Chapter 6 - THE FINAL BETRAYAL

The dark metal barrel of the Beretta gleamed menacingly under the foyer chandelier.

Luca scrambled up from the marble floor with terrifying speed, his protective instincts overriding his grief. “Evelyn, put the gun down. Right now. This doesn't concern you.”

“Doesn't concern me?” Evelyn let out a shrill, manic laugh, her eyes wild and unhinged. “You humiliated me in front of Chicago’s elite yesterday! You abandoned our marriage bed, you screamed about another woman’s children, and now you’re standing here begging your ex-wife to take you back while I’m supposed to just pack my bags and fade into the background?”

“Evelyn, I never loved you, and you know it,” Luca said, his voice dropping into a lethal, low register as he slowly edged closer to her, trying to bridge the distance. “Lower the gun before you do something you can't take back.”

“Don't you dare take another step, Luca!” Evelyn shrieked, cocking the hammer of the pistol. The metallic click echoed loudly in the cavernous hallway. She shifted the barrel slightly, aiming directly at my heart. “She took everything from me! My social standing, my future, my marriage! If I can't have you, Moretti, then nobody will.”

My heart hammered against my ribs, but years of living on the edge of the syndicate world had taught me one vital lesson: panic gets you killed. I kept my breathing steady, my eyes locked on Evelyn’s trembling finger resting on the trigger.

“Evelyn, killing me won't make Luca love you,” I said, my voice remarkably calm. “It will only ensure that he spends the rest of his life making sure you rot in a maximum-security prison.”

“Shut up! Just shut up!” Evelyn sobbed, tears streaming down her face, her grip on the weapon shaking violently. “I gave up everything for you, Luca! My father’s connections, my reputation! And you threw me away like garbage the second you saw those brats!”

Luca used her momentary distraction. With lightning-fast reflexes born of a lifetime in the violent underworld, he lunged forward.

Bang!

A deafening gunshot shattered the silence, chipping the marble pillar inches from my shoulder.

Before Evelyn could pull the trigger a second time, Luca slammed his forearm into her wrist. The Beretta flew from her hand, clattering loudly across the tiled floor. Luca grabbed her by the shoulders, shoving her hard against the wall, pinning her there with a terrifying, suffocating grip.

“If you ever—ever—point a weapon at her again,” Luca snarled, his voice vibrating with absolute murder, “I won't let the police touch you. I’ll handle you myself.”

Evelyn gasped for air, her face turning pale as she stared into the eyes of a true monster unleashed.

Just then, the heavy front doors burst open.

Marcus rushed into the foyer, a heavy iron fireplace poker gripped in his right hand, his eyes scanning the room in wild panic. “Nia! Are you alright? I heard a shot!”

He stopped dead when he saw Luca pinning Evelyn against the wall and the gun lying smoking on the floor. Marcus instantly stepped between Luca and me, pulling me behind him, raising the poker defensively.

“Stay back, Moretti,” Marcus warned, his voice steel.

Luca slowly released Evelyn, who slumped to the floor in a weeping heap. Luca didn't look at her. He didn't look at Marcus. His dark, tortured eyes were fixed solely on me, standing safely behind my husband’s back.

“Nia...” Luca whispered, his voice cracking with a final, desperate plea. “Is this really how it ends? Do I lose everything?”

I looked at the man who had caused me so much pain, but for the first time in years, I didn't feel anger. I didn't feel hatred. I felt only a profound, liberating emptiness.

“You didn't lose everything because of me, Luca,” I said softly, resting my hand on Marcus’s shoulder. “You lost it because of the secrets you let destroy your life. My children have a father. My life has peace. And you... you have your empire.”

I turned toward the door, pulling Marcus with me.

“Let’s go home, Marcus.”

As we walked out into the cool, cleansing rain, leaving the Moretti estate behind us forever, I knew the ghosts of the past had finally been laid to rest.
