Chapter 5 - The Stolen Sanctuary

I stared at the mortgage default notice resting on the floor, the stark black ink searing itself into my brain.

Property Address: 442 Elm Street, Oak Park, Illinois. Amount Past Due: $145,000. Notice of Intent to Foreclose.

My childhood home. The small, brick house with the overgrown lilac bushes in the front yard. The house where my mother had taught me how to thread a needle at the kitchen table. The house I had refused to sell after she died, keeping it rented out to a nice young family, intending to give it to Charlotte when she graduated college.

I fell to my knees on the runway, ignoring the collective gasp from the audience. I snatched the paper from the floor.

"You mortgaged Elm Street?" I choked out, looking up at James. The edges of my vision were going dark. "That house was fully paid off. My parents spent thirty years paying off that mortgage. It was in my name alone!"

James didn't flinch. He looked down at me with absolute contempt.

"It was in our name, Emily," James corrected smoothly. "Remember when we updated our estate planning five years ago? I had my attorneys slip a quitclaim deed into the paperwork. You signed half the ownership over to me. It made it incredibly easy to use the house as collateral for the business loans."

"You used my mother's house to fund your mistress's company?" I screamed, the sound tearing from my throat with a feral intensity I didn't know I possessed.

"I used an underperforming real estate asset to generate capital!" James shouted back, finally losing his cool. He pointed a finger at me. "That's why I'm the CEO and you're just a seamstress! You let sentimentality blind you. It's a brick box in the suburbs, Emily! Grow up!"

"Dad, stop it!" Charlotte yelled, dropping to her knees beside me and wrapping her arms around my shoulders. She glared up at her father, tears streaming down her young face. "You're a monster! Grandma hated you! She always knew you were using Mom!"

James's face twisted into something ugly and unrecognizable. He took a menacing step toward his own daughter.

"Shut your mouth, Charlotte," James snarled, his voice low and dangerous. "I pay for your private school. I pay for your horseback riding lessons. I put the food in your mouth. You will speak to me with respect, or I will cut you off so fast your head will spin."

The entire ballroom recoiled.

Even Vanessa stepped back, looking horrified. She may have been a ruthless opportunist, but watching a father threaten to bankrupt his own fourteen-year-old daughter on a public stage was a line even she hadn't anticipated crossing.

Eleanor Vance, the billionaire investor, had heard enough.

"Security," Eleanor barked, pointing her diamond-ringed finger at James. "Remove this man from the Palmer House. Now."

"You can't remove me!" James laughed frantically, running a hand through his perfectly styled hair. "I rented this ballroom! I am the CEO of Whitmore Bridal!"

"Not anymore," Eleanor said, her voice dropping to a lethal calm. "As the majority debt holder of Whitmore Bridal, I am calling in my loans. All forty-two million dollars of them. Effective immediately. You are in breach of the morality clause in our funding contract, James. You have until Monday to pay me back in full, or I am seizing every asset you have."

James turned pale. "Eleanor, you can't do that. The new LLC... Project Rose... it's shielded! It's in Vanessa's name!"

Eleanor smiled, a terrifying, predatory expression. "Oh, James. Did you really think you were the smartest person in the room? Do you know who owns the manufacturing warehouses you bought for Vanessa's little side project?"

James blinked, confused. "I bought them through a commercial broker."

"You bought them from a holding company," Eleanor corrected. "A holding company owned by my venture capital firm. I saw you moving the money six months ago. I knew you were embezzling. I just needed you to admit it on the record."

She gestured to the dozens of cell phones recording the confrontation. "And tonight, you gave me a full confession, in front of four hundred witnesses. I don't just own Whitmore Bridal now, James. I own Vanessa's company, too. Both of you are penniless."

Vanessa let out a sharp cry of despair. She looked at James, her eyes wide with betrayal. "You said we were protected! You said Eleanor Vance was a dinosaur who didn't understand modern corporate structure!"

"Shut up, Vanessa!" James roared, panicking entirely.

He looked around the room, realizing he was surrounded by enemies. The investors were disgusted. The fashion editors were already drafting the scandal of the decade. His empire had evaporated in less than twenty minutes.

He looked down at me, still kneeling on the floor with Charlotte. A desperate, manic light flickered in his eyes.

"Emily," he pleaded, his voice suddenly sickeningly sweet. He dropped to his knees in front of me, reaching for my hands. "Emily, please. We can fix this. You're a brilliant designer. We'll start over. Just you and me. Like the old days in the little shop. Tell Eleanor you'll stay on as head designer. She'll keep the company open if you're attached. We're a team, remember?"

I stared at his outstretched hands. The hands that had slipped corporate theft into my mother's dying paperwork. The hands that had given my mother's jewelry to his mistress.

I felt a sudden weight in my lap.

Charlotte had unzipped her small, black velvet backpack. She reached inside and pulled out a heavy, dark green velvet pouch.

"Mom," Charlotte whispered, pushing the pouch into my hands. "Grandma told me to give this to you when you finally saw who he really was."
