Chapter 3 - THE GOLD POCKET WATCH

The dining room erupted into chaos.

Guests began whispering frantically, some standing up, others pushing their chairs away from the table as if the mahogany wood had suddenly caught fire.

"That's a lie!" Vanessa shrieked, pointing a manicured finger at the eight-year-old boy. "He's a child! He has an overactive imagination. Adrian, you know he still has nightmares about his mother's passing!"

Adrian didn't look at Vanessa. He didn't even acknowledge her scream.

He was entirely focused on his son. He gently took the heavy gold watch from Leo's small palm. The metal was scratched, and the glass face was cracked straight down the middle, stopping the hands at exactly 9:45.

"Leo," Adrian said, his voice incredibly steady and impossibly gentle. "Look at me, buddy."

Leo tore his fearful gaze away from Vanessa and looked into his father’s eyes.

"I'm not mad," Adrian promised softly. "Nobody is going to send you anywhere. You are safe. Do you understand?"

Leo nodded, a single tear slipping down his cheek.

"Good," Adrian said. "Now, tell me exactly what you saw the night Grandpa died."

The room fell so silent you could hear the grandfather clock ticking in the hallway.

Leo sniffled, wiping his nose with the sleeve of his pajama top. "I couldn't sleep that night either. I went downstairs to get milk. I heard Grandpa arguing with someone in his study."

"Who was he arguing with?" Adrian asked.

"Vanessa," Leo whispered. "She was crying. Grandpa told her to take the ticket and never come back. He said she was a parasite."

Vanessa let out a choked, hysterical laugh. "I was in Europe that month! Adrian, you can check my passport! This is insane!"

I stepped out from behind Victoria’s chair.

"If she was in Europe," I said clearly, addressing the entire room, "then how did she know about the ticket? Adrian never mentioned it to her. She recognized it the moment Richard put it on the table."

Arthur Bellini slammed his hand against the table. "Margaret, you are a paid servant! Close your mouth before I have you thrown out into the rain!"

"You don't give orders in my house, Arthur," Victoria commanded, standing up from her chair for the first time all evening.

Despite her seventy-eight years, Victoria commanded the room like a general. She walked around the table, her steps slow but purposeful, until she reached Adrian and Leo.

She knelt beside her grandson.

"Leo, my brave boy," Victoria said, brushing his hair back. "What happened next?"

"Grandpa grabbed his chest," Leo said, his voice trembling. "He fell down. He was trying to reach his medicine on the desk. But Vanessa stood in front of it. She didn't help him. She just watched."

The horrifying truth hung in the air, suffocating and heavy.

Vanessa hadn't murdered Thomas with a weapon. She had murdered him with inaction.

"Then she took his watch," Leo finished, pointing at the gold object in his father's hand. "She saw me in the hallway. She grabbed my arm and told me if I said anything, she would make sure Daddy disappeared just like Grandpa."

Adrian slowly stood up.

He handed Leo to me. "Margaret, take Leo to the kitchen. Lock the door."

"Yes, Mr. Moretti," I said, scooping the boy into my arms. He buried his face in my shoulder, shaking like a leaf.

I didn't leave the room entirely. I backed away toward the swinging kitchen doors, keeping myself between Leo and Vanessa.

Adrian turned around to face his fiancée.

The man who had been charming, successful, and blindly in love just twenty minutes ago was gone. In his place was a son who had just discovered the woman sleeping in his bed had watched his father die.

"You let him die," Adrian whispered, his voice cracking with a grief so profound it made my own chest ache. "Why?"

Vanessa backed up until she hit the edge of the dining table. She looked around the room, realizing she was entirely trapped. Even Richard had stepped away from her.

"Because he was going to ruin everything!" Vanessa finally snapped, her tears turning to venom. "You think your father was a saint, Adrian? You think this family's wealth was built on hard work? Thomas was paying Arthur and me to stay quiet!"

Arthur Bellini lunged forward. "Shut your mouth, Vanessa!"

"No!" Vanessa screamed, holding her ground. "I'm not going down for this alone! Thomas wasn't sending me to Montreal to punish me. He was sending me away because he found out what Arthur and Richard were doing to the family trust!"

Richard went completely pale. "She's lying."

"Am I?" Vanessa challenged, grabbing her cream-colored folder from the table. "You two have been embezzling millions from Victoria’s accounts for a decade. When Thomas figured it out, Arthur used me as blackmail. Arthur told Thomas that if he went to the police, Arthur would reveal the truth about my mother."

Adrian frowned, deeply confused. "What does your mother have to do with this?"

Vanessa looked at Victoria, a cruel, bitter smile twisting her lips.

"Because Victoria isn't the only woman Thomas loved," Vanessa spat.

Victoria didn't flinch. She simply stared at the younger woman.

"My mother was Thomas's mistress," Vanessa declared, the words echoing off the mahogany walls. "And I am your half-sister, Adrian."

A stunned, horrified silence gripped the thirty-six guests.

Adrian staggered backward as if he had been physically struck. He looked at his mother, expecting her to deny it. Expecting her to fall apart.

But Victoria just adjusted her glasses.

"I know," Victoria said calmly.

The entire room froze.

Even Vanessa looked shocked. "You... you knew?"

"I knew about your mother, Vanessa," Victoria replied, her voice steady and completely devoid of shock. "And I knew Thomas was paying for your upkeep through Arthur. What I didn't know was that you were sociopathic enough to sleep with your own half-brother just to secure your inheritance."

Vanessa sneered, a desperate, cornered animal. "It doesn't matter what you knew, old woman. Because the authorization form is already signed."

She snatched the cream-colored document from the table and held it up.

"This isn't an authorization for a care facility," Vanessa laughed maliciously. "I slipped a power of attorney clause into the fine print. With this signature, Richard and I have full control of the Moretti estate. We don't need you anymore."

Vanessa turned to walk out of the room, victorious.

"You're right," I spoke up from the kitchen doorway.

Vanessa stopped, turning to glare at me.

I reached into my handbag with my free hand, balancing Leo on my hip. I pulled out a heavy, intricately carved wooden box.

"Mrs. Moretti's signature gives you control over the estate," I said clearly. "But it doesn't give you control over the Bellini properties."

Arthur Bellini's face drained of blood. "Where did you get that box?"

I looked directly at Arthur.

"I found it in the sewing room, Mr. Bellini," I said. "Right before Richard's movers arrived. Mrs. Moretti asked me to secure it. And inside this box isn't a secret about Thomas."

I popped the latch open with my thumb.

"It's a secret about you, Arthur. And what you really did to Vanessa's mother."
