Chapter 3 - THE STOLEN HEIR

The room went entirely, suffocatingly silent.
Anna dropped her phone. It clattered against the hardwood floor, but no one moved to pick it up.
"Pregnant?" I repeated, the word tasting like ash in my mouth.
My mind violently rewound to the weeks before our wedding. Evelyn had been glowing. She had complained of being tired, of sudden waves of nausea, but she had dismissed it as wedding stress. She had been carrying my child. Our child.
"I was going to tell you at the reception," Evelyn sobbed, her frail body shaking as the memories overwhelmed her. "I wanted to surprise you. But I went into the study to get my vows, and I heard Marcus and Bianca talking. I heard them discussing the estate ledgers. Marcus had been siphoning millions from your trust, Arthur. Bianca found out, and instead of telling you, she let him blackmail her into helping him steal the rest."
Bianca buried her face in her hands, her weeping growing louder, more pathetic.
"I confronted them," Evelyn continued, her voice growing hoarse. "Marcus panicked. He dragged me back here. He threw me into the old priest hole. I screamed, Arthur. I screamed for days. But the walls are lined with lead and brick. No one could hear me."
I pulled her closer, my own tears blinding me. "How did you survive? How are you alive?"
"Bianca," Evelyn whispered bitterly. "She was too cowardly to kill me, but too terrified of Marcus to set me free. She dropped food and water bottles through the small iron ventilation grate in the baseboards. Just enough to keep me breathing."
I glared at my sister, feeling a disgust so profound it made my stomach turn.
"And the baby?" I asked, my voice dropping to a terrified whisper. "Evelyn... what happened to our baby?"
Evelyn grabbed the collar of my shirt, her eyes wide with a desperate, feral panic. "Seven months into the darkness, I went into labor. I was alone. It was so cold. When the baby came... I wrapped him in pieces of my wedding veil."
She choked on a sob, her head falling against my chest.
"Marcus came that night. He opened the grate. He told me that if I didn't hand the baby over, he would stop Bianca from bringing water, and we would both die in the dark. He said he would take the child and give him a good life. I had no choice, Arthur. I had to let him take my son to save him."
My son.
I had a son.
Suddenly, my blood ran cold. The pieces of a twisted, horrifying puzzle slammed together in my mind with sickening clarity.
Two and a half years ago, Bianca had abruptly announced she was adopting a child. A private, closed adoption facilitated by Marcus’s legal firm. She had brought home a beautiful, quiet little boy with dark hair and striking green eyes. Evelyn’s eyes.
I had spent the last two years playing the role of the doting uncle. I had bought him toys. I had carried him on my shoulders. I had read him bedtime stories.
"Leo," I whispered.
Bianca flinched as if I had struck her.
I stood up, gently resting Evelyn against the side of the bed. I crossed the room in three long strides, grabbed Bianca by the collar of her designer blouse, and hauled her to her feet.
"Is Leo my son?!" I roared, slamming her back against the wall.
Bianca nodded frantically, tears streaming down her face. "Yes! Yes, Arthur! Marcus forced me to adopt him legally so the boy would remain under his financial control! If you and Evelyn died without an heir, the estate went to me, and Marcus controlled my accounts! It was the only way he could steal the family fortune!"
"You raised my son while his mother starved beneath your feet?!" I screamed, my vision going red.
I threw her aside. She crumpled to the floor, weeping.
I turned back to Evelyn. "I’m going to get him. I’m going to get our son, and then I am going to kill Marcus."
"Arthur, wait!" Anna shouted from the doorway.
The maid was staring at her phone, which she had finally picked up from the floor. Her face was pale.
"What is it?" I demanded.
Anna swallowed hard. "Mr. Marcus arrived at the estate ten minutes ago for his weekly meeting with your sister. I saw his car pull up while I was vacuuming. He usually goes straight to the nursery to see Leo before coming to the main office."
Panic seized my chest.
Marcus was here. Inside the house. With my son.
I sprinted out of the bridal suite, leaving Anna to guard Evelyn.
I tore down the grand hallway, taking the marble stairs two at a time. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. I didn't care about the estate, the money, or the betrayals. I only cared about the little boy I had unknowingly loved as a nephew, who was actually my own flesh and blood.
I reached the heavy oak doors of the nursery. They were slightly ajar.
I slammed them open.
"Leo!" I yelled.
But the room was dead silent.
The toy blocks were scattered on the rug. The little wooden rocking horse sat motionless. The crib was empty.
And the large bay window leading out to the balcony was wide open, the sheer curtains billowing in the afternoon wind.
I rushed to the window.
Resting on the sill was a small, polished silver baby rattle.
Marcus’s calling card.

He had been watching the internal security cameras from his phone. He knew the bridal suite panel had been opened.
And he had already taken my son.
