Chapter 9 - A SEAT AT THE TABLE

Two weeks later, the Moretti estate was bathed in the warm, golden light of late afternoon.

The dining room had been repaired. The shattered chandelier was replaced, and the mahogany table was polished to a high shine. But the atmosphere in the house had fundamentally changed.

The heavy, oppressive weight of Carmine’s secrets was gone. The guards didn’t hover as closely. The associates who chose to stay were businessmen now, not enforcers.

I was in the dining room, setting the table for Sunday dinner.

I placed a crystal water glass down, making sure it aligned perfectly with the silver cutlery.

“Do you need help with that, Hannah?”

I turned and smiled as Vanessa walked into the room. She wasn't wearing a red silk evening gown today. She was wearing comfortable jeans and a soft cream sweater. She looked relaxed. She looked like herself.

“I’ve got it, Miss Vanessa,” I teased.

She laughed and bumped her shoulder playfully against mine. “I told you, it’s just Vanessa.”

Things had been difficult for a few days after the engagement dinner. Luca and Vanessa had spent hours behind closed doors, unraveling years of lies and fears. But true love, when stripped of ego and secrets, has a remarkable ability to heal. They had chosen each other, flaws and all.

I watched as little Leo ran into the room, clutching a brand-new toy car.

“Look, Hannah!” Leo beamed, holding it up. “Grandpa Frank gave it to me!”

My heart warmed at the name. Grandpa Frank.

Frank walked into the room a moment later. He wasn't wearing his driver’s uniform, nor was he wearing the old charcoal suit. He was wearing a handsome, perfectly tailored navy blazer that Luca had bought him as a retirement gift.

He looked taller. He looked proud.

“He’s spoiling that boy,” Luca said, walking in behind Frank and clapping the older man on the shoulder.

“He deserves to be spoiled,” Frank countered with a warm smile, scooping Leo up and pretending to inspect the toy car.

Luca walked to the head of the table. He looked at the place settings I had arranged.

“Perfect as always, Hannah,” Luca said. “Will you be joining us?”

I smiled and shook my head. “Thank you, Luca. But my sister is expecting me in town for dinner.”

Luca nodded, respecting my boundaries. But I knew the offer was genuine. I was no longer just the staff; I was a trusted part of this household’s foundation.

As I gathered my things to leave, I paused in the doorway to look back at the dining room.

Luca took his seat at the head of the table. He reached out and took Vanessa’s hand, pulling her into the chair beside him. She smiled at him, a genuine, radiant smile that reached her eyes.

Little Leo sat on Vanessa’s other side, happily zooming his toy car across his placemat.

And directly across from Luca, in the seat of honor, sat Frank.

He wasn't eating in the kitchen. He wasn't hiding in the shadows. He was exactly where he belonged.

Frank looked up and caught my eye. He gave me a small, knowing nod.

I nodded back, stepping out into the cool evening air.

The driver was finally home.
