Chapter 7 - THE WINE GLASS

Marco didn't hesitate.

As Dante flinched toward the shattering sound of the candelabra hitting the glass, Marco dropped his entire body weight backward. He slammed his elbow violently into Dante’s ribs, a brutal, practiced strike that drove the air from the extortionist’s lungs.

Dante grunted in pain, his finger pulling the trigger reflexively.

The gunshot deafened the room.

The muzzle flash illuminated the dining room in a brilliant, terrifying strobe of white light. The bullet shattered the massive crystal chandelier hanging directly above the table. Thousands of glass shards rained down like diamond hail, crashing onto the china and the dark wood.

Screams erupted from the guests. They dove under the heavy oak table, covering their heads.

Marco spun around, grabbing Dante’s gun wrist with both hands. He twisted hard, using Dante’s own momentum against him, and drove his knee into Dante’s stomach. The heavy handgun clattered to the marble floor, sliding away into the darkness.

Dante stumbled backward, clutching his ribs, his silver lighter tumbling from his grip and clinking harmlessly onto the carpet.

The room was plunged back into near-total darkness, save for the faint moonlight bleeding through the windows.

“Get the guns!” Luca roared to his men.

The sound of scrambling filled the room. Luca’s security team dove for the weapons they had surrendered on the table moments earlier.

But Dante wasn't finished.

He let out a guttural roar, reaching into his tailored suit jacket. The moonlight caught the gleam of a long, serrated hunting knife as he pulled it free.

He didn't lunge for Marco.

He lunged directly for Luca.

“If I don't get the ring, I take the bounty on your head!” Dante screamed, slashing the blade horizontally toward Luca’s throat.

Luca leaned back, barely dodging the lethal arc of the blade. The tip of the knife sliced through the expensive fabric of Luca’s suit jacket, grazing his shoulder.

I was standing three feet away. I didn't have a weapon. I didn't have training.

But I had the heavy crystal wine decanter.

I grabbed the thick glass neck of the decanter from the table. As Dante pulled his arm back for a second, fatal thrust, I swung the heavy crystal vessel with both hands, smashing it directly into the side of Dante’s head.

The decanter shattered on impact. Dark red vintage wine exploded outward, showering Dante’s face and suit like blood.

Dante let out a cry of pain and stumbled sideways, completely disoriented, clutching his bleeding temple.

Before he could recover, three of Luca’s men hit him at full speed. They tackled Dante to the marble floor, driving their knees into his spine and pinning his arms behind his back. The heavy click of steel handcuffs echoed in the dark.

The threat was neutralized.

The heavy, ragged breathing of thirty terrified people filled the silent room.

“Lights,” Luca gasped, clutching his bleeding shoulder.

Seconds later, the massive emergency generators in the basement finally kicked on. A low hum vibrated through the floorboards, and the auxiliary wall sconces flickered to life, casting a dim, yellow glow across the destroyed dining room.

The scene was absolute carnage. Shards of crystal covered the table. Wine pooled on the marble floor like a gruesome crime scene. Dante lay pinned, bleeding and cursing through his teeth.

And standing completely still at the far end of the room, her back pressed against the mahogany doors, was Vanessa.

She looked at Dante on the floor. She looked at Luca holding his bleeding shoulder.

And she knew she had lost.

“Luca,” Vanessa whispered, her voice trembling with absolute terror. She took a step forward, her hands raised in supplication. “Luca, please. Listen to me. He forced me. I didn't want any of this. I was scared. They threatened to kill my family if I didn't help them steal the ring.”

She was playing the victim. She was trying to spin the final reversal.

Luca stood up straight. He ignored his bleeding shoulder. He walked slowly around the destroyed table, his dark shoes crunching on broken glass, until he stood inches away from the woman he had almost married.

“You didn't want any of this?” Luca asked, his voice dangerously soft.

“No!” Vanessa wept, tears streaming down her perfect face. “I love you, Luca! I would never hurt you! They made me forge the catering contract! They made me leave the door open! I swear to God, I am a victim here!”

Luca stared at her. His face was a mask of cold, unyielding stone.

He didn't argue with her. He didn't yell.

He simply turned around and looked at me.

“Emma,” Luca said.

I stepped forward, stepping carefully over the broken glass.

“Give me the velvet box,” Luca commanded.

Vanessa’s sobbing stopped instantly. Her eyes widened in horror.

I reached into the deep pocket of my housekeeping dress and pulled out the small, black velvet box. I handed it to Luca.

Luca turned back to Vanessa.

“You say Dante forced you to steal the engagement ring,” Luca said, holding the box up in the dim light.

“Yes!” Vanessa nodded frantically. “He made me put it in the safe! He was going to take it tonight!”

Luca clicked the velvet box open.

He held it out so Vanessa could see inside.

Vanessa looked at the white silk cushion.

She looked at the small, clear glass vial filled with amber liquid.

All the color completely drained from her face. Her jaw went slack. Her knees buckled slightly, but she caught herself against the doorframe.

“If Dante was only here for a diamond ring,” Luca said, his voice dropping to a terrifying, lethal whisper. “Then why did you hide a lethal, untraceable cardiac accelerant in your makeup bag this morning?”

Vanessa couldn't speak. She stared at the vial of poison as if it were a ghost.

Luca turned and pointed at the head of the dining table. At his own pristine, untouched wine glass, sitting next to the shattered remnants of the decanter.

“You didn't just sell me out to the syndicate, Vanessa,” Luca said, the betrayal finally hardening into absolute fury. “You planned to poison my drink tonight. You planned to murder me at my own engagement dinner, blame my death on a heart attack caused by the stress of a robbery, and inherit my entire empire by sunrise.”

The guests gasped in unison. The ultimate betrayal was laid bare.

Vanessa opened her mouth, but no words came out. She was completely, utterly trapped.

But as two of Luca’s men stepped forward to grab her arms, Vanessa let out a shrill, desperate, hysterical laugh.

“You think you’re so smart, Luca?” Vanessa shrieked, her eyes wild, her carefully constructed elegance entirely destroyed. “You think you’ve figured everything out? You think your little maid saved you?”

May you like

Vanessa pointed a trembling, accusing finger directly at Marco, who was leaning heavily against a chair, catching his breath.

“Ask your loyal manager why he took the blame for the catering bill!” Vanessa screamed. “Ask him where he’s been sending thousands of dollars of your money every single month!”
