Chapter 6 - THE RAID AND THE ROSE

"FBI! Open the door!" The muffled shout from outside sent a fresh wave of panic through the dining room. Forty high-society guests began screaming again, surging toward the back of the room, desperate to distance themselves from the mafia boss. "Stay calm!" Luca roared over the chaos. He looked at his security guards. "Do not draw your weapons on federal agents. Open the doors." "Luca, they're going to arrest you," Vanessa cried, clutching her mother's arm. "Let them try," Luca said, his face a mask of iron. The heavy oak doors were thrown open. A dozen heavily armed FBI agents poured into the foyer, their tactical flashlights cutting through the dim light of the mansion. "Nobody move! Keep your hands where we can see them!" the lead agent shouted, stepping into the dining room. He was a tall man with a graying mustache and cold, calculating eyes. Agent Miller. Miller’s eyes swept the room, taking in the terrified guests, the overturned chairs, and finally settling on Luca, who was still kneeling over a bleeding Marcus. "Step away from him, Moretti," Agent Miller ordered, his hand resting on his holstered weapon. Luca calmly stood up, raising his hands slowly. Marcus groaned, rolling onto his side. "Help me," Marcus wheezed, playing the victim perfectly. "He tried to kill me, Miller. He found out I was going to testify against him." Agent Miller smirked. "Is that right?" He gestured to two agents. "Cuff Moretti." "Wait!" I shouted, stepping forward again. Agent Miller glared at me. "Back off, miss." "You don't understand," I pleaded, pointing at Marcus. "He's the one who arranged the murder of Luca's mother! He ran over Vanessa's father! He just confessed to all of it!" Miller laughed dryly. "We don't care about twenty-year-old cold cases, sweetheart. We care about the RICO charges we're going to hit Moretti with tonight. We received an anonymous tip that the master ledger is hidden in this house." My stomach dropped. Marcus hadn't sent his brother to the hospital to take the ledger to the FBI. He had sent his brother to the hospital to retrieve a fake ledger. The real one was here. In the mansion. "You're searching the house?" Luca asked, his eyes narrowing. "We already have a warrant," Miller said, holding up a piece of paper. "And my source was very specific about where to look." Miller pointed to the massive stone fireplace at the end of the dining room. "Check the loose brick behind the fire grate," Miller ordered his men. Marcus smiled a bloody, triumphant smile from the floor. Two agents rushed to the fireplace. They swept the cold ashes aside and pulled at the back bricks. One of them slid out easily. The agent reached into the dark cavity and pulled out a thick, black leather-bound book. The real ledger. Marcus had planted it in Luca's own dining room. "Well, well, well," Agent Miller said, taking the book. "Looks like you're going away for a long time, Luca." Luca stared at the book. For the first time, he looked truly defeated. The reversal was brutal. Marcus had orchestrated a flawless frame-up, using the engagement dinner as the perfect distraction. "Take him away," Miller ordered. As the agents grabbed Luca's arms, Lily suddenly broke free from my grasp. She ran across the room and stood directly in front of Agent Miller. "That's not his book!" the little girl yelled, her voice echoing in the silent room. Miller looked down at her, annoyed. "Move aside, kid." "I said it's not his!" Lily insisted, pointing a small finger at Marcus. "It's Daddy's! He made Mommy hide it there this afternoon before the party!" Vanessa froze. Agent Miller frowned. "What did you say?" Lily reached into the pocket of her red coat. "Daddy told Mommy to put the book in the fireplace. I saw them. He said it was a secret present. But Mommy was scared, so she gave me this to hold." Lily pulled out a small, dried white rose. She held it up to the FBI agent. "Mommy said if Daddy ever tried to hurt us, I had to show this flower to the police." Agent Miller looked at the dried rose. Then he looked at Vanessa. "Mrs. Bellini," Miller said slowly. "Would you care to explain what your daughter is talking about?" Vanessa stepped forward, her hands shaking, but her head held high. "That rose," Vanessa said, her voice steadying, "was taken from the floral arrangement at Marcus’s offshore bank in the Caymans. Inside the stem is a micro-SD card." Marcus’s face went completely, deathly pale. The answer: Vanessa had secretly gathered her own insurance policy against Marcus. The open question: What exactly was on that micro-SD card? "What's on the drive, Mrs. Bellini?" Miller asked. Vanessa looked Marcus dead in the eye. "Audio recordings," she said. "Four years of Marcus Thorne detailing exactly how he was embezzling from the Moretti family, how he paid off federal judges, and how he planned to frame Luca tonight." She turned to Agent Miller. "If you arrest Luca based on that planted ledger, the recordings go to the press tomorrow morning, and every dirty judge on Marcus’s payroll gets exposed."
