Chapter 7 - THE FROZEN ASSETS

“Good morning, Ben,” Sarah said smoothly, lifting her coffee cup in a mock toast. “It’s been a long time since your wedding. Too bad we’re meeting under these circumstances.”

Ben ignored Sarah, his gaze locking onto me like a cornered animal. “Claire, what have you done? The bank says my business account is under a federal fraud freeze. Do you have any idea what this does to my reputation? I have client meetings today!”

“Clients who are probably paying for your lifestyle with money you embezzled from the firm and our personal accounts?” I asked, taking a slow sip of my coffee.

Ben’s mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. He took a step toward me, his voice dropping into the low, intimidating register he had occasionally used over the years when he wanted me to back down in arguments.

“You’re hysterical,” Ben hissed, pointing a finger at me. “You saw me with Jessica last night, you threw a temper tantrum like a child, and now you’re trying to burn down my entire career out of spite. Call your cousin off right now, or I swear to God I will file for sole custody and leave you with nothing.”

He had played that card out of habit. For twenty-one years, whenever I pushed back too hard, he invoked the threat of financial ruin or legal isolation, knowing I hated conflict.

He didn’t realize the board had changed.

Before I could even open my mouth, Lily stepped directly between her father and me.

She wasn’t crying anymore. Her face was pale, but her jaw was set with a cold, terrifying fury that looked terrifyingly like Ben’s.

“Don’t you dare threaten my mom,” Lily said. Her voice was ice.

Ben blinked, stunned. “Lily? Sweetheart, what are you talking about? Your mother is out of her mind—she’s freezing our assets, she’s trying to ruin everything I built for us—”

“For us?” Lily screamed, the mask finally shattering completely. She grabbed the printed bank statement off the table and shoved it against Ben’s chest. “You emptied my college fund! You took the money Grandma and Grandpa saved for my education and you spent it on an apartment for your girlfriend! You used me, Dad! You made me look like an idiot shopping for a ring with the woman who was stealing our lives!”

Ben stared down at the paper, his hands trembling as he realized the game was up.

“Lily, let me explain,” Ben stammered, his voice pitching upward into desperation. “The market... there were investments... I was going to replace it—”

“Shut up,” Lily whispered. She backed away from him as if he were a stranger carrying a disease. “Just... get out of our house.”

Ben looked from Lily to me, desperate for an ally, a crack in our armor. But he found nothing. Sarah sat quietly in the background, making a neat little note on her legal pad.

“You’re making a huge mistake, Claire,” Ben snarled, his mask of charm shredding entirely as he backed toward the front door. “You think you win? The LLC is in my name. The debt is tied to your credit, too. You’re going down with me.”

“My cousin already audited the LLC, Ben,” I said quietly, walking toward the hallway to watch him leave. “And she found the offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands under Jessica Miller’s maiden name. The FBI’s white-collar division received an anonymous tip package this morning at 7:00 AM.”

Ben froze with his hand on the doorknob.

He looked back at me, finally seeing the woman he had spent twenty-one years ignoring. Not a simple housewife who wore bedsheets on Halloween, but the person who had quietly, systematically taken his entire world apart before breakfast.

Without another word, Ben pulled the door open, stepped out onto the porch, and slammed it behind him.
