Chapter 6 - THE SUBTERRANEAN LAB

We plunged down the narrow spiral staircase, the iron steps groaning under our weight as we descended deep beneath the foundations of the Moretti mansion.
The air grew damp and cool, smelling of ozone, old stone, and subterranean dust.
Behind us, muffled shouts echoed from the vault above, followed by the terrifying sound of heavy machinery drilling into the reinforced concrete floor.
"They're trying to breach the hidden panel!" I yelled over the din, my feet flying down the steps.
"Keep moving!" Luca shouted back, holding his flashlight in one hand and keeping me anchored with the other.
We reached the bottom of the staircase and burst into a massive, cavernous concrete chamber that stretched out like a Cold War bunker. Rows of humming server racks lined the walls, their green and amber indicator lights blinking rhythmically in the darkness.
At the far end of the room stood a heavy steel terminal console glowing with federal encryption screens.
"This is it," Luca breathed, pulling me toward the console.
He shoved his tactical pistol into his waistband, dropped into the ergonomic chair in front of the terminal, and began flying across the mechanical keyboard with surprising speed. Lines of green code cascaded down the monitors.
"The firewall is encrypted with a military-grade protocol," Luca muttered, a bead of sweat rolling down his temple. "I need the master key to bypass the main gateway."
"The microchip!" I said, pulling the silver locket from my pocket and popping it open. I popped the tiny microchip out of its velvet bed and handed it to him. "Will this work?"
"It has to," Luca said.
He slid the microchip into the terminal's side port.
BEEP.
A bright red warning screen flashed across the monitors:
ACCESS GRANTED: LEVEL-ONE OVERRIDE. WELCOME, DIRECTOR VANCE.
"Got it," Luca exhaled sharply.
He pulled the digital transmitter from his tactical vest, connected it to the console via a fiber-optic cable, and hit a single execution key.
UPLOADING DATA PACKET... 10%... 45%... 80%...
A progress bar filled the central screen.
Suddenly, the overhead fluorescent lights in the bunker flickered violently and died, plunging us into total darkness except for the harsh, blood-red emergency glow of the backup lights.
ALARM! UNAUTHORIZED DATA EXPORT DETECTED, an automated synthesized voice blared from the ceiling speakers. INITIATING LOCKDOWN.
Heavy steel security shutters slammed down across the bunker’s only exit stairwell with a deafening crash.
"Damn it!" Luca slammed his fist against the desk. "They've locked the physical bulkheads from the main security grid upstairs!"
Before I could answer, the heavy steel door at the opposite end of the bunker—hidden behind a rack of server equipment—began to screech on its hinges.
Heavy, methodical footsteps echoed from the threshold.
A tall silhouette stepped into the red emergency light.
It was Arthur Vance.
In his right hand, he held a silenced automatic pistol, pointed directly at Luca’s chest. Behind him stood Mrs. Sullivan, her face twisted into a cold, unrecognizable sneer, and two heavily armed federal tactical agents in full riot gear.
"End of the line, Luca," Arthur Vance said smoothly, a chilling smile playing on his lips. "You really thought a low-level mafia boss could outsmart thirty years of federal infrastructure?"
Luca slowly stood up from the console, putting himself directly between Arthur's gun and me.
"You murdered my wife, Arthur," Luca said, his voice dropping into a register so cold it felt like ice water in my veins. "You framed my father, and you terrorized my son."
"Isabella was a liability," Arthur replied dismissively, raising his pistol an inch higher. "Just like you are right now. And as for the housemaid..." He glanced over at me with mild distaste. "Wrong place, wrong time."
Mrs. Sullivan stepped forward, her eyes locked on mine with a look of pure, unadulterated venom.
"I told you girls should learn their place," Mrs. Sullivan spat, her frail persona completely vanished. "Seams are meant to hold clothes together, child—not tear apart empires."
Arthur raised his finger toward the trigger.
"Any last words, Luca?"
Luca didn't flinch. Instead, a slow, knowing smile crept across his lips.
He looked up at the main monitor behind the console.
The progress bar on the screen flashed a brilliant, blinding green.
UPLOAD COMPLETE: 100%. DATA BROADCASTED TO 48 GLOBAL NEWS OUTLETS AND FEDERAL GRAND JURY SERVERS.
Arthur’s face went instantly pale.
"No," Arthur gasped, spinning around toward the console.
Too late.
The red emergency lights suddenly shifted to a pulsing blue, and every speaker in the bunker chimed with a crisp, automated notification:
BROADCAST SUCCESSFUL.

Luca stepped forward, his dark eyes locked onto the paralyzed federal prosecutor, raising his own weapon with deadly, unshakable precision.
"Your last words, Arthur?" Luca whispered.
