THE HEIR'S RECKONING / Chapter 7 / 8

Chapter 8 - THE FAMILY HEIRLOOM

The rain had stopped by the time they reached the private tarmac at Teterboro Airport.

A sleek, unmarked Gulfstream jet idled on the runway, its engines whining softly in the cold night air.

Victoria stood by the boarding stairs, clutching the heavy wool coat around her shoulders. Beside her stood Sophia and Caroline. Two sisters who had never known each other, both victims of the same cruel father, now standing shoulder to shoulder in the dark.

Anthony, the fake heir, sat in the back of one of the SUVs, shivering and silent. Dr. Rossi's men had promised to drop him at a rural bus station with enough cash to disappear. He would never be a mob boss, but he would live.

Michael stood a few feet away, looking back toward the skyline of New York City.

As they watched, a massive, silent flash of orange light illuminated the horizon over Red Hook. Seconds later, a deep, earth-shaking rumble rolled across the water.

Pier 44 was gone. The armory, the ledger, and Carlo Romano were nothing but ash sinking into the harbor.

The Romano crime family had officially ceased to exist.

"It's over," Sophia whispered, letting out a long, shuddering breath.

Victoria walked over to Michael. The twenty-four-year-old was staring at the smoke rising in the distance, his face unreadable.

"Are you ready?" Victoria asked softly.

Michael looked at her. "I don't even have a passport."

Victoria smiled gently. "Elias took care of everything. You are listed as Michael Rossi, his nephew. We are going to a small estate in Tuscany. It's quiet. No cameras, no enemies, no empire."

She reached out and took his hand.

"You don't have to call me Grandmother, or Mother, or anything you aren't comfortable with, Michael," Victoria said, her eyes filling with genuine emotion. "Daniel Hayes was your father. He raised a good, honorable man. I just want the chance to know you."

Michael looked down at the woman who had commanded armies, ordered hits, and ruled a city with an iron fist. Tonight, she was just an old woman who wanted her family back.

"I'd like that," Michael said quietly.

Victoria smiled, a tear finally slipping down her wrinkled cheek.

She reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a heavy, ornate gold ring. The center stone was a massive, flawless ruby, surrounded by diamonds. It was the Romano family signet ring, passed down for four generations. The ultimate symbol of power and authority.

"This belonged to Carlo's grandfather," Victoria said, holding the ring up in the dim runway lights. "He wore it every day. I took it from his desk before we left the office."

She held it out to Michael.

"It is your birthright," Victoria said. "The last remaining piece of the Romano legacy."

Michael looked at the heavy gold ring. He saw the blood it represented. He saw the greed, the betrayal, and the violence that had nearly destroyed everyone standing on this tarmac.

He didn't take the ring.

"I don't want a legacy," Michael said softly.

He reached out, closing Victoria's fingers over the gold ring.

"Drop it in the ocean when we fly over," Michael said. "I brought the only heirloom I need."

He pulled the simple wooden rosary from his pocket, wrapping it around his wrist.

Victoria looked at her son, profound respect shining in her eyes.

"Let's go home," she whispered.

They boarded the plane.

As the jet climbed into the night sky, banking east over the dark expanse of the Atlantic Ocean, Victoria opened the small emergency window hatch in the private cabin.

She held the heavy gold signet ring out into the freezing wind.

With a deep sigh of relief, she let it go.

The ring tumbled into the darkness, swallowed forever by the black water below. The Romano empire was finally dead.

But as Victoria turned back to her family, relaxing into the plush leather seat, Caroline walked out of the cockpit holding a small, sealed envelope.

"Victoria," Caroline said, her voice tight with sudden apprehension. "The pilot just handed me this. He said Dr. Rossi left it for you before we took off."
