Chapter 8 - THE TRUTH UNVEILED

The estate was warm, quiet, and secure.
It had been four hours since the nightmare at the pier. Celine and Matteo were both in federal custody, handed over with enough evidence from the ruined garage to guarantee they would never see the outside of a cell again.
Lucy was fast asleep in my bed. I had drawn her a warm bath, dressed her in dry pajamas, and held her until the trembling stopped. She hadn't let go of my hand since we got out of the water.
I sat on the edge of the bed, wearing one of Dante’s oversized sweaters, my hair still damp.
I held the small velvet box in my hand, tracing the elegant diamond band with my thumb.
The door opened softly.
Dante stepped inside. He had showered and changed into comfortable clothes, but the exhaustion was evident in the deep lines around his eyes.
He walked over to the bed, looking down at his sleeping daughter with absolute devotion.
Then he looked at me. He saw the open velvet box in my hand.
He didn't look away, nor did he offer a slick excuse. He sat down gently on the edge of the mattress beside me.
“I bought that ring three months ago,” Dante confessed, his voice barely above a whisper.
I looked at him in shock. “But… you were engaged to Celine.”
“I was engaged to a business arrangement,” Dante corrected, rubbing his jaw. “An arrangement I thought would secure my family’s position. But every time I looked at her, I knew it was wrong. Every time she spoke to Lucy, I wanted to throw her out.”
He reached out, his warm fingers gently tracing my cheek.
“And every time I saw you read to my daughter, every time I saw how fiercely you protected her, I knew I was making the biggest mistake of my life.”
My heart hammered in my chest. For two years, I had loved this man from the shadows. I had loved his daughter as if she were my own. But I was the nanny. I was the help.
“Dante, I—”
“Elena didn't want to leave because she hated me, Mara,” Dante interrupted gently. “I found the rest of the ledger in the garage. She was gathering evidence to dismantle the violent side of the syndicate. She wanted me to go entirely legitimate. For Lucy’s sake.”
He took a deep breath.
“And I am. I’m stepping down as head of the family tomorrow. The shipping ports will go legitimate. The violence ends tonight.”
He looked at the velvet box in my hand.
“I wanted to ask you to stay, Mara. Not as an employee. But as my partner. As the woman I love.”
Tears welled in my eyes, spilling over onto my cheeks.
I didn't answer with words. I leaned forward, closing the distance between us, and pressed my lips to his.
Dante’s arms wrapped around me instantly, pulling me against his chest, kissing me with a desperate, overwhelming passion that erased the trauma of the night entirely.
When we finally pulled away, resting our foreheads together, a small, sleepy voice broke the silence.
“Are you staying, Mara?”
We turned. Lucy was sitting up in bed, rubbing her eyes, clutching her favorite stuffed bear.

I smiled, wiping my tears, and moved onto the bed to pull her into my arms.
“I’m staying, sweetheart,” I promised, kissing the top of her head. “I’m never going anywhere ever again.”
