Chapter 7 - THE HOTEL CONFRONTATION

The penthouse suite at the downtown luxury hotel was silent when Luca walked in. Two massive guards stood outside the double doors, stepping aside respectfully as he approached.

"She hasn't left the bedroom, Boss," one of them murmured.

Luca nodded and pushed the heavy doors open.

The suite was bathed in the golden light of late afternoon. Vanessa was sitting on the edge of the velvet sofa, still wearing her silk robe, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. When the doors clicked shut, she shot up, her eyes wide with desperate hope.

"Luca," she breathed, rushing toward him. "Luca, please tell me you believe me. Arthur forced me. I never wanted to hurt you."

Luca didn't step back. He let her throw her arms around his neck, let her press her tear-stained face against his chest. He stood perfectly still, a marble statue enduring the embrace of a ghost.

"I went to the storage unit, Vanessa," Luca said, his voice terrifyingly calm.

Vanessa froze against him. She slowly pulled back, searching his face.

"You found the blackmail files?" she whispered. "The proof that Clara is a thief?"

"I found a birth certificate," Luca corrected her softly.

Vanessa’s breath hitched. She took a slow step backward, her perfectly manicured hands trembling. "A... a birth certificate? I don't... I didn't know what was in the cabinet, Luca, I swear."

"Don't lie to me," Luca said, his voice dropping into a lethal register that made the air in the room feel suffocating. "You knew about Sofia. You knew Arthur had been extorting my former wife for four years to feed his gambling habits. And when the money ran out, you two devised a plan to steal my company."

"No!" Vanessa shrieked, backing away until she hit the edge of the glass coffee table. "It was all him! He told me Clara had a secret, but he never said it was a child! I thought it was just financial fraud!"

Luca reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out the forged letter he had taken from Clara’s house. He dropped it onto the coffee table.

"Did Arthur forge my signature on company letterhead too?" Luca asked coldly. "Did Arthur pack the surveillance photos into a box and mail them to Milwaukee this morning?"

Vanessa stared at the crumpled letter. The final shreds of her lie disintegrated, leaving nothing but the ugly, naked truth.

"You don't understand," Vanessa cried, her voice turning shrill and defensive. "You gave me everything, Luca! You gave me the ring, the status, the money! But your men never respected me! They always compared me to Clara! I needed my own power in this family. I needed those shipping shares so your capos would finally bow to me!"

Luca looked at her, absolute disgust radiating from his dark eyes.

"You sent a letter to a mother threatening to steal her child by force," Luca said, his voice vibrating with a quiet, violent fury. "You used my name to terrorize the woman who gave birth to my daughter."

Vanessa sobbed, sinking to her knees on the plush carpet. "I just wanted you to see that she wasn't perfect! I wanted you to hate her!"

"I don't hate her," Luca whispered. "I hate myself for letting a parasite like you into my home."

He walked over to the desk in the corner of the room, picked up a pen, and pulled a legal document from his briefcase. He dropped it onto the glass table in front of her.

"What is this?" Vanessa sniffled, looking down at the dense legal text.

"It is a full confession," Luca said smoothly. "Admitting to corporate espionage, forgery, and conspiracy to commit extortion against Clara Moretti. It also legally waives any claim to my assets, my properties, and my name."

Vanessa looked up in horror. "If I sign this, I go to prison! Extortion is a federal crime!"

"If you don't sign it," Luca replied, leaning down so his face was inches from hers, "you don't go to prison. You go back to the warehouse with Arthur. And you can explain to my capos why you tried to steal from the family."

Vanessa swallowed a scream. She looked at the document, then at the pen. Her hands shook violently as she picked it up. She scratched her signature across the bottom line, tears ruining the ink.

Luca snatched the paper back, inspecting the signature.

"Get up," he ordered.

Vanessa stumbled to her feet, wiping her face. "Are you calling the police?"

"No," Luca said, turning toward the door. "I am going to do exactly what you wanted. I am going to proceed with the wedding rehearsal tonight."

Vanessa blinked, profound confusion cutting through her terror. "What? The rehearsal? But... you just made me sign a confession."

"The top tier of the Chicago syndicate will be at the rehearsal dinner tonight," Luca explained, a dark, humorless smile touching the corner of his mouth. "Your father’s creditors will be there. My capos will be there. And I want them all to see exactly what happens to people who try to steal from me."

He opened the heavy double doors.

"Put on a nice dress, Vanessa. You have a party to attend."

Back at the Moretti estate, I was pacing the floor of a luxurious guest suite on the top floor. The room was larger than my entire apartment. Daniel had sent a team to pack up my small staff quarters, and my few belongings were neatly arranged in the massive walk-in closet.

I gently touched my bruised cheek. The swelling had gone down slightly, but it was still a deep, angry purple.

A soft knock on the door made me jump.

"Come in," I called out.

The door opened, and Luca stepped inside. He looked exhausted, the adrenaline of the day finally beginning to wear off.

"How is Clara?" I asked immediately. "And Sofia?"

"Safe," Luca said, a genuine warmth returning to his eyes at the mention of his daughter. "They are secure. But tonight, I have to finish cleaning house."

He walked over to a small sitting area and gestured for me to sit. I took the armchair opposite him.

"The rehearsal dinner is in three hours," Luca said. "Vanessa will be there. I am going to expose her and Arthur in front of the entire commission. Once they are disgraced, I will hand the confession over to the feds, and the Bellini name will be erased from Chicago."

"Why are you telling me this?" I asked, my hands gripping the armrests.

"Because I need you in the room, Olivia," Luca said softly.

I froze. "Me? But I'm just a maid. If the entire mafia commission is there..."

"You are not a maid anymore," Luca interrupted, his tone leaving no room for argument. "You are the woman who uncovered a conspiracy that saved my daughter's life. You are the only innocent witness to what Vanessa did in that guest room. I want them to see the bruise on your face. I want them to know that Vanessa didn't just steal from me—she assaulted someone under my protection."

I swallowed hard, the fear twisting in my stomach. But I looked at Luca, remembering the way he had dropped to one knee to speak to a little girl he didn't even know was his.

May you like

"Okay," I whispered. "I'll do it."

Luca nodded, standing up. "Daniel sent a dress for you. Be ready at seven."
