THE DEAD WOMAN’S SECRET / Chapter 6 / 8

Chapter 7 - THE HOSPITAL BRACELET

Pier 42 was a rotting, corrugated steel warehouse jutting out into the black, freezing waters of Lake Michigan.

The rain had turned into a torrential downpour, masking the sound of Luca's stolen sedan as we cut the headlights and rolled to a stop behind a stack of rusted shipping containers.

Isabella sat in the passenger seat, her face pale but hardened into a mask of pure vengeance. My grandmother had insisted on coming. "If I'm going to die tonight," Rose had told Luca in the car, "I'm dying looking that bastard in the eye."

We stepped out into the freezing rain. Luca popped the trunk, pulling out a heavy tactical shotgun he had stored there for emergencies. He racked a shell into the chamber, the metallic clack slicing through the sound of the storm.

"There are six guards outside," Isabella whispered, pointing through the rain. "Daniel is inside with Victor and your mother. Victor won't wait long. He's paranoid."

Luca looked at me. "Emma, you and Rose stay by the car. If we aren't back in ten minutes, drive away and take the microfilm to the Commission."

Before I could argue, Isabella stepped forward.

"I'll get us inside," she said coldly.

Luca nodded. He gripped his shotgun, melting into the shadows of the shipping containers, moving with the lethal grace of an apex predator.

Isabella walked directly into the harsh glare of the security floodlights, her hands raised slightly.

"It's me!" she yelled over the rain.

Two of the guards stepped out from the warehouse awning, lowering their rifles when they recognized the boss's daughter.

"Miss Romano," one of the men grunted. "Where is De Luca? Did you get the drawing?"

"He's dead," Isabella lied smoothly, walking closer. "I shot him at the train station. I need to see my father."

As the guards relaxed entirely, lowering their weapons, Luca emerged from the blind spot behind them like a ghost. He didn't use the gun. He used the heavy wooden stock of the shotgun, driving it into the back of the first guard's skull, then pivoting instantly to strike the second man in the throat.

Both men dropped silently to the wet concrete.

Isabella didn't even blink. She picked up one of their discarded rifles, checking the magazine.

I watched from the shadows, gripping my small revolver, my grandmother standing stoically beside me. We crept forward, following Luca and Isabella to the heavy side door of the warehouse.

Luca pressed his ear to the rusted metal. He held up three fingers. Then two.

Then he kicked the door open with a deafening crash.

We spilled into the cavernous, dimly lit warehouse. Stacks of wooden crates created a maze of shadows. In the center of the room, under a single hanging industrial lightbulb, sat Elena. She was tied to a wooden chair, her head slumped forward, exhausted but alive.

Victor stood a few feet away, smoking a cigar, while Daniel paced nervously holding an assault rifle.

"Victor!" Luca roared, stepping into the light, his shotgun aimed squarely at his uncle's chest.

Victor didn't jump. He didn't scramble for cover. He slowly took the cigar from his mouth and exhaled a long plume of gray smoke.

"Right on time, Nephew," Victor smiled.

Daniel instantly raised his rifle, but before he could pull the trigger, Isabella stepped out from behind a stack of crates, her weapon leveled directly at Daniel's head.

"Drop it, Daniel," Isabella commanded, her voice ringing with lethal authority. "Or I put a bullet between your eyes."

Victor’s smile vanished. He stared at his daughter, genuine shock registering on his face for the first time all night.

"Isabella? What are you doing?" Victor demanded. "Shoot him!"

"I know about the rosary, Father," Isabella spat, tears mixing with the rain on her face. "I know you murdered my mother."

Victor’s face hardened into a mask of pure, ugly rage. "She was weak! She was going to ruin everything I built for us!"

"You built an empire on blood and lies," Luca stepped forward, his finger tightening on the trigger. "It's over, Victor. I have the ledger. I have the microfilm. The Commission will hunt you to the ends of the earth."

Victor chuckled, a dark, scraping sound that sent chills down my spine.

"You think you've won, Luca?" Victor asked. He reached into his tailored coat pocket and pulled out something small and white. He tossed it onto the concrete floor.

It landed near my boots.

I looked down.

It was a faded plastic hospital identification bracelet. The name printed on it was Rose Ellis.

My blood ran cold.

"Did you really think you successfully hid for twenty-five years, Rose?" Victor called out into the shadows, knowing we were there. "Did you think I couldn't find a maid? I knew exactly where you were every single day. I kept you alive because you were holding my insurance policy."

Victor pulled a detonator from his other pocket. His thumb hovered over the red button.

"This warehouse is wired with enough C4 to level a city block," Victor said calmly. "I drop my thumb, and we all burn together."

Luca froze. Isabella lowered her rifle slightly.

"Put the gun down, Luca," Victor ordered. "Kick it over to Daniel. Or your mother, your little waitress, and her beloved grandmother turn to ash."

Luca looked at Elena, tied to the chair. He looked at me, standing terrified in the shadows. He slowly lowered the shotgun, placing it on the concrete floor, and kicked it away.

Victor smiled triumphantly. "Daniel, kill the women. Leave Luca for me."

Daniel raised his rifle, aiming directly at Elena's chest.

But Daniel never pulled the trigger.

A single, deafening gunshot rang out through the warehouse.

Daniel's eyes went wide. He dropped the rifle, clutching his chest as blood bloomed across his shirt, and collapsed to the floor.

Everyone turned toward the shadows.

My grandmother stood there, her frail hands gripping her old Smith & Wesson revolver perfectly steady, smoke curling from the barrel.

"I always was a good shot," Rose said coldly.

In the fraction of a second that Victor stared in shock at his dying security chief, Luca lunged.
