Chapter 2 - THE WEIGHT OF A BROKEN VOW

The silence inside the grand dining room was heavy enough to suffocate. Fifty pairs of eyes flicked from Daniel, whose face had gone bloodless, to Vanessa, who was gripping the edge of the mahogany table so tightly her knuckles had turned paper-white.
I stood a few feet away, still shivering slightly from the cold red wine dripping from the ends of my hair onto the stiff white fabric of my collar. My mother’s rent was due on Monday, and fifty minutes ago, I had chosen my integrity over a paycheck. Now, standing under the chandelier light of the Moretti mansion, I realized the storm we had just stepped into went far deeper than a stolen eighty-thousand-dollar diamond necklace.
Luca Moretti did not yell. That was the most terrifying thing about him.
In the Chicago underworld, men raised their voices when they lost control. Luca simply took two slow, measured steps toward Daniel. His tattooed fingers straightened the cuffs of his black suit jacket with chilling precision.
“Repeat that,” Luca said. His voice was a low rumble that vibrated through the floorboards.
Daniel swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing violently. He looked around the room as if searching for an exit, but two of Luca's senior guards had already quietly moved to block the double oak doors.
“You heard me, Luca,” Daniel stammered, his bravado completely evaporated. “Vanessa didn't just want Sofia out of the picture for tonight. She wanted her gone for good. She said once you and she were married, your bloodline would be clean. No messy ties to Sofia's kids. No reminders of the old neighborhood.”
Sofia let out a sharp, choked sob. She clutched her chest, her fingers tangling in the fabric of her simple navy blue dress—a dress she had clearly agonized over choosing for an evening meant to reconnect with her estranged brother.
“My children?” Sofia whispered, her voice cracking with a maternal terror that instantly cut through the room. “What does Vanessa have to do with my children?”
Vanessa finally found her voice, her tone shifting from panic to a sharp, defensive venom as she pushed herself away from the table.
“He’s lying!” Vanessa shrieked, pointing a trembling finger at Daniel. “They’re both lying! This is a setup! That wretched girl in the maid's uniform and your pathetic, loser brother-in-law conspired to humiliate me because I’m about to become mistress of this house!”
She turned her tear-streaked, furious face toward Luca, expecting him to pull her into his arms as he always did.
Instead, Luca stopped three feet away from her. He didn't touch her. He didn't even blink.
“Emily,” Luca said, his dark eyes shifting from his fiancée back to me.
“Yes, sir?” I answered, my heart hammering against my ribs.
“You mentioned hearing Daniel say something else before he took the necklace.” Luca's gaze was razor-sharp, missing nothing. “What else did he say about Sofia’s children?”
The room seemed to hold its collective breath. Fifty high-society guests, business associates, and local dignitaries sat paralyzed in their velvet chairs, too stunned to even whisper.
I swallowed the lump in my throat. My hands were shaking at my sides, the red wine now cold against my skin.
“When Mrs. Bellini handed him the necklace in the upstairs hallway at six-fifteen,” I said clearly, ensuring every person at the table heard every word, “Mr. Daniel looked at it and then looked at her. He said... he said, 'Once Luca finds out what happened to Sofia's children, he'll never forgive either of us.'”
Sofia gasped, a sound so full of pain it made my stomach turn. She surged out of her chair, running straight toward Daniel.
“What did you do to my babies?” Sofia screamed, grabbing the lapels of Daniel’s gray suit and shaking him with a desperation only a mother could possess. “Where are Leo and Mia? Who has my children?!”
Daniel flinched, trying to pry her hands away. “I didn't touch them! It was Vanessa's idea! She said if we used the custody debt against you, you’d sign away your parental rights by next week!”
Vanessa lunged across the table like a cornered cat, her fingernails clawing toward Daniel's face. “Shut up! Shut your filthy mouth, Daniel! You coward!”
Before Vanessa's nails could scratch him, Luca’s hand shot out. He caught Vanessa’s wrist mid-air with an iron grip. The movement was so fast it was almost invisible.
Vanessa froze, gasping in pain as Luca’s fingers clamped down.
“Look at me, Vanessa,” Luca commanded, his voice dangerously soft.
She whimpered, her elaborately styled blonde hair shaking as she tried to pull her arm back. “Luca... you’re hurting me. Please. It’s a lie. I love you.”
“You love the name,” Luca corrected, every syllable cold as ice. He turned his head toward his head of security, standing by the door. “Marco. Take our guests to the east parlor. Open the bar. Nobody leaves the estate.”
“Yes, Mr. Moretti,” Marco responded instantly.
Within two minutes, the fifty dinner guests had scrambled out of the room in terrified silence, whispering among themselves, leaving only Luca, Sofia, Daniel, Vanessa, and me standing amid the wreckage of a ruined engagement dinner.
Sofia was shaking uncontrollably, tears streaming down her face as she looked at her brother. “Luca... my children haven't answered my FaceTime calls since this afternoon. Their babysitter texted me saying two men in suits picked them up from school because of an 'emergency family relocation.' I thought... I thought it was you protecting them.”
Luca’s expression didn't just darken; it turned lethal. The air in the room dropped ten degrees. He slowly released Vanessa’s wrist, and she stumbled backward against the banquet table, knocking a silver candlestick to the floor with a loud clang.
“Marco,” Luca called out again without breaking eye contact with Vanessa.
“Boss?”
“Find Leo and Mia. Bring them to my private study within twenty minutes. If a single hair on their heads is harmed, burn the entire city down until you find who authorized it.”
“Right away, sir.”
Sofia collapsed back into her chair, burying her face in her hands. I instinctively took a step toward her, forgetting for a second that I was just the maid whose uniform was ruined with cheap red wine.
Luca turned to me. The raw fury in his eyes softened just a fraction as he looked at my soaked collar and bruised expression.
“Emily,” he said quietly.
“Yes, Mr. Moretti?”
“Go to the second-floor master suite. In the walk-in closet, there is a locked steel safe behind the sliding mirror. The combination is Sofia’s birthday.”
I blinked, stunned. “Sir?”
“Open it,” Luca ordered, his gaze shifting back to the trembling woman who had worn a ring bought with his family’s blood. “Bring me whatever ledger, documents, or personal items you find inside belonging to my sister or my nephews. Let’s see what else my future wife has been keeping in my own house.”

Vanessa’s face turned the color of ash. She let out a high-pitched, hysterical laugh. “You can’t do this, Luca! You’re tearing our lives apart over a hysterical sister and a lying maid!”
Luca didn't even look at her as I turned and hurried toward the grand staircase, leaving the echoes of their shattered lives behind me.
