Chapter 6 - THE CHASE IN THE RAIN

“Stop her!” Julian shouted.
But Beatrice was already out the door.
Rain had started pouring down outside, washing over the massive stone steps of the estate.
I didn’t think. I just ran.
I bolted out the front door, my black maid’s uniform instantly soaked by the freezing rain.
Beatrice was sprinting toward her silver Mercedes parked in the circular driveway. She had her keys in her hand.
“Beatrice!” I yelled.
She ignored me. She reached the car door and ripped it open.
I tackled her.
We both hit the wet gravel hard.
She screamed, clawing at my face, her perfect manicured nails scratching my cheek.
“Get off me, you piece of trash!” she shrieked.
She backhanded me, the heavy diamond ring on her finger catching my lip. I tasted blood.
But I didn’t let go.
I grabbed her wrist and twisted it backward until she dropped the car keys into a puddle.
Julian was there a second later.
He hauled Beatrice off the ground, pinning her arms behind her back.
She kicked and thrashed like a wild animal.
“Let me go! You can’t do this to me!”
“It’s already done,” Julian breathed heavily, the rain plastering his hair to his forehead.
Sirens wailed in the distance.
Julian had called the police before he even came down the stairs. He had known something was wrong. The confrontation in the foyer had just been the final piece of the puzzle.
Two police cruisers tore up the driveway, their red and blue lights flashing through the rain.
Officers jumped out, pulling Beatrice from Julian’s grasp.
As they handcuffed her, she didn’t cry. She didn’t beg.
She looked at Julian with pure, unadulterated hatred.
“You think you’re so smart, Julian,” she spat as they pushed her toward the cruiser. “But you don’t even know the best part.”
Julian wiped the rain from his face. “What are you talking about?”
Beatrice smiled a wicked, bloody smile.
“Ask your precious mother why she’s in that wheelchair. Ask her what happened the night she fell down the stairs two years ago.”
Julian froze.
The officers shoved Beatrice into the back of the car and slammed the door.

Julian turned around slowly, looking back at the open doors of the mansion.
Margaret was sitting inside the foyer, watching us.
