slate and a little girl who will never grow up believing her mother’s voice doesn't matter.”
