Chapter 2 - THE SILVER POCKET WATCH

The silence in the dining room was absolute, thick and suffocating like a heavy wool blanket. The woman standing beside Vanessa’s father didn't flinch. Her gray eyes, identical to the portraits of the late Don Moretti hanging in the grand hallway, remained fixed on Luca.

Vanessa’s father, Don Bellini, slowly backed away from the stranger as if she were a ghost.

Luca didn’t blink. He walked past Vanessa, past the trembling Italian chef, and stopped two feet from the gray-eyed woman. “My father died ten years ago,” Luca said, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. “He never mentioned a daughter.”

The woman reached into her beaded evening bag. Immediately, three of Luca’s guards placed their hands on their holstered weapons, the leather creaking in the quiet room. She ignored them and pulled out a heavy silver pocket watch. It was tarnished, its chain broken, but the Moretti family crest was unmistakable on the casing.

“He gave this to my mother in Naples,” she said softly. “My name is Sofia. Vanessa found me three months ago. She promised that if I came tonight, she would help me claim my rightful third of the Moretti estate. But she insisted I keep it a secret from you until dessert.”

She pointed at the white almond cake sitting untouched at her place setting.

“A dessert designed to stop my throat from closing, just like Michael’s,” Sofia said. “A convenient tragedy at an engagement party. Two heirs dead. Isabella dead. Leaving only you, Luca. And your new wife.”

A collective gasp echoed around the long table. The influential guests, city politicians, and business partners stared at Vanessa in sheer horror. The narrative of the demanding, high-maintenance fiancée had shattered, revealing a cold-blooded assassin.

“Lies!” Vanessa shrieked, her perfectly manicured hands curling into claws. She lunged toward Sofia, but Luca caught her wrist mid-air. His grip was so tight her knuckles turned white.

“Luca, she’s a grifter!” Vanessa cried, tears of panic finally spilling over her mascara. “Look at her clothes! She’s a street rat trying to steal your fortune! I was just trying to serve a nice dinner!”

“You ordered the almonds, Vanessa,” Luca said, his voice entirely devoid of warmth. “You bypassed my head of security. You lied to the chef.”

“I didn't know about the allergies!” she pleaded.

Luca stared at her. Then he turned to his lead guard. “Lock the doors. Nobody leaves.”

He grabbed Vanessa’s expensive red velvet clutch from the table and dumped its contents onto the pristine white tablecloth. Lipstick, a compact mirror, and a cell phone clattered against the china. But it was the last two items that made the entire room stop breathing.
