Chapter 8 - THE STANDOFF ON THE DOCK

The smell of wet ash and burned cedar hung thick in the air as Vanessa’s threat settled over us. She stood on the muddy banks of the lake, her white linen dress stained with soot, demanding I hand over the only evidence that could destroy her.

She thought the threat of taking Leo would break me. She thought I was just a grandmother desperate to keep her family together at any cost.

She didn't know I had already made a choice.

"You aren't taking Leo anywhere," I said, my voice dead calm. I didn't hand her the envelope. Instead, I carefully folded Thomas’s letter and the photographs, sliding them into the deep pocket of my coat alongside the silver bracelet.

"I'm his mother," Vanessa spat, taking a step toward the driveway. "I have legal custody."

"Not when you're in federal prison for racketeering," I replied.

Vanessa laughed, a harsh, grating sound. She looked at Sergeant Miller, who was leaning against a police cruiser. "Arrest her, Miller. She’s stealing corporate property and resisting a medical hold."

Miller stepped forward, pulling a pair of zip-tie handcuffs from his belt. "I told you to make this easy, Ruth."

"Sergeant Miller," I said, raising my hand to stop him. "Before you put those on me, you should know that I found the Zurich flight itinerary in Vanessa's suitcase. The one with Julian Hayes. Your boss, Marcus, might not care about that. But I’m guessing you do, considering Julian is the man who embezzled your pension fund three years ago."

Miller stopped dead in his tracks. His eyes darted from me to Vanessa. "What did you say?"

"She's lying!" Vanessa shrieked, her composed facade finally shattering. "She's trying to confuse you!"

"Look in the left pocket of her designer clutch," I instructed Miller.

Answer One, Open Two.

Miller wasn't just corrupt; he was working for Marcus to recoup his stolen money. Vanessa had promised Miller a cut of the resort profits to pay him back. But she was secretly planning to run away with the very man who had stolen the money in the first place.

Miller stepped toward Vanessa. "Open the bag, Vanessa."

"No!" She yanked the bag away.

That was all the confirmation he needed. Miller ripped the clutch from her hands, popping the clasp. He dug his fingers inside and pulled out a folded piece of paper. It was a photocopy of the Swiss itinerary.

Miller’s face turned purple with rage. "You lying bitch," he hissed. "You were going to run with Hayes and leave me holding the bag for the arson?"

"Arson?" Daniel spoke up for the first time. His voice was cracked, raw with shock. He looked at Vanessa, then at Miller. "You burned down my father's boathouse?"

A massive Reversal shifted the power dynamic on the lawn. The corrupt alliance had cannibalized itself.

Vanessa panicked. With Miller turning on her and the investors gone, her entire scheme had collapsed. She spun around and sprinted up the wet grass, heading straight for my Volvo. Heading for Leo.

"No!" Daniel screamed, lunging after her.

I didn't run. I reached into my coat and pulled out my phone. I hit a single button.

Suddenly, the front gates of the estate groaned open. Headlights blinded the driveway. Not police cruisers. Three black, unmarked SUVs tore up the gravel, boxing in my Volvo.

Four men in tactical gear with heavy vests stepped out. Across the back of their vests were three bright yellow letters: FBI.

Vanessa stopped running, sliding in the mud, staring in horror at the federal agents.

Daniel caught up to her, breathing heavily. He didn't look at his wife. He walked straight past her, going directly to my Volvo. He unlocked the door and pulled Leo into his arms, burying his face in his son's neck, sobbing violently.

An agent in a suit approached me, flashing a badge. "Mrs. Vance? Special Agent Carter. We received the encrypted files you sent from the boathouse computer earlier this evening."

I nodded. "I forwarded the private investigator’s entire digital file right before the party started."

Vanessa turned to me, her eyes wild, her hair plastered to her face with sweat and ash. She realized she had been outplayed from the very beginning.

"You think you've won?" she screamed, thrashing as an agent grabbed her arms to cuff her. "Tell them, Daniel! Tell them what you did! Tell them about the hit-and-run! If I go down, your precious son is going to federal prison, Ruth!"

She smiled, blood on her teeth from biting her lip, a final, venomous strike to ruin my family.

May you like

But Daniel didn't cower. He stood up, holding Leo tightly, and looked his wife dead in the eye.

"There was no hit-and-run, Vanessa," Daniel said quietly.
