Chapter 5 - THE EMPTY CHAMBER

The heavy wooden door crashed into the hallway wall.
Sabrina whipped around, her eyes widening in absolute shock as Evelyn stepped out of the shadows, her father’s heavy hunting rifle raised and aimed directly at Sabrina’s chest.
“Drop the gun, Sabrina,” Evelyn said. Her voice didn't shake. The years of quiet submission, of playing the dutiful wife, evaporated in the frigid air of the stolen cottage.
Sabrina froze, but the silver handgun remained pointed at Julian. “You don't have the nerve, Evelyn. You’re a bookkeeper. You’re soft.”
“I sold this house to save my family once,” Evelyn said, stepping closer. “I won't hesitate to defend my grandson in it today. Drop it.”
The little boy in Julian’s arms began to cry, burying his face in Julian’s neck.
Sabrina’s eyes darted from the rifle to Evelyn’s face. She let out a breathy, nervous laugh. “That thing has been sitting in a cellar for twenty-six years. It's not even loaded.”
“My father was a Marine,” Evelyn said coldly. “He never stored a weapon empty. Do you want to test that theory for twenty-eight million dollars?”
For a long, agonizing second, the room held its breath. The only sound was the wind howling against the glass porch.
Slowly, Sabrina lowered her weapon and dropped it onto the Persian rug.
“Kick it to me,” Julian ordered, his voice cracking.
Sabrina kicked the gun across the floor. Julian scooped it up, immediately stepping in front of the little boy to shield him.
Evelyn didn't lower the rifle. “Julian, take my grandson to the car. My keys are in my coat pocket.”
“You’re kidnapping my child?” Sabrina shrieked, her composed facade completely shattering. “I have legal papers! I have the adoption records! If you take him, I’ll call the FBI and have Brad arrested for human trafficking. He forged the hospital documents!”
“Call them,” Evelyn said, her eyes dead and cold. “Call the FBI, Sabrina. Tell them how you extorted a CEO. Tell them how you conspired to defraud a $28 million real estate deal. Let’s see who they arrest first.”
Julian didn't wait. He grabbed Evelyn’s coat, hoisted the little boy onto his hip, and bolted out the front door.
Evelyn kept the rifle trained on Sabrina.
“You think Brad is innocent?” Sabrina spat, taking a step toward Evelyn. “You think he was just protecting Claire? Brad didn't hide this baby to protect your daughter's reputation. He did it to protect the inheritance.”
Evelyn frowned, keeping her finger near the trigger guard. “What inheritance?”
Sabrina smiled, a wicked, venomous curl of her lips. “Your father didn't just leave you this cottage, Evelyn. He left a trust. A massive, untouchable trust meant for his firstborn grandchild. But there was a stipulation.”
Sabrina took another step.
“The grandchild had to be born within a legitimate marriage. If Claire had an out-of-wedlock child, the trust would be dissolved and donated to charity. Brad couldn't let that happen. His company was secretly drowning in debt even back then. He needed that trust money as collateral. So he made the baby disappear, planning to wait until Claire got married to claim she had a 'miracle' child.”
Evelyn felt a wave of nausea. Brad hadn't just stolen her house. He had monetized their daughter’s trauma. He had traded his own flesh and blood to keep a failing business afloat.
“But I found out,” Sabrina purred. “I was working as an intern at Thomas Keller’s law firm. I saw the fake adoption papers. I took the boy, and I made Brad pay me to keep my mouth shut. Every luxury trip, every diamond, every check... it was ransom, Evelyn. Your husband isn't a victim. He's a monster.”
Suddenly, the blinding lights of a second vehicle swept across the windows.
A black Mercedes slammed to a halt on the gravel driveway, blocking Evelyn’s sedan.
The front door of the cottage flew open, and Brad stormed in. He looked completely unhinged, his tie ripped off, his eyes wild. He took one look at Evelyn holding the rifle and Sabrina standing empty-handed, and he did something Evelyn never expected.
He didn't beg for forgiveness.

He pulled a gun from the back of his waistband and aimed it directly at Evelyn.
“Put the rifle down, Evie,” Brad said, his voice trembling with a dark, terrifying desperation. “I can't let you leave with that boy.”
