Chapter 6 - THE CONFESSION LIVESTREAM

"Pull over, Maria!" Carlos yelled through the open window, the wind whipping his voice into a frantic snarl. "Or I swear to God, I'll blow the tires and flip you into the ditch!"

Maria’s face hardened into a mask of pure fury. She looked at the man who had abandoned their son, the man who had murdered my husband for a few thousand dollars.

"Hold on," Maria commanded.

Instead of braking, she jerked the steering wheel hard to the left, slamming our heavy SUV directly into the side of the police cruiser.

Metal shrieked against metal. The cruiser swerved wildly, sparks flying as it scraped against the highway guardrail. Carlos dropped his gun, grabbing the dashboard to brace himself.

"Maria, are you crazy?!" I screamed, clutching the dashboard.

"I'm not letting him take my son's future!" Maria roared, flooring the gas pedal. Our heavier vehicle maintained its momentum, forcing the cruiser to brake violently to avoid spinning out.

We tore ahead, putting a hundred yards between us and the damaged police car.

"We can't outrun a radio," Eleanor yelled from the back. "They'll have roadblocks up in minutes!"

She was right. The local police force was in Harrington's pocket. We were boxed in.

"We don't need to outrun them," I said, a desperate, reckless plan forming in my mind. "We need an audience. An audience so big they can't sweep this under the rug."

"Where?" Maria asked.

"The high school," I said. "It's five miles away. Today is the district-wide PTA summit. The Mayor, the regional director, and hundreds of parents are in the auditorium right now for the annual budget presentation."

Maria didn't hesitate. She took the next exit at sixty miles an hour, tires squealing as we merged onto the local streets.

Five minutes later, we crashed through the chain-link gates of Westbrook High School.

The parking lot was packed. We abandoned the SUV at the front curb.

"Sophie, stay close," I ordered, grabbing her hand.

We burst through the front doors of the high school. The main hallways were empty; everyone was in the auditorium.

I pushed through the heavy wooden double doors of the auditorium.

The massive room was packed with nearly five hundred parents, teachers, and local journalists. On the brightly lit stage, the Mayor was standing at a podium, smiling broadly next to a projected graph showing "Increased Educational Funding."

"Stop the presentation!" I screamed at the top of my lungs.

Every head in the room turned.

I marched down the center aisle, my clothes torn, covered in dust, holding the printed life insurance policy and the mechanic’s receipt in the air.

"Rebecca Mitchell?" the Mayor said, his face paling instantly. He gripped the podium. "Security, please escort this woman out. She is having a medical emergency."

Two burly security guards started moving down the aisles toward me.

"I am not crazy!" I yelled, reaching the front of the stage. "This man is a thief! He and Principal Harrington have been stealing millions in school property funds, routing it through shell companies!"

The crowd erupted into confused murmurs. Parents began standing up.

"She's delusional!" the Mayor shouted into the microphone. "Her husband died, it broke her mind!"

"My husband was murdered!" I fired back. I slammed the documents onto the edge of the stage. "Because he found out!"

Suddenly, the rear doors of the auditorium burst open.

Harrington, Sarah, the Police Chief, and Carlos the mechanic ran into the room, flanked by four uniformed officers. Harrington’s face was bandaged, his suit ruined, looking utterly deranged.

"Arrest her!" Harrington screamed, pointing at me. "She assaulted a police officer!"

The officers rushed down the aisle, drawing their tasers.

The parents in the crowd began to panic, shrinking back from the armed police.

I was out of time. They were going to drag me away, and the Mayor would spin the story.

But then, a loud, piercing feedback screech echoed through the auditorium's sound system.

Everyone covered their ears.

Up in the sound booth, overlooking the entire auditorium, stood Eleanor Brooks. She had slipped away while I made my dramatic entrance.

Eleanor wasn't just a secretary. She had run the school's AV equipment for thirty years.

She flipped a switch on the massive soundboard, patching the projection screen directly to her laptop.

Suddenly, the graph on the screen vanished.

In its place, a massive video played.

It was the video of Harrington, the Mayor, and the Chief discussing the theft of the school land.

“The electronics are just a front,” Harrington’s voice boomed through the massive stadium speakers. “The real money is in the property deeds.”

The Chief froze in the aisle. The Mayor dropped his microphone in sheer terror.

"How?" Harrington gasped, staring at the screen. "I have the SD card!"

He pulled the tiny black square from his pocket.

From the sound booth, Eleanor leaned into the PA microphone. Her voice echoed like the wrath of God across the auditorium.

"You have a memory card, Daniel," Eleanor announced. "But you clearly didn't know Mark very well. An auditor never keeps just one backup. He emailed a copy of that video to my encrypted server the night he died. I just needed the password. And Sophie remembered it."

I looked down at my nine-year-old daughter.

"Daddy's favorite color," Sophie whispered to me, a small, brave smile on her face.

The auditorium erupted in absolute chaos. Parents began screaming, pulling out their phones, recording the video, recording the Mayor, recording the police. Local journalists in the front row began snapping photos frantically.

"Shut it off!" the Chief roared, pulling his service weapon and aiming it up at the sound booth.

"Put the gun down, Chief!" a booming voice commanded from the side entrance.

Ten officers in tactical gear swarmed into the auditorium, assault rifles raised. But their uniforms weren't local blue.

They were State Police.

Maria had called them from my phone during the car chase, while I was planning the distraction.

The State Police surrounded Harrington, Sarah, the Chief, and the Mayor.

"Daniel Harrington, you are under arrest for fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy to commit murder," the State Police Captain announced.

Harrington dropped to his knees, staring at the screen in absolute defeat. Sarah burst into tears, dropping her face into her hands.

The nightmare was finally over.

But as the police slapped cuffs on the corrupt officials, Carlos the mechanic slowly backed away toward the emergency exit, unnoticed in the chaos.

He pushed the door open to escape.

But standing on the other side of the door was Mateo.
