Chapter 4 - THE HUSBAND IN THE SHADOWS

The word hung in the air like smoke after a gunshot.
Husband.
Vanessa stumbled back, hitting the edge of the dining table. The wine glasses rattled.
“What did you just say?” Luca’s voice dropped an octave, vibrating with a lethal calmness. He took a slow step toward his fiancée.
“She’s lying!” Vanessa screamed, her perfect facade completely shattering. “Luca, she doctored a photo! She’s trying to ruin us!”
Luca didn't look at Vanessa. He picked up the photograph Teresa had thrown on the table. I could see the image from where I stood—a grainy security still of a tall man in a dark trench coat, opening a metal locker.
“This man,” Luca said, his eyes scanning the image. “This is Arthur Vance. The real estate developer you introduced to me last month.”
Vanessa’s lips trembled. She shook her head in frantic, jagged motions.
“Arthur Vance isn't just a developer,” Margaret Sullivan spoke up from the doorway, leaning heavily on her cane. “His real name is Arthur Bellini. He’s Vanessa’s legal husband. They never divorced. They’ve been running cons on wealthy families from Miami to Charleston for a decade.”
The dining room erupted into chaos. Several guests stood up.
Luca held up a single hand. The room fell dead silent again.
“You planned to marry me,” Luca said to Vanessa, his tone dangerously soft. “You planned to forge the port documents in my name, transfer the assets to Arthur’s shell companies, and what? Disappear?”
Vanessa burst into tears. But they weren't tears of guilt. They were tears of pure, desperate panic.
“I had no choice!” she cried out, falling to her knees on the Persian rug. “Luca, you have to believe me! I didn't want to do it! He made me!”
“Who made you?” Luca demanded.
Before Vanessa could answer, the heavy oak doors of the dining room swung open.
Luca’s head of security, a massive man named Dante, walked in. But Dante wasn't alone. He was dragging a man by the collar of his expensive suit. Dante threw the man onto the floor.
It was Arthur Vance. His face was bruised, his lip bleeding.
“Found him trying to slip out the back gate,” Dante grunted. “He was listening to the whole dinner through a bug planted in the chandelier.”
Arthur spat blood onto the floor and glared up at Vanessa. “You stupid, weak woman. You ruined everything.”
Luca crouched down in front of Arthur. “Where is the evidence from the locker? The proof of who killed my father.”
Arthur laughed, a wet, ugly sound. “I burned it, Moretti. The moment I took it out. You’ll never know.”
“You didn't burn it,” a new voice echoed through the room.
I turned. We all turned.
Standing behind Dante was a man in a tailored grey suit. He had silver hair at his temples and walked with an arrogant swagger.
It was Marco Moretti. Luca’s uncle. Antonio’s younger brother.
Marco stepped into the room, holding a heavy, leather-bound ledger. “Arthur didn't burn it, because Arthur works for me.”

Before Luca could react, Marco pulled a silver handgun from his jacket and pointed it directly at my chest.
“And this little maid,” Marco smiled, cocking the hammer, “is going to pay for her brother’s sins.”
