Chapter 7 - THE FAMILY PORTRAIT

The flashing red and blue lights illuminated the rundown street.

Police officers swarmed the house.

This time, Victoria couldn't buy her way out.

Maria’s testimony, the kidnapped daughter, and the physical signature page were too much evidence for even corrupt officers to ignore.

They handcuffed Victoria.

She didn't scream or fight as they led her away.

She just stared at me with cold, dead eyes.

“You’re still just a maid,” she sneered as they pushed her into the cruiser.

I didn't answer her.

I didn't need to.

We drove Lily and Maria back to the Sterling mansion.

The grand foyer was quiet when we walked in.

The marble floors gleamed. The chandelier glowed softly.

It felt completely different now.

The heavy, oppressive atmosphere Victoria had forced upon the house was gone.

Julian walked into the library.

I followed him.

He walked over to the brass panel behind the bookshelf.

He looked at the empty hidden drawer.

Then he turned to me.

“You risked your life tonight, Clara. For a family that isn't even yours.”

“I did it because it was right,” I said.

Julian walked over to his father’s heavy wooden desk.

He set the will and the signature page down side by side.

They fit perfectly together like a puzzle piece.

“My father wanted me to have this,” Julian said softly. “He wanted to protect me from her.”

He looked up at the massive family portrait hanging above the fireplace.

It showed Mr. Sterling, Julian, and Victoria.

Julian walked over to the fireplace.

He picked up a heavy brass poker.

He swung it directly into the canvas, tearing a massive hole right through Victoria’s painted face.

He dropped the poker.

“We’ll get a new painting,” Julian said.

I smiled.

“I can help you take it down, sir.”

“Clara,” Julian said, turning to me. “You are never calling me 'sir' again. And you are never picking up a dust cloth in this house again.”

I looked at him.

“What do you mean?”

“I need someone I can trust to help me run this estate. To manage the trust. To make sure nothing like this ever happens again.”

He held out his hand.

“I want you to be the estate manager.”

My eyes filled with tears.

For two years, I had been invisible.

Now, I was being handed the keys to the kingdom.

“I would be honored,” I said, shaking his hand.

Over the next few weeks, the mansion transformed.

Julian fired every corrupt member of the staff, starting with Marcus, who was arrested for his role in the kidnapping.

Maria was given a generous pension and a cottage on the estate grounds.

And Lily.

Lily finally got to come home.

She moved into the largest guest suite.

For the first time in her life, she didn't have to hide. She laughed in the hallways. She played the grand piano in the parlor.

She brought life back into a house that had been holding its breath for years.

One Tuesday afternoon, I was walking through the library.

I wasn't carrying cleaning supplies.

I was carrying a stack of financial reports to review with Julian.

I stopped in front of the bookshelf.

The brass panel had been sealed shut.

I touched the wood, remembering the thick cream envelope and the red wax seal.

Sometimes, the things we are told to walk away from are the exact things we are meant to find.

Julian walked into the library.

He smiled when he saw me.

“Ready for the meeting, Clara?”

I smiled back.

May you like

“Yes, Julian. I’m ready.”

I walked out of the library, leaving the ghosts of the Sterling family behind me, and stepped into the bright, open foyer of my new life.
