Chapter 4 - THE CHILD'S DRAWING

The crystal chandeliers above us seemed to flicker as the sheer weight of Leo’s accusation settled over the dining room.
“The monster,” Leo sobbed, burying his face back into Adrian’s neck. “She tells me if I scream, she’ll make you go away forever.”
Adrian held his son fiercely. The muscles in his back were coiled so tight they looked as if they might snap. He didn't yell. He didn't charge at Vanessa. The absolute, freezing silence radiating from him was infinitely more terrifying than any shout.
He slowly handed Leo to me.
“Hold him, Emily,” Adrian whispered.
I took the little boy into my arms. Leo immediately wrapped his legs around my waist and his arms around my neck, trembling like a leaf. I pressed my cheek against his dark hair, glaring at the woman who had terrorized this innocent child.
Adrian turned to face his fiancée.
Vanessa’s facade was completely crumbling. The poised, elegant woman in the red silk gown looked like a cornered animal. She took another step backward, her high heel catching slightly on the Persian rug.
“Adrian, please,” Vanessa pleaded, her voice shaking. “The boy is confused. He has nightmares! You know he has nightmares!”
“He isn't confused about a photograph, Vanessa,” Adrian said, holding up the torn picture of her and Harold. “You told me you were an only child. You told me you built your marketing firm from scratch. But here you are, twenty years ago, standing on Harold’s private jet.”
Harold groaned from the floor, clutching his bruised throat. “She’s… she’s my niece, Adrian. My sister’s girl.”
A wave of shocked murmurs rippled through the remaining guests.
“Your niece,” Adrian repeated, his voice dangerously soft. He took a slow, deliberate step toward Vanessa. “You planted your own niece in my life. You arranged for us to meet. You pushed for this engagement.”
“We had to!” Vanessa cried out, tears ruining her perfect makeup. “You were ruining the business, Adrian! You were going legitimate! You were going to shut down the offshore accounts and give everything to charity! Harold spent his life building this syndicate, and you were going to throw it away!”
“So you decided to marry me to keep control of the assets,” Adrian concluded, stopping a few feet from her. “And what was the plan after the wedding, Vanessa? A tragic accident on our honeymoon? A sudden heart attack, just like my father?”
Vanessa swallowed hard, unable to meet his eyes. Her silence was a confession.
“But you hit a roadblock, didn't you?” Eleanor Hayes interjected, leaning heavily on her cane. “You couldn't take complete control because you didn't have Thomas Carter’s master ledger. You didn't know where the real money was hidden.”
Adrian looked back at Leo. “Why were you sneaking into my son’s room, Vanessa? What were you looking for?”
Vanessa crossed her arms defensively. “Victoria told Harold she hid the vault key in a stuffed animal years ago. I’ve been tearing that brat’s room apart for weeks looking for it.”
My heart stopped.
The key. The secret hidden in a toy.
I looked down at Leo, who was still clinging to me. Just yesterday, while I was cleaning his room, Leo had been frantically coloring with his crayons. He had insisted I take one of his drawings to keep it "safe from the bad lady."
I had folded it up and put it in my apron pocket, thinking it was just a child’s game.
My hand slowly crept down to the deep pocket of my black maid’s apron. My fingers brushed against folded paper.
Vanessa saw the movement. Her eyes locked onto my pocket like a hawk spotting prey in the grass.
“You,” Vanessa hissed, pointing at me. “He gave it to you, didn't he?”
Adrian turned his head sharply. “Emily? What does she mean?”
“Yesterday,” I said, my voice trembling. “Leo gave me a drawing. He told me to keep it safe.”
“Give it to me,” Vanessa demanded, stepping toward me.
“Stay exactly where you are,” Adrian warned her, blocking her path with his massive frame. He turned to me, his eyes softening just a fraction. “Emily, let me see it.”
Holding Leo with my left arm, I reached into my apron with my right hand. I pulled out the folded piece of construction paper.
I opened it.
It was a frantic, scribbled drawing of a house, a dog, and a giant sun. But as I looked closer, my breath caught.
Hidden inside the bright yellow rays of the sun, written in a completely different, adult handwriting, was a sequence of numbers.
“It’s not a key,” I whispered, staring at the numbers. “It’s a combination. Six digits. And coordinates.”
“Coordinates to the offshore vault,” Harold gasped from the floor, his eyes wide with desperate greed.
“My father’s handwriting,” I realized, tears springing to my eyes. “He didn't hide a physical key. He hid the combination in Leo’s room, knowing nobody in this ruthless family would ever bother to look closely at a child’s artwork.”
Adrian reached out to take the drawing from me.
But before his fingers could touch the paper, a deafening, metallic CLACK echoed through the dining room.
Everyone froze.
I looked past Adrian.
Harold Voss was no longer cowering on the floor. He was standing up.
And he was holding a heavy, silver handgun.
He didn't point it at Adrian. He didn't point it at me.
He had grabbed Victoria Moretti by her hair, pulling the matriarch violently against his chest, and was pressing the barrel of the gun directly against her temple.
“Nobody moves!” Harold screamed, his face completely unhinged.
Victoria shrieked, clawing helplessly at Harold’s arm. “Harold! Stop! What are you doing?!”
Adrian went completely rigid. “Let my mother go, Harold. You pull that trigger, and I will tear you apart with my bare hands.”
May you like
“The drawing, Emily!” Harold ordered, the gun shaking against Victoria’s skull. “Bring it to me right now, or I blow her head off in front of everyone!”
I clutched Leo tighter, stepping backward, the precious piece of paper gripped in my hand. I was trapped between a mafia boss and a desperate killer, and the only thing keeping us alive was a child’s crayon drawing.
