Chapter 7 - THE FLASHBULBS AT THE GATES

The heavy oak front doors swung open to reveal a wall of blinding white flashbulbs and a chaotic wall of reporters shouting questions over the sound of the pouring rain.
News vans from three major national networks were parked across the estate's private courtyard, their satellite dishes spinning under the stormy night sky. Microphones bearing station logos were thrust aggressively toward the steps as Vanessa Moretti stood near the center of the crowd, wrapped in a designer mink coat, dramatically wiping dry tears from her mascara-stained eyes for the cameras.
“It’s a complete corporate hostage situation!” Vanessa shouted into a live reporter’s microphone, milking the moment for all it was worth. “Vincent Moretti and his underground associates have locked down the family estate, detained executive officers without due process, and are currently harboring unauthorized individuals inside private residential quarters! The public deserves to know what is happening behind these gates!”
Inside the foyer, I instinctively stepped back, pulling Sophie closer behind the heavy velvet curtain of the entryway.
“She’s trying to spin the narrative before the federal press release goes out,” Helen Crawford said, tightening her leather folio under her arm with professional disdain. “If the media paints this as a violent family feud rather than a corporate fraud investigation, the stock market will open tomorrow morning in freefall.”
Vincent didn't flinch. He adjusted the cuffs of his dark suit jacket, his expression as cold and immovable as granite. He didn't look like a disgraced mafia heir; he looked like a man who had finally decided to burn down the corrupt house he had spent a decade trying to keep upright.
“Let them roll the cameras,” Vincent said quietly. He turned to Agent Vance. “Do we have the certified copies of the trust deed and Daniel’s audio confession cleared for public release?”
Vance pulled a secure flash drive from his pocket and tossed it casually to Vincent. “Cleared by the U.S. Attorney's office ten minutes ago. Go get 'em, Mr. Moretti.”
Vincent walked forward, pushing open the grand oak doors and stepping out onto the stone portico under the driving rain and the barrage of flashing lights.
The noise was deafening. Reporters screamed over one another, thrusting cameras forward.
“Mr. Moretti! Are the corruption allegations against your brother true?”
“Is it true that you’ve seized control of Moretti Holdings by force?”
“Who are the civilians currently residing inside the estate?”
Vincent raised his right hand. Just one simple gesture. The sheer authority in his posture was enough to make the shouting reporters instantly quiet down, the camera lenses zooming in on his face.
He didn't look at Vanessa, who was standing near the edge of the press circle looking smug and vindicated. Instead, he looked straight into the primary network camera lens.
“Good evening,” Vincent began, his deep, resonant voice cutting clearly through the roar of the rain. “For thirty years, the Moretti name has been associated with power, wealth, and influence. But tonight, my family stands before the public not as conquerors, but as cleansers of our own house.”
He held up the heavy gold-plated pocket watch and the sealed trust deed for the cameras to see.
“My brother, Daniel Moretti, along with corporate conspirators attempting to exploit our family trust, orchestrated a systematic scheme to liquidate public educational assets and demolish community reading rooms established by my late mother, Eleanor Moretti. Those assets do not belong to Moretti Holdings. They belong to the children of our workers.”
Vanessa pushed her way toward the front of the barricades, her face twisted in rage. “He’s lying! He’s trying to cover up his own criminal syndicate activities! Look at him—he’s holding stolen property!”
Before the reporters could react to Vanessa’s outburst, the courtyard gates swung open once more, and a second federal convoy rolled in. Two federal marshals stepped out, walking directly toward Vanessa with a formal federal warrant signed by a federal judge.
“Vanessa Moretti?” the lead marshal asked, holding out the document. “You are hereby served with a federal injunction for obstruction of justice, conspiracy to commit asset fraud, and coordinated tampering with federal conservation property. You have the right to remain silent.”
The flashbulbs erupted into a blinding frenzy. Microphones swung wildly toward Vanessa as she shrieked in outrage, her mink coat slipping from her shoulders into the wet mud as federal agents gently but firmly escorted her toward an unmarked cruiser.
Vincent watched her go without a single flicker of emotion on his face. Then, he turned back to the camera, stepping aside slightly to reveal Margaret Wilson standing in the doorway behind him, with ten-year-old Sophie holding her hand, and me standing close beside them.
“The reading room is not closed,” Vincent announced clearly to the nation. “It will reopen tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM. Admission is free, forever. And the true custodian of my mother’s legacy is standing right here.”

He gently placed his hand on Sophie’s shoulder. The little girl looked up into the camera lens, holding her green storybook proudly against her chest, her dark eyes shining with quiet, unshakeable dignity.
As the camera flashed, capturing the historic moment for millions of viewers across America, I knew that whatever happened next, the dark shadow over the Moretti estate had finally been lifted forever.
