Chapter 9 - THE PERFECT FIT

One year later.
The brass bell above the door of Sophie’s Atelier jingled softly as the afternoon sun poured through the large storefront windows in downtown Chicago.
I stood back, a tape measure draped around my neck, admiring the ivory silk gown displayed on the main mannequin. It was my own original design. No stolen codes in the lining, no cruel brides demanding the impossible. Just pure, beautiful craftsmanship.
The door opened wider, and a small boy rushed in, wearing a tiny, perfectly tailored suit that I had made for him.
“Auntie Sophie!” Leo yelled, launching himself at my legs with reckless abandon.
I laughed, scooping the six-year-old up into my arms. “Look at you! You look so handsome! Are you ready for the big day?”
“Uncle Luca tied my tie!” Leo said proudly, pointing to the slightly crooked bowtie at his collar.
The bell jingled again, and Luca walked in.
He looked absolutely breathtaking in a custom black tuxedo. His dark eyes scanned the bright, bustling shop before landing on me. A slow, devastatingly handsome smile spread across his face.
“He wouldn’t sit still,” Luca said, walking over and wrapping his arm around my waist, pulling me close for a warm, lingering kiss. “I think he’s excited.”
“I’m excited for the cake!” Leo announced, wiggling down from my arms to go inspect a display of colorful silk ribbons near the window.
I leaned my head against Luca’s chest, listening to the steady, comforting beat of his heart.
It had been a year of profound healing. Luca had legally adopted Leo, officially making him the heir to the Moretti family. But Luca was changing the family business, moving aggressively away from the darkness of the past and investing heavily in legitimate real estate and community charity work.
He wanted Leo to inherit an empire of light, not shadows.
“Are you ready?” Luca asked softly, kissing the top of my head.
“Almost,” I said, stepping out of his embrace.
I walked over to the back room and pulled out a heavy garment bag. I unzipped it, revealing the dress I had been working on in secret for six months.
It wasn’t a replica of Vanessa’s dress. It was entirely unique. Elegant, flowing, and perfectly tailored to fit me.
I ran my fingers along the left sleeve. Inside the lining, carefully hidden from the world, were two tiny blue stitches.
Not for a repair this time.
For luck.
“It’s beautiful,” Luca said, coming up behind me and wrapping his arms around my shoulders. He looked at our reflection in the full-length mirror. The former housemaid and the man who used to terrify the city.
Now, we were just a family.
“Thank you,” I whispered, turning in his arms to look up at him.
“For what?”
“For noticing the stitches a year ago.”
Luca smiled, brushing a stray lock of hair behind my ear, his touch as gentle as it had been in the panic room.
“I notice everything about you, Sophie. I always will.”
The church bells down the street began to ring, signaling five o'clock.
Leo ran back over, tugging urgently on Luca’s trousers. “Come on! The guests are waiting!”
Luca chuckled, picking Leo up with one arm and offering me his other.
I took his arm, my heart full and overflowing with a joy I had never thought possible.
I used to fix broken things for other people. I used to repair tears in fabrics that didn't belong to me, for lives I was entirely invisible in.
May you like
But as I walked out of my shop, holding the hand of the man I loved, with our little boy laughing brightly beside us, I knew I didn't need to fix anything ever again.
Because my life was finally a perfect fit.
