Chapter 8 - THE BRACELET

The three corrupt guards stared at my father in stunned silence. They had grown up hearing ghost stories about Matteo Romano, the traitor who vanished into the night.

Now, he was standing in front of them, the barrel of his revolver still smoking.

“Drop your weapons,” Matteo said, his voice rough as gravel.

The guards looked at each other, then down at Briggs, who was still wheezing on the floor, and finally at Vanessa’s motionless body. Realizing they were on the losing side of a war that had just ended, they slowly placed their guns on the stone floor and kicked them away.

I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t speak.

I scrambled to my feet, pulling Grace up with me, and ran across the room.

I slammed into my father’s chest. He dropped his gun and wrapped his arms around me, burying his face in my hair. He smelled like tobacco, old leather, and safety.

“You’re alive,” I sobbed into his coat. “You didn't come back. You promised, but you didn't come back.”

“I know, Hannah. I am so sorry,” he whispered, his voice cracking. “I tried to come back. But Carlton’s men were watching you. I knew if I showed my face, they would kill us both. I had to stay dead to keep you alive.”

He pulled back, his eyes searching my face, taking in the soot and the tears. Then he looked down at Grace, who was staring up at him with wide, curious eyes.

“Grandpa?” she asked softly.

Tears spilled from my father’s eyes. He knelt down on the cold stone floor and gently touched Grace’s cheek. “You’ve grown so beautiful, Gracie. You look just like your mother.”

Vincent stood perfectly still in the center of the room, watching the reunion. His expression was a storm of relief, awe, and deep, lingering pain.

Matteo stood up and turned to face Vincent.

The silence between them was heavy with thirty years of secrets, lies, and stolen lives.

“Vincent,” Matteo said softly. “You look just like him.”

Vincent swallowed hard. “You knew my father was alive.”

Matteo nodded slowly. “Your father saved my life, Vincent. When Giuseppe ordered the hit, your father found me first. He staged the robbery to give me cash, and he smuggled me out of the city. He spent years trying to clear my name from the shadows.”

“And eight years ago in Chicago?” Vincent asked, his voice trembling.

“He came to warn me that Vanessa’s father had found us,” Matteo explained. “He told me to run. I went back for Hannah and her mother, but I was too late to save my wife.”

Matteo’s face tightened with grief before he continued.

“Your father stayed behind at the hotel in Chicago. He knew Carlton’s assassins were coming for him because he had been caught looking into the old ledgers. He blew the hotel room himself, faking his death, so Carlton would stop hunting him.”

“Where is he now?” Vincent pleaded, taking a step forward. “Please, Matteo. Tell me he’s alive.”

Matteo reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, tarnished silver charm bracelet.

Vincent stopped breathing.

“My mother’s bracelet,” Vincent whispered. “He never took it off.”

Matteo walked over and gently placed the bracelet into Vincent’s massive hand.

“He’s safe, Vincent. He’s been living off the grid in a cabin in Montana. We’ve been communicating through old classified ads for years. When I saw the society papers announcing your engagement to Vanessa Carlton… we knew she was making her final move. We knew it was time to come home.”

Vincent closed his fingers around the bracelet, pressing it to his chest. A single tear escaped his eye, tracing a path through the soot on his cheek.

The heavy, suffocating weight of the Romano empire—the lies, the betrayals, the blood—seemed to lift from Vincent’s shoulders in that single moment. He wasn't alone anymore.

Suddenly, Briggs groaned from the floor. He was trying to reach for one of the discarded pistols.

Vincent didn't even look. He took one step, brought his heavy boot down on Briggs’s wrist, and kicked the gun into the dark tunnel.

“Bind them,” Vincent ordered his father calmly. “We’re taking them up to the authorities. Vanessa’s father will spend the rest of his miserable life in federal prison when I hand over the ledgers we found tonight.”

Together, Vincent and Matteo tied up the corrupt guards using the men’s own belts.

When it was done, Vincent walked over to me.

He looked exhausted, his expensive clothes ruined, his knuckles bruised, but his eyes were softer than I had ever seen them.

“Are you hurt?” he asked, his voice a low, intimate rumble.

“I’m okay,” I said, clutching Grace’s hand.

Vincent reached out and gently brushed a smudge of soot from my cheek. His touch sent a warm shiver down my spine.

“I promised you nobody would ever hurt you again,” Vincent said quietly. “I intend to keep that promise for the rest of my life, Hannah.”

I looked up into his dark eyes, realizing with a sudden, breathless clarity that the terrifying mafia boss hadn't just saved my life tonight. He had seen my scars, heard my secrets, and hadn't looked away.

“Let’s go home,” Vincent said, turning to Matteo.

My father smiled. “Lead the way, boss.”
