Chapter 8 - THE GALA RECEPTION

The grand ballroom of the Palmer House Hilton glittered under thousands of crystal lights, filled with the low murmur of tuxedo-clad politicians, society columnists, and wealthy donors sipping champagne.
At the center dais, standing behind a mahogany podium adorned with the American flag, was Charles Sterling.
He looked every bit the quintessential statesman—silver-haired, impeccably tailored in a midnight-blue suit, his smile polished and radiant as he gestured toward the crowd.
“For too long, Chicago has been held hostage by shadow syndicates and hidden corruption,” Sterling’s voice boomed through the overhead speakers, rich and resonant. “Tonight, I pledge to you that my first act in the United States Senate will be to dismantle the criminal empires that have bled our city dry for generations!”
Polite, thunderous applause rolled across the ballroom.
Standing near the service entrance behind a rolling catering trolley loaded with crystal champagne flutes, I adjusted the cuffs of my black uniform jacket. My heart was hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.
Beside me, dressed in a sharp tuxedo that made him look less like a mafia boss and more like an international diplomat, stood Luca.
“Are you ready?” Luca asked quietly, his dark eyes searching my face.
“As ready as I’ll ever be,” I whispered, taking a deep breath and smoothing down the front of my white apron.
According to our plan, Charles Sterling’s private VIP lounge was located just behind the backstage curtain, where he traditionally retired for ten minutes after his speech to review press statements with his campaign manager.
And tonight, the regular catering staff had been swapped out.
With a slight nod from Luca, I picked up a silver tray holding a single crystal glass of sparkling mineral water and a folded linen napkin, slipping through the heavy velvet curtains toward the VIP green room.
The door to the green room was ajar.
Inside, Charles Sterling was standing by the mirror, adjusting his silk red tie, while his campaign manager paced the floor behind him.
“Brilliant speech, Charles,” the manager was saying. “The D.A.’s office confirmed the Moretti estate seizure warrants are locked in. By Friday, Luca Moretti will be in federal custody, and his real estate empire will be tied up in litigation for a decade.”
Sterling chuckled, a self-satisfied sound that made my stomach turn. “The Morettis were always arrogant fools. They thought they could buy my silence with pocket change back in ninety-two. Now, their empire is going to fund my entire campaign war chest.”
I pushed the door open the rest of the way, stepping smoothly into the room with my eyes lowered in the classic posture of a humble hotel server.
“Excuse me, Senator,” I said, my voice perfectly level. “Compliments of the management. Mineral water with a twist of lemon.”
Sterling didn't even look at my face. He waved a dismissive hand. “Just set it on the desk, girl. And make sure nobody disturbs us for the next five minutes.”
“Of course, Mr. Sterling,” I said.
I walked over to the mahogany desk, placed the silver tray down right beside his leather briefing portfolio, and reached out with my left hand.
Instead of setting the glass down, I popped open the brass clasp of my hidden apron pocket, pulled out the cracked leather ledger, and laid it flat across the center of his briefing papers.
Sterling stopped talking.
He looked down at the old, cracked leather book, his eyes widening in sudden, profound disbelief as he recognized the embossed gold spine and the faded handwriting of Arthur Reed.
“What... what is this?” Sterling gasped, his polished facade cracking in a single heartbeat.
I looked up, meeting his terrified gaze with a cold, steady smile.
“That,” I said clearly, “is the bill coming due.”
Before Sterling could lunge for the book, the heavy oak door of the green room swung wide open behind me.
Flashbulbs popped in rapid, blinding succession.
Standing in the doorway, flanked by four federal marshals and two investigative reporters from the Chicago Tribune, was Luca Moretti.
In his hand, he held a live audio recorder broadcasting straight to the main ballroom’s public address system.

And across the speaker system, echoing clearly for every politician, donor, and journalist in the building to hear, were Charles Sterling’s own words:
“They thought they could buy my silence... Now, their empire is going to fund my entire campaign.”
