Chapter 6 - THE CHILD'S DRAWING

Vanessa threw Dominic’s battered body onto the cold kitchen tiles.

He groaned, clutching his side. His face was bruised, and a deep gash above his eye bled freely, staining his white dress shirt. But his eyes were wide, panicked, locked entirely on Sophie.

“Daddy!” Sophie screamed, trying to run toward him.

One of the tactical guards stepped forward, raising his rifle to block her path. I grabbed Sophie’s arm and yanked her back behind me, shielding her body with my own.

“Don't touch her!” Dominic snarled, trying to push himself up on his elbows. “You won, Vanessa. You have the men. You have the house. Take what you want and leave them alone.”

Vanessa laughed, stepping delicately over the shattered glass of the skylight. “Oh, Dominic. You still think this is just about money and power, don't you?”

She walked toward the refrigerator and casually pulled a child’s drawing out from under a fruit magnet. It was a drawing Sophie had made four years ago, right after her mother’s death. It depicted a stick figure of Isabella sleeping in a building with a large red cross on it, with angels flying above.

Vanessa held the drawing up in the moonlight.

“Sophie was always such a perceptive child,” Vanessa murmured. “She drew this after I came back from the clinic. The 'sleeping hospital,' she called it. I always wondered how she knew. Children hear everything, don't they?”

She crumpled the drawing and dropped it onto Dominic’s chest.

“You ruined my life, Dominic,” Vanessa said, her voice dropping all pretense of sanity. The icy calculation was gone. Only pure, venomous hatred remained. “You don't even remember him, do you? Vincent Morreti. The boss you killed in Chicago twelve years ago to secure your territory.”

Dominic froze. His breathing hitched.

“Vincent Morreti,” Vanessa whispered, stepping closer to him. “My father.”

The revelation hit the room like a physical shockwave.

Vanessa wasn't just a greedy socialite. She wasn't just a power-hungry opportunist. She was a ghost from Dominic’s past, executing a twelve-year plan of absolute vengeance.

“You took my family, Dominic,” Vanessa hissed, her finger tightening on the trigger of her silver gun. “So I took yours. I took your mentor, Paulie. I took your beautiful, naive wife, Isabella. I took your money. And now…” She turned her gun slowly, pointing it directly at Sophie. “…I’m going to take your future.”

“No!” Dominic roared, scrambling to his feet despite his injuries.

“Stop!” I screamed at the top of my lungs.

Vanessa paused, looking at me with mild annoyance.

I reached into my apron pocket. I didn't pull out a weapon. I pulled out the black leather ledger. I held it out over the stainless steel sink, right above the garbage disposal.

“I know the passcode, Vanessa,” I said, my voice trembling but loud enough to command the room.

Vanessa’s eyes locked onto the book. Her vengeance was deep, but her greed was just as powerful. Four billion dollars was her escape ticket. Without it, the other mafia families would hunt her down the moment they realized she had killed Paulie.

“Tell me,” she demanded, aiming the gun at my head.

“Let them go first,” I negotiated, my grip tightening on the book. “Let Dominic, Sophie, and Leo walk out the back door. The moment they are clear of the gates, I’ll give you the number. If you shoot me, or if you try to take the book, I’ll drop it into the disposal and turn it on. You’ll never get the account numbers, and you’ll never guess my father’s cipher.”

Vanessa’s jaw clenched. She weighed her options.

“Let them go,” I repeated firmly.

Dominic stared at me, his eyes filled with a mixture of awe and horror. “Hannah, no. I am not leaving you here with her. I won't let another innocent woman die for my sins.”

“Go, Mr. Caruso,” I pleaded, tears blurring my vision. “Take Sophie. She needs her father.”

Vanessa smirked. She lowered her gun slightly. “How touching. The maid playing the martyr. Fine. Guards, open the back door. Let the king and his little princess walk out into the swamp.”

The guards stepped aside.

Dominic scooped Sophie into his arms. He looked at me, a silent promise burning in his dark eyes. Then, he grabbed the wounded Leo by the collar, helping the massive man to his feet. Slowly, they backed toward the kitchen exit.

“Daddy, what about Hannah?” Sophie cried, reaching out toward me over her father’s shoulder.

“I’ll be right behind you, sweetie,” I lied, giving her a brave smile.

The heavy kitchen door clicked shut behind them. They were outside. They were safe.

Vanessa turned back to me, holding out her hand. “The passcode, Hannah. Now.”

I took a deep breath. I looked at the gold watch still resting on the counter beside me. The green light was blinking faster now.

“06,” I started slowly, dragging out every syllable.

Vanessa typed the numbers into her own phone, accessing the offshore banking app. “Keep going.”

“22.”

“And?” she snapped.

“381.”

Vanessa hit enter. The screen glowed green. A notification popped up.

ACCOUNT UNLOCKED. BALANCE: $4,120,000,000.

A look of pure, euphoric triumph washed over Vanessa’s face. She looked at the screen like it was the face of God.

“Thank you, Hannah,” Vanessa whispered, raising her gun directly between my eyes. “Tell your father I said hello.”

Suddenly, a deafening explosion ripped the kitchen door clean off its hinges.

Flashbang grenades rolled across the tiled floor, detonating in a blinding flash of white light and a roar that shattered my eardrums.

“FBI! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! DROP TO THE GROUND!”

Dozens of armored tactical agents flooded the kitchen, laser sights cutting through the smoke.

Vanessa shrieked, blinded by the flash, and fired her gun wildly into the air.

Before she could take another shot, a massive figure tackled her from the side. It wasn't an FBI agent.

It was Dominic.
