Chapter 5 - THE GREENHOUSE TUNNEL

The night air was freezing as we sprinted across the manicured lawns toward the greenhouse. Luca didn't wait for Marco’s backup; he moved with the desperate, terrifying speed of a father who had just discovered he had a child, only to realize he might lose her in the same breath.

I struggled to keep up, clutching my injured left hand against my chest. The pain was a constant, sharp rhythm, but the adrenaline pumping through my veins pushed it to the background.

The greenhouse was a massive structure of glass and wrought iron, glowing faintly under the moonlight. As we approached the heavy wooden doors, Luca held up a hand, signaling me to stop.

He didn't speak. He just pointed to the damp earth near the entrance.

Fresh footprints. A woman’s bare feet, sinking into the mud. Vanessa had abandoned her heels on the terrace to run faster.

Luca gripped his pistol with both hands, kicking the greenhouse door open.

Warm, humid air smelling of orchids and wet soil rushed out. The glass structure was vast, filled with towering exotic plants and rows of heavy clay pots. It was perfectly silent, save for the rhythmic dripping of the irrigation system.

"Stay behind me, Anna," Luca breathed, stepping into the humid darkness.

We moved down the central aisle, the moonlight casting long, eerie shadows across the foliage. The entrance to the old groundskeeper's tunnel was hidden beneath a heavy metal grate at the far end of the building, near the potting station.

As we rounded a massive fern, a shadow moved near the grate.

"Stop!" Luca roared, raising his weapon.

The figure froze. It wasn't Vanessa.

It was a man, dressed in a dark suit, struggling to lift the heavy, rusted metal grate. He turned around, raising his hands, squinting against the beam of Luca’s tactical flashlight.

"Don't shoot!" the man gasped, dropping a heavy iron crowbar.

Luca didn't lower the gun. "Who the hell are you?"

"My name is David," the man said, his voice shaking violently. He looked terrified, completely out of place in the muddy greenhouse. "David Whitmore."

My breath caught. Mrs. Whitmore’s son. The man Vanessa had married to cover her tracks. The man who had raised Luca’s daughter for seven years.

"Where is she?" Luca demanded, stepping forward, the gun leveled squarely at David’s chest. "Where is Vanessa?"

"I don't know!" David cried, taking a step back until he hit a wooden potting table. "I got a text from her ten minutes ago. She said her plan failed. She said I had to meet her at the tunnel entrance and bring the girl, or she would send your men to kill my mother."

"You brought the child here?" Luca’s voice cracked, the lethal calm shattering. "To my estate?"

"I left her in the car outside the service gates!" David pleaded. "I swear to God, I just came in to get my mother out. Vanessa told me to use the tunnel!"

Luca grabbed David by the collar of his suit, slamming him against the metal frame of the greenhouse. "You kept my daughter from me for seven years. You helped that monster fake a marriage, and you let her blackmail my dead wife. Give me one reason I shouldn't put a bullet in your head right now."

David didn't fight back. Tears streamed down his face. "Because I love her! I raised Lily like she was my own flesh and blood! Caroline begged me to take her because she said you were a monster! She said your world would destroy her!"

Luca froze. The words hit him harder than a physical blow. Caroline, his beautiful, terrified wife, had believed he was the danger.

Before Luca could respond, a cold, sharp laugh echoed through the humid air of the greenhouse.

"How touching."

We all turned toward the sound.

Vanessa stepped out from behind a row of towering palms. She looked like a nightmare. Her expensive red silk gown was torn and stained with mud, her hair a wild, tangled mess. In her right hand, she held a small, suppressed silver pistol.

But it was what she was holding in her left hand that made the blood freeze in my veins.

She was holding the hand of a little girl.

The child looked to be about nine years old, wearing a pink winter coat over pajamas. She had dark hair, just like Luca, and wide, terrified gray eyes.

"Lily!" David screamed, lunging forward.

Thwip.

Vanessa fired the suppressed pistol without hesitation. The bullet struck David in the leg. He collapsed onto the damp earth with a cry of agony, clutching his thigh.

"Daddy!" the little girl shrieked, trying to pull away from Vanessa.

Vanessa jerked her back violently, pressing the barrel of the pistol against the child’s temple. "Shut up, you little brat."

Luca didn't move. He didn't breathe. He stared at the little girl, his hands shaking so violently I thought he might drop his weapon. For the first time in his life, he was looking at his daughter.

"Vanessa," Luca said, his voice a hoarse, desperate whisper. "Let her go. You want money? I have millions. You want safe passage out of the country? I’ll give you my private jet. Just let the girl walk over to me."

"I don't want your money, Luca," Vanessa sneered, her eyes wide and manic. "I want you to hurt. I spent seven years playing the perfect, submissive girlfriend. I endured your coldness, your arrogance, your obsession with a dead woman. I did everything right to secure this empire, and you threw it all away for a stupid, clumsy housemaid!"

She glared at me, pure venom in her eyes. "If she hadn't cut her hand in the pantry, none of this would have happened. Your mother-in-law would have kept her mouth shut, and I would be your wife by Saturday."

"You poisoned my wife," Luca stated, his voice devoid of emotion, though his eyes never left the little girl.

"Caroline was weak!" Vanessa spat. "She had all this power, all this money, and she wanted to give it away to charity! She wanted to leave you! I just helped her out the door."

"Let Lily go," David groaned from the floor, blood pooling around his leg. "She’s innocent, Vanessa. Please."

"Nobody is innocent!" Vanessa screamed, her finger tightening on the trigger.

I looked at the little girl. Lily was crying silently, her small shoulders shaking, staring at David bleeding on the floor.

I couldn't let this happen. I had spent my entire life keeping my head down, taking orders, cleaning up messes. But the mess in this greenhouse wasn't dirt or spilled wine. It was evil.

I didn't have a gun. I only had my injured hand and the heavy linen bandage wrapped around it.

I looked at the heavy clay pot resting on the metal shelf just two feet to my right. It contained a massive, spiky agave plant.

I caught Luca’s eye. He was focused entirely on Vanessa, but in his peripheral vision, he saw my slight movement. He gave me an imperceptible nod.

"Vanessa," Luca said, taking a slow step forward, raising his empty left hand in a gesture of surrender. "Look at me. It’s just you and me now. The maid doesn't matter."

"Don't take another step!" Vanessa warned, pressing the gun harder against Lily’s head.

"I'm putting my gun down," Luca said softly. He slowly lowered his right hand, bending at the knees to place his weapon on the damp earth.

Vanessa’s eyes tracked the movement. For one critical second, her focus shifted downward.

I didn't hesitate. I grabbed the heavy clay pot with my uninjured right hand and shoved it off the metal shelf with every ounce of strength I had.

The heavy pot plummeted downward, crashing squarely onto Vanessa’s shoulder.

She shrieked in pain, her arm buckling under the weight of the clay and soil. The silver pistol slipped from her grasp, discharging wildly into the glass ceiling above us.

Lily tore her hand free and ran toward David, sobbing.

Vanessa, fueled by pure, desperate rage, lunged forward to grab the gun from the mud.

But Luca was faster.

He didn't pick up his gun. He crossed the distance between them in a split second, grabbing Vanessa by the throat with his bare hands. He lifted her completely off her feet, his eyes burning with the wrath of a father who had just saved his child.

Vanessa clawed at his hands, choking, her legs kicking wildly in the air.

"You took my wife," Luca whispered, his voice vibrating with lethal intent. "You stole my daughter. You tried to destroy my life."

"Luca, stop!" I yelled, stepping forward. "She’s not worth it! Don't do this in front of your daughter!"

Luca froze. He looked past Vanessa, struggling in his grip, and saw Lily kneeling beside David, watching him with wide, terrified eyes.

The words David had spoken earlier echoed in the silent greenhouse.

She said you were a monster. She said your world would destroy her.

Luca slowly lowered Vanessa to the ground. He didn't let go of her throat, but he allowed her to breathe. She gasped for air, coughing violently, falling to her knees in the mud.

"Marco!" Luca roared.

The greenhouse doors burst open, and Marco sprinted in with three armed guards. They took one look at the scene and immediately hauled Vanessa to her feet, slapping heavy zip-ties around her wrists.

"Take her to the basement," Luca ordered, his voice cold and final. "And call Dr. Harris. Tell him to bring a surgical kit for Mr. Whitmore."

Marco nodded, dragging a sobbing, defeated Vanessa out into the night.

Luca stood in the center of the greenhouse, breathing heavily. He looked down at the mud, then slowly turned toward Lily.

The little girl was clinging to David’s arm, crying softly. She looked terrified of the tall, dark-haired man in the ruined suit.

Luca didn't approach her. He fell to his knees in the damp earth, keeping his distance, showing her he wasn't a threat.

"Lily," Luca said softly, tears finally breaking through his composed facade, spilling down his cheeks. "My name is Luca. I'm... I'm your father."

Lily sniffled, looking from David to Luca. She didn't say a word. She just buried her face in David’s shoulder.

Luca closed his eyes, the pain on his face more agonizing than any physical wound. He had won the war, but he had lost the one thing he had fought for before he even knew she existed.

I walked over and knelt beside him, placing my uninjured hand on his shoulder.

"Give her time, Mr. Moretti," I whispered. "She just got her life back. She needs to know it’s safe before she can share it."

Luca opened his eyes, looking at my bloodstained uniform and the heavy bandage on my left hand. He reached out and gently covered my hand with his.

"You gave her back to me, Anna," Luca said, his voice thick with emotion. "I will never forget that."

May you like

As we sat there in the quiet, damp greenhouse, listening to the distant wail of police sirens approaching the estate, I realized that the life I had known—the quiet, invisible housemaid—was gone forever.

And for the first time in a long time, I wasn't afraid of what came next.
