Chapter 2 - THE MAN IN THE SHADOWS

The silence in the grand dining room was so absolute I could hear the faint clinking of ice melting in someone’s cocktail glass.
Luca Moretti stood frozen. His dark eyes shifted from my trembling hand toward the man standing by the champagne tower. The man who had introduced him to Vanessa. The man who had just slipped a gold wedding band into his tailored tuxedo pocket.
His name was Julian Rossi. He was Luca’s closest business associate, the man who handled the Moretti family’s legitimate real estate holdings.
Julian’s face was perfectly composed, but a bead of sweat traced the line of his jaw. He forced a chuckle, the sound harsh and artificial in the quiet room.
“Luca, listen to yourself,” Julian said, taking a slow step forward. “You’re taking the word of a disgruntled housemaid over your fiancé and your oldest friend? She’s clearly trying to extort Vanessa.”
Vanessa eagerly jumped on the lifeline. “Yes! Exactly! She demanded ten thousand dollars from me in the hallway. When I said no, she made up this insane lie.”
My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. “That’s not true! I never asked for money.”
Luca didn’t look at me. He didn’t look at Vanessa. His gaze was locked onto Julian like a predator zeroing in on a threat.
“Julian,” Luca said, his voice dropping to a terrifying, quiet register. “Take your left hand out of your pocket.”
Julian stopped walking. The polite smile on his face began to fracture. “Don’t do this, Luca. You’re embarrassing Vanessa in front of the guests.”
“I won’t ask a second time.”
The tension in the room snapped tight. Two of Luca’s men, massive figures in identical black suits who had been lingering near the exit, silently moved to block the dining room doors. The guests began to murmur, backing away, sensing the sudden shift in the air. This was no longer a pre-wedding celebration. It was a trap.
Julian slowly pulled his hand from his pocket. It was empty.
“See?” Julian said, spreading his fingers. “Nothing.”
But Luca wasn’t looking at the palm of Julian’s hand. He stepped closer, grabbing Julian’s wrist with blinding speed. He flipped Julian’s hand over and stared at the base of his ring finger.
Even from where I stood, I could see it. A pale, distinct indentation wrapped around the base of Julian’s finger. The unmistakable mark of a ring worn every day for over a year, hastily removed only seconds ago.
Luca’s jaw clenched. He dropped Julian’s wrist as if it burned him.
“You son of a bitch,” Luca whispered.
Julian’s eyes darted toward the exit. In a split second, the polished businessman vanished, replaced by a cornered animal. He shoved the heavy champagne table toward Luca. Glasses shattered against the marble floor, spraying crystal and expensive wine everywhere. Guests screamed.
“Get him!” Luca roared.
Julian bolted toward the kitchen doors, but he didn’t make it three steps. Luca’s men tackled him to the floor, pinning him down amidst the broken glass. Julian thrashed, shouting curses, but the guards hauled him up by his collar, dragging him backward.
Vanessa screamed, rushing forward, but Luca threw out an arm, stopping her in her tracks.
“Don’t touch him!” Vanessa cried out, her voice cracking with pure panic. “Leave him alone, Luca, please!”
Luca slowly turned to his fiancée. The beautiful ivory gown—the eighty-thousand-dollar dress I had fixed in a cheap hotel room fourteen months ago—now looked like a costume.
“You just begged for his life,” Luca said, his voice eerily calm. “You didn’t even try to deny it.”
Vanessa covered her mouth with her trembling hands, tears finally spilling over her cheeks. The haughty, cruel woman who had humiliated me minutes ago was completely gone. In her place was a terrified girl realizing her entire world had just collapsed.
“Luca, I can explain,” she sobbed, reaching for his jacket.
He stepped back, refusing to let her touch him. “Save it for the study.”
He gestured to his guards. “Take them both downstairs. Clear the guests out. Tell them the wedding is permanently canceled.”
As the guards dragged Julian past me, something small and metallic slipped from his torn suit pocket. It hit the carpet with a soft thud, rolling until it stopped against the toe of my black work shoe.
In the chaos of crying guests and shouting guards, no one noticed it. No one except me.
I knelt down, pretending to pick up a piece of broken glass. Instead, my fingers closed around the object. It was a heavy, antique silver pocket watch.
But it wasn’t just any watch. I recognized the intricate engraving of a wolf on the casing. I had polished it every Tuesday for the past seven months. It belonged to Luca Moretti. He kept it locked inside the glass display case in his private bedroom.
Why did Julian have it in his pocket?

I stood up, gripping the watch tightly in my palm. Before I could process what it meant, Luca’s dark eyes locked onto mine. The fury in his expression softened for a fraction of a second, replaced by something deep and unreadable.
“Sophie,” he commanded. “Come with me.”
